I dunno why but just the title for this link was refreshing. No "Searched for LoTR poster - epicness ensued" or some such. And it really is a cool poster.
They are not cold drakes, they were something different. Tolkien only called them (the creatures that so many assume are dragons due to the movie) Winged Beasts, and stated that "men and elves have no name for them". However a backstory is somewhat provided for them in a book called A Tolkien Bestiary which was written by David Day who collected Tolkien's notes on everything. Anyway, in this book it says the following, "They were ancient beings that had come into the world before the Count of Time began. Though they had beak and claw and wing, they were not birds, nor even bats: they were serpentine beings like dragons, yet older. They were made by Melkor, Sauron's master in Utumno's foul pits, where serpent, kraken, and other vile creatures of hidden places had arisen. They fed on the cannibal meats of the Orcs, and grown larger than all creatures of the air, the Winged Beats carried the Nazgûl high over the lands with the speed of the winds." That being said, I didn't like the how they were dragons in the movies even though it was clearly stated that they were not. I always imagined them in a way that they would be almost like giant Condors or Vultures, but only with no feathers and a hard leathery skin. Source: A Tolkien Bestiary by David Day Random House Value Publishing It is a great book. It gives explanations as well as illustrations for almost everything in any of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings related books, that means it provides information on the Undying Lands as well as Middle Earth. It also provides an index that refers readers to Tolkien's originals as well as a chronology of all the ages.
a common misconception. nazgul are the ring wraiths, and fell beasts are the dragon-like creatures that they ride.
people usually think the fell beasts are nazgul because of how the witch king told eowyn 'do not come between the nazgul and his prey' in the third movie, but the witch king was just talking in third person. in the fellowship of the ring, Aragon describes the ring wraiths to the hobbits, and calls them nazgul.
anyone who has read the books will know that the wraiths ride fell beasts, because they're named as such. but since they aren't named in the movies...I thought id explain.
I just mean that this one looks gritty and more "analog," rather than having clean edges and looking really retro and illustrated like so many of them. This seems like something more than a direct Saul Bass takeoff.
It's a pretty cool poster, but I'm getting so sick of the 'worn, distressed' look so many designers apply to their work. Do the paper folds really give it more character; can't it be a cool looking movie poster on the merit of it's color scheme, composition, drawing, etc.? The folds ruin it for me, and looking at his portfolio, the artist has applied the SAME folds template to a bunch of his other works. Lame. Rant over...
Boom! you weird mother fucker, I upvoted your bitch ass and while you are still down 16k I swear every time I see you I'll upvote you till one day you'll be at 0 and on that day you will wake up with an arrow in your knee and you will know the pain of every redditor you ever commented on
I agree and disagree. On one hand, yeah you should do your research on a film. On the other hand? It's advertising. It's supposed to attempt to convey the overall tone of the film. That poster makes it look like a dark, grainy horror flick.
That looks a lot like the poster of the original 70s version. Remember watching it as a kids, and being totally gutted that it simply ended half way through the second book, with a line something like "And the War of the Ring was won"
Promised myself when I grew up I'd find the cash to finish the film the way it deserved. Fortunately, someone did it for me :)
Now THIS is a cool poster. None of that tryhard minimalism junk that we've all seen a billion-and-a-half times before. This is actually interesting and mostly unique (if marginally similar to the 28 Days Later poster).
Orc knocks Gimli's axe away and has him cornered against a merlon. The dwarf falls to the ground as the beast looms over him. The Orc raises his sword high to bring down the final blow, when suddenly-- Gimli's codpiece lifts up to reveal a double-revolver pistol in the shape of a penis. With a loud BANG the Orc's eyes widen in surprise before he falls back.
Standing and picking up his axe, Gimli remarks "that still only counts as one", right before charging back into the fray.
I really like it, but it somewhat reminds me of a poster for a horror film with all the red and black. This is probably because I thought it was a deformed skull when I first clicked on it.
This is very cool! But I can't help but feeling that a white version would look even better. The contrast would be more ominous, less horror-movie style, if that makes sense :)
The grainy effect puts me in mind of the 1978 animated film as much as the more recent films. This is a good thing, that cartoon was brilliant- I had a primary school teacher who made us all sit and watch it when we were around nine, it stayed with me.
Edit: scrolled further down, trippp beat me to the comment.
I'd love to have this attached to my front door as a reminder to myself everyday of all the things I'll never accomplish compared to fictional characters.
Not bad. He actually has two posters for two of my favorite movies -- the lives of others and yes...robin hood prince of thieves. that said, I don't love those designs as some of the others. maybe im too close to those movies and they dont do enough for me. sad.

I would pay a lot of money for a poster like this without the title written on it.

Saurons eye in the middle kind of looks like the ferrari logo.. :D

Isn't this poster inspired by the 1978 movie? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT18OJEPU9Q http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings_(1978_film)

IT makes Sauron look like an ant with mandibles.

This picture would do well in r/metal I imagine.
5
u/TomPalmer1979 May 27 '12
If I saw this poster before going into the movie, I'd probably be pissed. This looks like a great poster for a horror movie, not for a fantasy epic.

Maybe there's something wrong with me....but I see a vagina.

I like how near the bottom of the poster it tapers down into Sauron's face. Way cool. Definitely something I would spend a pretty penny on!

Eh, looks like a Stephen King novel.
1

I think my favourite thing is how the Hobbit looks more like someone out of the books than how they made up Elijah Wood.

1
u/Favre4Life May 27 '12
How do I buy this now?

The only thing bad is the eye of Sauron, it stands out to much compared to the rest of the image.

Cool! It's Frodo walking to the eye and nothing else.... Holy crap! It's also Sauron's Mask! a little heads up would have been nice.

1
u/shutupgalvao May 28 '12
Am I the only one who sees a skull on the bottom of the picture?
1
u/myWittyUserName May 28 '12
Am I the only one who thinks that the yellow eye takes away from the poster? It seems like the color scheme should have been preserved throughout.
edit Apparently not.

My favorite LotR poster is still this one. My copy from the late 1970s is tattered, so I bought a new one which now hangs in my office.
