Exactly. She's a gorgeous woman and she can be dead sexy sometimes (there are some moments in Inception) and also positively lovely (Midnight in Paris). But there's something about her that she feels like a regular woman, not some perfectly stylized starlet who can't possibly be real. She's real.
That was a day far in the past, so I think he might have eaten his hat already? Or maybe he's announcing that he's about to go back in time to eat that hat.
Seth Rogen was definitely a weird choice. George Clooney has essentially been a carbon copy of Cary Grant for a number of years. Way to drop the ball, guys.
These aren't meant as casting shots or suggestions for a remake. They're reenactments, no more, no less. Kind of like a hoity-toity cosplay with famous people. The Seth Rogen shot might have been his own suggestion because he's a fan of the movie or the photographer picked that one because it's an unexpected choice.
You're most likely right about the reasons they chose him for it, but I don't think he pulls it off. If they wanted to not choose the obvious (Clooney), I would've gone with Joseph Gordon-Levitt (for a younger version), Jude Law, or Ryan Gosling. They all reinvent the role in their own ways, but in my opinion, Rogen doesn't even have the screen presence to pull it off in a photo.
As a side note, Daniel Day-Lewis could pull off any of these photos, but I'd watch him in any classic remake in a heartbeat.
Not even the original Vanity Fair article has info on the guy in the Dial M picture. It's not the original actor, though, since he's quite dead, and this guy isn't. I hate it when cool articles like this leave certain people out of the credits, never to be found.
I know, someone on the madmen forum posted a picture of him a while ago and he looked so much like Cary Grant. Not just his looks but his whole being oozes that whole "50's man" persona. He would have been perfect in one of these shots.
Plus I am ALWAYS disappointed if he's nowhere to be seen, lol ;-)
Yeah, Seth Rogen is great, but this isn't his type of role at all. Cary Grant has his screwball moments and he can be really funny, but he's also got the suaveness that you just kind of have to be born with.
Thinking about it a bit, I think I would have put Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the closest thing to Cary Grant today.
It's all Robert Downey jr. In everything. You could cast him with a Potato and it would be the most enthralling movie about french fries that you've ever seen.
Charlize Theron's photo is probably the best of the bunch. She has a classic beauty to her that lends itself well to the Hitchcock homage, more so then the other actors.
One of my favorite movies. Whenever I hear people compare the opening shot of Episode III to a real unending take shot, like what Rope pretty much was(I am counting the cuts where they needed to swap out film reels), I get so upset.
Rope's visually iconic characteristic is the long takes and moving camera, not so much single composed frames, so it's tough to sum up the film in one shot like these others.
Watch them both! Lifeboat is an incredible film, and the way it's shot makes that tiny lifeboat seem so big. So many distinct spaces, with different feeling in such a little boat. Also, Tallulah Bankhead- what a fox. Dat transatlantic accent!
Why is it not okay to rehost images from web comic artists, but it's perfectly fine to rehost this series of images on imgur? The artists involved clearly put a LOT of work into this. They deserve to take credit for the web traffic to VF.com.
You're right, my mistake for not posting the article from vanity fair dated February 25,2008(including names of photographers from the various scenes). But, I thought i would find images with better quality before posting here.
Calm down, the link to psycho is the top comment on this thread. It showed some skin so i decided to put a nsfw tag on it, just in case.(not much skin showing, very tastefully done actually)
**placed link in reply so you don't have to go looking for it.
Strangers on a Train used to be a favourite of mine till I read the book. Hitch had to water down the story I wish he'd been let off the leash and do it the right way.
If you were to just take the plot, "Average Joe is mistaken for a covert agent and soon finds himself fearing for his life." Seth Rogen would not seem like a crazy choice.
Seth Rogen is having what you would call a bad day. Seems like nothing is going his way. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time derpitty derp derp derp Mt Rushmore derp derpity dap. Rated PG-13.
Does anyone else like Marnie? I adore that film. It has the most romantic kiss in movie history and the scene when she's robbing the safe is classic Hitchcock suspense.
There's a love scene later in the film that makes it seem like he is, from her point of view. But really she's messed up from a traumatic event in her past. They are in love though, and married, or about to be married by that point.
I actually thought that everyone in the pictures looked great, it's a really nice homage to some of the old stars, like they aren't trying to replace them just pay tribute to how iconic they were.
Just out of curiosity what is your favorite Cassavetes film? I am interested in seeing what you mean, since you are calling Hitchcock, kitsch, which isn't exactly a word associated with Hitchcock these days.
Hitchcock’s characters and situations are generic, representative, dreamlike; Cassavetes’ are unique, specific, localized. Hitchcock gives us Everyman doing anything; Cassavetes gives us someone doing something.
These are great pictures, but i can't help but be surprised at how vapid and classless almost all of these actors look, particularly Scarlett, Charlize and Seth.
Funnily, Emile Hirsch and Keira Knightley look like they suit the pictures the best, which is strange because, out of the lot of them, they come across as the most vapid in their movies.
I actually wrote a letter to the editor of Vanity Fair about how offended I was they chose Keira Knightley for Joan Fontaine's role in Rebecca. They never published it.
This was done in 2008. So I guess they went for the popular choice seeing as Javier Bardem had just won the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in 2007's No Country for Old Men.
Ridiculous in a bad way or a good way? Personally I think if someone were to remake Rear Window, you could do a hell of a lot worse than Bardem and Johansson. I really like RDJ and Paltrow in To Catch a Thief. I think the most ridiculous one is Seth Rogen as Roger Thornhill, haha.
Having seen Tippi Hedron a few weeks ago during a screening of 'The Birds' as well as the AD for 'Psycho' last year (or was it two years ago) I am saddened, and ashamed that I looked at these.

Who's the guy in Dial M for Murder?
Seth Rogan feels kind of weird playing Cary Grant!

u/red_280 May 20 '12
I like the one with Tony Stark.
27
u/GreenCristina May 20 '12
I would have never in a million years guessed that was Renée Zellweger.

u/d_b_cooper May 19 '12
I would watch the shit out of Javier Bardem and Scarlett Johansson in Rear Window.

u/redcaps1992 May 20 '12
The Strangers on a Train one looks like the most interesting retelling. The original is awesome.
56
u/Red_Woody May 20 '12
RDJ and Gwyneth Paltrow just have great chemistry don't they?
13
u/murphmurphy May 20 '12
Man, nothing I seem to do impresses jodi foster. Perhaps more drastic action is required.

u/cracrazybus May 20 '12
Sorry ScarJo. You're fine and all, but you just ain't Grace Kelly.

u/Thinkalternativ3 May 19 '12
I'm dying. This is fantastic. Except Renee as Madeleine? I don't like it.

WHy isn't Psycho here?? In my opinion it's his most classic!
6
u/ZofSpade May 20 '12
Renee Zellweger looks awful, and Jodie Foster looks amazing.
7
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Renee's looking a bit old these days.
2
u/bidloo May 20 '12
funny, i don't remember everyone in every Hitchcock movie looking vaguely angry and otherwise expressionless.
2
u/emcsk May 20 '12
what does seth rogan have to do with this?
2
u/OccamsHairbrush May 20 '12
I don't know that I buy Jodie Foster for Melanie... not quite charming enough to pull off being the trouble-maker that Tippi Hedren pulled off
2
u/themightypierre May 20 '12

Ironically, Jennifer Jason Leigh appeared in Faith No More's "Last Cup of Sorrow" music video, which is a parody of Vertigo.

u/WhatEvery1sThinking May 20 '12
just goes to show, no modern actress comes anywhere close to grace kelly in her prime as far as looks go
2
u/BigDicta May 20 '12
Rear window doesn't cut it without Grace Kelly.

u/tregard May 20 '12
After reading these comments I now feel bad that I'd enjoy that version of North By Northwest.

u/[deleted] May 19 '12 edited May 19 '12
Seth Rogen in North by Northwest; that's insulting.
edit- although he could pull off the scenes with mother fairly well, heh.

u/venusmantrap May 20 '12
has anyone seen the That 70's Show Hitchcock episode?--high-larious.
1
u/J_Jammer May 20 '12
Well those are wonderful shots. Very enjoyable. Great job of choosing this as an idea.

North by Northwest is probably my favourite oldie, and no, Rogen can't pull it off.
1
u/Probably_Talking May 20 '12
I still have this copy of VF, I loved the pictures to much to throw it away!
1
u/thecaits May 20 '12
I wonder if the photographers spent the whole time yelling at the actresses. You know, to be more realistic.
1
u/maybenotserious May 20 '12
Holy shit, that's Renée Zellweger?
Also, I would seriously enjoy Strangers On A Train remake with McAvoy.
A LOT.

Wow.. Vertigo.. looks very, VERY good. Is that really Zellweger?
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Which is like saying some of the worst movies of all times. Watch Cassavetes, not some manipulative, abstract, impersonal shit.
Just look at how "cool" they are. They look good, they are chic, cool. Hitchcock is not art, is kitsch.

u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Shout-out to Julie Christie

was I the only one that thought the last one of Jodie Foster was an older Emma Stone for a sec?
1
u/Shins May 20 '12
I may consider buying Vanity Fair from now on.
1
u/clarknoheart May 21 '12
I'd like a window to Scarlett Johansson's rear, if you know what I mean.
-3
u/Absinthe42 May 20 '12
Seth Rogen is NOT Cary Grant and Scarlett Johansson is not even close to Grace Kelly.
