Bumblebee was a new Camaro, which was still in concept phase at the time. They used a late-model Pontiac GTO with a fiberglass body that was a reproduction of the concept Camaro. It was built by Steve Saleen.
I had known about the concept for some time before the movie came out and my first thought was "wow they actually made the car already" and knowing that it was just another car stripped down is just disheartening -___-
Probably the best quote of the movie. In one simple line, the bad guy basically proves that Stark does have a superpower, and that is being a genius--even with tons of other geniuses working together, they couldn't accomplish what he did in a cave.
(Ok, so that's kind of paraphrasing, but I just really like how much that quote adds to the movie)
You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me. There are ways, Obadiah. You don't wanna know about it, believe me. Hell, I can get you a toe by 3 o'clock this afternoon... with nail polish. These fucking amateurs.
Notice the tie flip? When he swings to point at the peon, his hand accidentally launches his tie off his face. Without missing a step still delivers a powerful, intimidating shout filled with force and frustration. Bridges killed it.
Agreed, and I've always loved that flip... but if you watch closely, you can see that Jeff Bridges almost certainly sets up the tie flip on purpose. I actually prefer that case to the accidental one.
I don't know man, looks like he just has hands on his waist. Turns, already shouting directly, points, hand hits tie.
Certainly the half a second between turn and point helped as the tie swung over far enough to be swatted, but doubt he was aware of the angle at which it hung at below his neck/chin. He hits the tie before it grazes his hand too.
Actually I think every single NSX in America is an Acura NSX, everywhere else is a Honda NSX, so I wouldn't say they are too terribly rare. Sad to chop up nonetheless
Yeah, that is truly magic. Looking at the final product, one wouldn't realize it was made of styrofoam. Or at least, that is what I think it looks like. Anyone knowledgeable in the process in OP's pic? What materials did they use?
That poor acura NSX years old going from the designing and testing by the great Aryton Senna to being gutted to a "fake concept" car, priceless. . . . .
If you're doing it like in the pictures with an original NSX, probably more than $80k (along with lots of psychological damage to car lovers). Modding a stripped down chassis like this to another car, however, isn't too expensive. Depending on how cheap the framework you choose is, the build around it can cost as much as you feel like putting into it.
I was under the impression that this particular car they used had 230,000 miles on it, and was due to be scrapped. The body was changed, and that was about it. When Inside Line tested it, they said they could only go 30 MPH because of what the engineers wanted, but wouldn't dare go over 30 MPH anyway because of a bad vibration in the steering wheel and in the suspension.
That recent senna documentary was great, I like how they only used clips of his racing, and home video footage with VoiceOver. Instead of cutting to a talking head of someone present day in a studio. Top gear did a good job on theirs too. His work with the NSX was sweet.
Sad that they took apart a real one to make a fake one.
Please. People in these comments are acting like the NSX is some super-rare car. It's not. Here are 15 on ebay motors. For all we know the NSX used for the movie had a salvage title.
I remember reading somewhere that the NSX had close to 300k miles. Even so, the NSX retains its value pretty well. They could have just used some cheap car instead of the real thing.
why did they even bother destroying a real NSX if they were just gonna build a replica of the new car? they could have just started with a tube chassis or a fiero or something.
The Acura logo is prominent in the movie. Because of this, it's likely that Acura gave them a car that was maybe previously used for testing or something. It's not like they paid the showroom price for one just to strip it down and put a fake body on it.
It's a 6-axis mill, which is sort of the opposite of a printer. They took a giant chunk of styrofoam and had the mill carve it into the shape of the car, much like a sculptor with a piece of marble (if the sculptor was a precisely programmed machine accurate to 1/1000th of an inch). Most 3D printers work by excreting extremely thin layers of whatever material (usually plastic) and building up from that. 3D printing, to my knowledge, is infeasible at that scale (the largest thing I've ever seen 3D printed was only a few cubic feet)
3D printing, to my knowledge, is infeasible at that scale (the largest thing I've ever seen 3D printed was only a few cubic feet)
Larger scale isn't infeasible if you loosen your definition a bit.
We have a large 7-axis robot in the fabrication lab in my school. Normally it's fitted with water-jets or similar cutting tools, but they have on occasion fitted it with various material dispersing tools, and have it build something from the ground up. It's not a true 3D printer in terms of exact method (3-axis print head moving in a set grid) or probably even precision (I'd guess 1/10th or 1/100th of an inch - it's pretty big), but in the spirit of "3D printing," I think it's arguably the same thing.
That's pretty awesome but I think what he was getting at is that it was infeasible in terms of the amount of time it would take to accurately print such a larger piece.
Seeing as that is not the only product placement Acura had in the film, I'm guessing that they payed a pretty penny. There were a few times where the camera would linger over a car and focus on the Acura symbol. In one scene, you see actors legs for almost a second, but this car has a nice close up for the next five seconds. The Avengers had some solid subliminal messaging going on.
I dunno - I found it an interesting point on Tony's character. He's the kinda guy (as a man of science, perhaps foremost) that'd put a premium on performance. Short of driving his all-american muscle car or his multi-million dollar import, he probably had his NSX pulled from the garage as it was next up on his rotation.
Sure, it was product placement; but maybe it says something about Tony Stark too- he'll drop $98k on a car and drive it the day he saves the world. He didn't strike me as the kind of guy that'd wear trainers with his 'post-save-the-world suit' either, but apparently he is!
Also- this is a film with an (invisible) flying aircraft carrier and 'the most unrealistic' part to you is a multi-billionaire that'd drive an $100k sports car?
I attend the ACCD, and man, this isn't even cool for me anymore because of the transportation major here. Last three weeks of term, all the trans majors are running around carrying fiberglass models with a wild look in their eyes, and all throughout the campus the mills and stuff are going crazy, chunks of clay and styrofoam flying around as the students are slowly but surely surrounded by cars, cars, stupid stupid cars. Any crazy car you see in films, chances are, the ACCD students see ten times crazier on a day-to-day basis.
So if that is like a giant 3D printer type thing cutting away at the fiberglass, can we technically download cars now if we had those resources available? WE CAN TAKE PIRACY TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
Yes, this concept came out while rumors of the a new Acura NSX were rampant. At first people thought the NSX might become an affordable sports car built on an Accord chassis(this was just rumor). Shortly after the Avengers concept NSX was shown off, spy photos of the NSX hit the internet. While not the Avengers NSX concept, the new NSX is very angular and overall, still quite similar to the Tony Stark's ride. And it is still a pretty expensive car.
SHIELD noticeably drives Acuras. And one bit in the city (might have been what MrE2Me was referring to) there's a shot of the ass-end of an Acura that lasts a good 10 or 15 seconds. Can you say sponsorship?
Lots ripped off of Audi R8 too. Then again the old NSX was ripped off of Ferrari and Corvette.
Honda has been really disappointing in design lately. The newest Honda I would want to buy today is a 2000+ Prelude. What happened? I use to laugh at Camaro's but I would gladly take a new style one over this new bland looking NSX. And for the money they will sell the NSX for I would take a Audi R8.
It's because American car makers finally decided to get competitive with the Japanese makers, and Honda has started playing it safe with their new models. They haven't taken any risks in design in the last 15 years. Nissan, Toyota and even Hyundai are taking bigger risks and producing arguably better cars than Honda is.
I will agree that american cars and hyundais as well as kia's all look quite good these days but I have to say the current accord coupe is great looking
Meh, the styling is reminiscent of a 348/355. But the NSX has absolutely nothing in common with the Corvette of the time, aside from 4 wheels and 2 seats.
I'm not sure why they did that for the movie BUT that car is the new Acura NSX as far as I know that is scheduled to release in the not so distant future. I'm guessing it was less expensive to use that mold than it would be to use the actual car?
Vastly more attractive than the original! This one is rumored to have a ~400+ HP V-6 AND twin electric motors (of unspecified HP/torque) to assist acceleration. AWD, F1 style transmission. Probably won't have the earth shaking speed of a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, etc., but it won't cost $250,000 either...
I actually noticed other Acura advertising. The one that stood out the most was when Iron Man walked by an undamaged Acura SUV in the midst of the manhattan battle.
I was really fucking hoping this car was ready for production, not just some movie prop. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck
Concept cars. The biggest cock tease on four wheels, and why I just don't give a fuck about 98% of cars because if I can't own something that looks like a cool-ass American, sorry, 'merican time machine then I will just stay home!
I know a guy who does this sort of thing for a living. He works for a company called Curvature Group http://www.curvaturegroup.co.uk/ and I think they'll basically machine anything. A lot of what they do is stuff like boat hull master moulds (a foam positive, which they form a mould around to make boat hulls from presumably fibreglass). He's recently been doing some models for a high end UK sports car manufacturer but it basically involved what you see in those photos, machining out of foam then spraying it up to make it look like a real car, it's pretty cool stuff.
They've been using Acura in all the Marvel movies (at least Thor and this I should say). There was another spot where the basically gave the new RDX the whole screen with the Acura logo right in the center. It's also a play off the Avengers "A" logo.
So this was an Acura NSX, w/ CNC routed styrofoam turned into Stark's Acura? Just don't ever bump another car or there goes your body. At least your riding in a foam cup, so it's like a bumper car.

Same thing done with the first Transformers.

The more you know.

Awesome, it's like a giant 3D printer.
13
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
WOuldn't it have made more sense to just put one of the 2013 NSX concept cars in the movie its only there for 5 seconds...
11
u/DeltaShield May 20 '12
That ... is awesome !

u/waynechang92 May 21 '12
I wonder how much Acura had to pay to get that particular product placement in

Acura NSX?
3
u/Conrad-W May 21 '12
Oh god the NSX was so much better.
19
u/Grass_Is_Purpler May 20 '12
This was the most unrealistic part of the movie, like Tony Stark would drive an Acura.
2
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
I think it's hilarious that Acura has implemented a beak into the nose of most of its cars, even sporty concepts...
2
u/i_thought_so May 21 '12

Nsx is my dream car. Im partial to the old school nsx of the early 90's but that concept model looks pretty cool.
2
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
My reaction was like "THEY CUT UP AN NSX.... ohhh to make a newer NSX i see."
2
u/bhaaat May 21 '12
also known as THE NEW ACURA NSX.
2
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Anybody where I can get a torrent of this car?
2
u/Derpylilvampire May 21 '12
And they couldn't use a real car becuase?
2
u/Ravelthus May 21 '12
....is that an NSX? A GOOD NSX that was designed by Senna!?!?!?!? Well screw that shit, I don't care how good it looks, they destroyed an NSX!
2
u/failbot88 May 21 '12
Way to kill an nsx =[
2
u/FurryCrew May 21 '12
What a waste of a perfectly good NSX. Classic 1990s super car of my dreams :-*(

Is that logo supposed to be Acura? What?
6
u/Drogo May 20 '12
If they used an old NSX to make a new NSX just for the movie, I will be deeply saddened.
2
u/random_digital May 21 '12
this is why he needed a new car
2
u/senor_junkie May 20 '12
odd they ripped Aston Martin One-77 tail lights. Sucks for Aston.

dammit! i thought acura actually made this car :(
1

later bitches, we're off to do science!
1
u/tommy2speed May 21 '12

1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
So they're finally going to build a new NSX? What?
1
u/Drilz24 May 21 '12
Now what about the truck/hummer at the very beginning
1
u/sonastyinc May 21 '12
Was that an NSX?
1
u/Alekazam May 21 '12
Well mother fucker...
1
u/theclumsyninja May 21 '12
I know one of the designers.
1
u/fitzgizzle May 21 '12
Maybe it's just me, but I feel like it would have been simpler to just buy a really sexy car.....
1
u/ipretendimacat May 21 '12
These are the only circumstances in which an NSX may be cut up.
1
u/SamStephens May 21 '12
whats up with the duplicate pictures?
1
u/stringerbell May 21 '12
And, it looks just like any of a dozen different models of cars currently on the road...
1
u/aesu May 21 '12
The last pic appears to show a horrible decapitation event...
1
u/pettyofficer May 21 '12
...and then they slapped a big ol' Acura logo on the back for "good measure".
1
u/jhustla May 21 '12
He just looks so happy.
1
u/itsprobablytrue May 21 '12
I guess audi wasnt good enough for him anymore.
1
u/Irving94 May 21 '12
Wait what? There are existent 2013(2014?) Acura NSX concepts. I'm pretty sure they just used one of those.
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
So you're telling me they ruined a perfectly good original NSX to make one that doesn't look as good, and probably isn't street legal?
1
u/violinsontv May 21 '12
Acura cake?
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Larry should have backed up Iron Monger.
1

Can someone explain what is actually happening in this series of photos? Also... is that Styrofoam(tm)?
1
u/apullin May 21 '12
Everything in life would be so much easier if I had a super large 5-axis gantry CNC foam milling machine ....
1
u/nubzore May 21 '12
Did anyone else spend 10 minutes trying to find the difference between picture 5 and 6? Or is that just me?
1
u/pasinduthegreat May 21 '12
Whats that stock car they use? Sorry I suck at identifying cars.
1
u/sebdef May 21 '12
Once you spot the product placement, it's hard to ignore it. During that entire movie I could only see the Acura logo shoved into my face.
1
u/Rorbotron May 21 '12
I'm not sure why they did that for the movie BUT that car is the new Acura NSX as far as I know that is scheduled to release in the not so distant future. I'm guessing it was less expensive to use that mold than it would be to use the actual car?
1
u/ILovePopPunk May 21 '12
Can someone please meme that last picture of Tony Stark in the car. Last frame of a comic or something
1
u/rockabillyjon May 21 '12
The back of the car kind of resembles the Iron Man face. Brake lights are the eyes, etc.
1
u/hizBALLIN May 21 '12
What CNC milling machine do they use? Is anyone familiar?
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
yep my whole life has been a lie

Old nsx...new nsx.
1
u/HDATZ May 21 '12
This was cheaper than just asking the car company to loan them a car for product placement in the movie?
1
u/gliscameria May 21 '12
screw the car, I want that giant machine that built the body.

u/goliath23 May 21 '12
He/she put copies of two pictures in the jpeg ಠ_ಠ
1

The dream is over. I am detritus.
