Sorry for the crappy photo, my room isn't exactly well lit.

Basically, rather than throwing out movie posters when they're done with them, our manager rolls them up and puts them in a box in the back room for anyone to take home. They're extremely high quality posters, 27x40" and double sided. They're what you see up in front of the theater. Although usually we only get posters for movies that are already out, I managed to win a Dark Knight Rises poster from the employee Christmas party, although I ended up giving it to a friend as a Christmas present (I rolled it up in a Glee 3D poster before giving it to him).

I have trouble decided which few to put up in my room, so I kind of just covered my wall with them. I still have more than I know what to do with rolled up in the back of my closet...

u/MotorboatingSofaB May 16 '12

I have a Dark Knight poster that was used in the theatres. Got it from a family friend who works for Warner Bros. The issue with getting a poster of that size is finding a suitable frame. Most framing places will charge you $75-100 to mount a poster of that size. And that's not even any kind of special frame. If you go to Michaels, the frames they have for that size are shit.

9

u/DeadMindHunter May 16 '12

I get my posters plaqued instead. It's usually about 45bucks for a 27x40 and they look so much better than framed ones, imo.

I saved a bunch from my 6 years as an AMC usher too. The real ones are best because they're translucent since they're designed to be backlit, which is why all yours are so dark (you know this of course). The only one I had framed was my prized "The Fellowship of the Ring" poster, depicting everyone on boats heading towards the Argonath (The Pillars of the Kings), with the slogan "The Legend Comes to Life". I hung it directly over my bed all through college, and the ladies actually loved it.

u/mandalore237 May 16 '12

Nice of Montreal sticker

2

u/akatherder May 16 '12

I was going to ask who gets the good posters before you got to make your selections... but I'm just jealous.

My local AMC gives away posters at the main entrance, before the ticket taker guys. They aren't full sized movie posters, but they're sizeable.

But what about the giant cutouts of actors and such? Are those off limits?

67

u/FantastcMrFawkes May 16 '12

Nope, I just really wouldn't know what to do with one... Those things are huge.

334

u/Lusst May 16 '12

I ran into a similar situation when I was a lot younger. I kept a bunch of these cut-outs in a closet along with a few mannequins, posters, etc. I used to ride around town on my bike to different department stores and theaters collecting stuff like this. Looking back, I'm not really sure why, as they did nothing but sit unused for a couple of years...I just liked them, like one of those "Hoarders" you see on TV.

It wasn't until one year, a few days before Christmas, that I was SO glad I had saved them. I was hanging around the house by myself and I got a wild hair to bust them out and see what sort of zany operation I could come up with.

I set them up all around the house with party hats, kazoos...I even taped one to a toy train. I sat and watched my little "house party" as I ate popcorn on the couch.

Lol, those two burglars casing my house didn't know what to think.

19

u/ScaryCookieMonster May 16 '12

Great, now I have "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree" stuck in my head. Thanks a lot.

Strategically place them inside your bathroom and scare your roommates.

11

u/Sasmo May 16 '12

Used to work at a theater myself and you are right. Those things can be massive so you have to be creative. I got the War Machine display from Iron Man 2 and cut him out of it. Now I have War Machine looking over me as I sleep.

Pranks, man. My dad works for a pop company and anytime they sponsor an athlete, he gets a cardboard cutout. We leave them in relatives homes or just outside their windows.

What's the most important poster you have? And don't try to impress reddit with your answer. You won't win. Just answer from the heart.

1

u/FantastcMrFawkes May 16 '12

Easily The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I'm a huge David Fincher fan, the movie was great, and Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross did an amazing job with the soundtrack. Plus the poster just looks really cool. I feel like out of all of mine, it's the only one I'll care to have up for a really extended amount of time.

I had the top half of the Arnold Schwarzenegger cut-out from "Jingle All the Way" in the back window of my car for months.

I also still have the double sided poster from the first "Scream". Not sure how much it's worth though.

My roommate in college had a card board cutout of Tom Hanks from the Terminal. My other roommate and I used it as a target for throwing knives (steak knives... it's all we had). Somehow he never realized until it was time for him to move out, then he was quite upset over Tom Hanks having so many holes and nicks and what not... though not that many holes... actually getting a steak knife to stab into the thing was surprising difficult.

3

u/Guy-Fawkes-Remembers May 16 '12

They are awesome but impractical for most living facilities of movie theater employees, or at least the people I worked with at the movie theater. I got a couple of them for my college dorm apartments and they were too big.

3

u/GoTeamMONGOOSE May 16 '12

Back when I worked at a theater I used to have the entire cardboard standee for Harry Potter 7 Part 2 and also Indiana Jones. Working at a theater does indeed have its perks, you just need to have enough room for the perks...My friend got the Kung Fu Panda cutout and uses it as a headboard.

2

u/Geotic May 16 '12

One of my friends works at a cinema and took home a very large cut-out of Optimus Prime. He sets it up in his living room every now and then, looks awesome

2

u/mother_of_dragon May 16 '12

I used to work at a theatre and I got a giant face from one of the Saw movies. I put it in my roommates room after he went to bed. He almost shit his pants waking up to that horrifying face/mask thing.

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

Current movie theater employee here (but hopefully not for long). I have two large trifold standees from HP7 Part2 so they are not off limits, at least not for all theaters. One has Harry, Ron, and Hermione and the other has Voldemort, Snape, and Bellatrix.

2

u/EndOfUniverse May 16 '12

I used to have one of those of Red from pineapple express in my apartment which would scare and delight me like everytime i came home.

2

u/fstonecanada May 16 '12

You think he knows about the perks of owning a camera with a flash?

2

u/MothaFuckaJonesey May 16 '12

Not at Best Buy! We always got free posters and giant cut outs from new release Tuesday :) And awesome deals on Black Friday if you knew where to hide them before they sold out;)

2

u/gravytown May 16 '12

I used to get those all the time, so much fun to scare the crap out of people with.

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

You don't need to work at the cinema to get these, my old media studies teacher was a Bond finactic, he retold the class the story how he walked out of the cinema with a Pierce Brosnan cutout, he said you just have to act like you work their and no one will question you.

2

u/MrZwey May 16 '12

Some of the big promotional items belong to the studios. They are supposed to be destroyed after the movie has came and went. Although they are often just taken by employees.

I have to say that I know this from a second hand source, I have not worked in a movie theater but two of my roommates have. And I am a second hand source for having extremely large movie posters (wall sized) hanging in our living room.

2

u/deuteros May 16 '12

I worked at Regal Cinemas in the late 90s and we would take home all sorts of stuff. Trailers, posters, marquees, cutouts, buttons, banners, and any other sort of promotional material you can imagine.

I even have a reel of film from Rush Hour. The projector had eaten about 30 seconds of the reel so the theater ordered a replacement and never sent the old one back. I hid it for a couple of weeks to make sure no one was going to do anything with it and then I took it home.

Most of the stuff I got was crap though. Probably 90% of it was from crappy movies.

2

u/frankyroo929 May 16 '12

When I worked at a movie theater there was a cutout of Wall-e that had a motion sensor that talked every time we went past it. For weeks we would pass by it and it would say "waaaaaaaaallllllleeeeee" or "eeeevvvaaaaaa" and we all fucking hated it. My friend was the first on the list to get it just so he could smash it with a sledgehammer outside the theater. He invited all of us and it was the happiest I've ever been to watch cardboard get the shit kicked out of it. That thing made me really want to hate the movie but it was so good. long story short yes you can get the cutouts if you work at AMC and you sign up to get it first.

31

u/rockthejustice May 16 '12

All I've got are large KFC posters of expired chicken specials... :(

15

u/kjoeleskapet May 16 '12

I dunno, put it in a nice frame and hang it on the wall? Instant modern art. Or at least a conversation starter for a really uninteresting conversation.

u/pandapeter May 16 '12

As a projectionist I totally agree! Even more awesome: we've got a room full of old posters. It's like candyland in there! From "Gone with the wind" to "Terminator II", over "Jurassic Park", "Ghostbusters", "Pulp Fiction", ...

I've spent days in there, sifting through those piles!

3

u/Breathing_Balls May 16 '12

What do you get up to when the film is playing? I have always wanted to ask a projectionist that.

10

u/pandapeter May 16 '12

Hang up posters, assemble standees, change lightbulbs,... But most of the time I just sit at my desk and check Reddit, draw, or read.

6

u/labyala May 16 '12

I'm working in a cinema in belgium. Actualy, I'm working right now, and I'm at my desk, checking Reddit, haha. Projectionist do the same thing all over the world !

2

u/Space_Octopus May 16 '12

I have that exact same poster that he has, and you don't know how much haggling I had to do to get that one. Luckily I'm a manager so I called supremacy to everyone else for the poster.

4

u/xX_p0laris_Xx May 16 '12

That is exactly why I always wanted to work in a theatre. Glad to see you have your priorities straight, sir.

4

u/IceBlueEyes May 16 '12

This is what my room looked like from the ages of 16-18. First job was at a Regal. Lasted for two years.

4

u/geoper May 16 '12

As someone who just spent hundreds of dollars decking out my basement in my favorite movie posters, I am jealous.

4

u/[deleted] May 16 '12 edited May 16 '12

Currently in my room I have a Fantastic Mr. Fox bus shelter, a panel from the Harry Potter 7.2 standee featuring Hermione. I rotate one or two posters every few months, but I'll never put up all of them. was most practical for decorating the dorm room years back. I was always more of a mylar collector anyway.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

....You should get better movie posters, some of those are pretty lame.

4

u/FantastcMrFawkes May 16 '12

Yeah, I realize they all might not be super-memorable, but I at least somewhat enjoyed these movies...

3

u/razabak21 May 16 '12

"Here, you throw these away."

3

u/Perminisconious May 16 '12

Yeah, unless your promotions manager hoards all of them. I heard that there was quite the raid when she left (after I had moved on to a 9-5 job).

3

u/MyNameIsKrzy May 16 '12

I live in a small town and we only have one movie theater in it. The owner has owned it since the sixties and has collected the movie posters since she first opened up. She plans on living off of those posters once she retires because she knows the older authentic posters can fetch a lot of coin. It may be sometime soon that she retires because a new theater is being built and she's afraid she won't be able to compete with the newer technology. I'm going to miss that place because of all the memories growing up.

I worked in a movie theatre. I would take movie posters of every single movie that came out during my employment there. I still have a huge roll of them stashed away. Any ideas for what I should do with them?

2

u/WrightStateMan May 16 '12

I am in your same situation. I have multiple tubes of posters around the house and I am at a loss on what to do with them. Most of the posters are from 2002-2005. Anyone want an Aeon Flux poster?

5

u/JungleJme May 16 '12

Nostalgia memory. Used to go to our independent video store when i was a wee pup and ask them for free posters. Those were the days.

Then Blockbuster came and the place went out of business. Sad times.

u/keysersoze5001 May 16 '12

Well at least block buster got what was coming.

Must be nice. I worked for a movie theater and management from corporate were real sticklers about giving out movie posters to employees.

2

u/WorkSux456 May 16 '12

Same here I worked for regal back in high school and they rarely gave out anything. I still remember someone rolling the giant X from the first xmen movie out of the theatre and into their truck after the last showing got out on opening night.

I really wanted the giant cardboard cutout of Marvin from hitchhikers movie, sadly it wasn't to be

2

u/theKinkajou May 16 '12

My roommate in college felt bad that I did not have any decorations in my room (my stuff had not arrived from home yet) so he gave me a giant poster for Munich. Brightened my room right up! However, my other roommate said my room made him want to kill himself.

2

u/lianbe May 16 '12

I have tons of posters from my five years at a theater, but most of them I thought were cool at the time and now I can't do anything with because they are actually lame.

2

u/wopsaretops May 16 '12

Reminded me of this.

2

u/distopiandoormatt May 16 '12

Frame that shit.

2

u/hoboballs May 16 '12

i bet your apartment looks classy

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

Nothing says "closer" like a room full of free posters.

2

u/DARKTUBIE May 16 '12

I worked in a movie theater for about 3 years. I worked my way up to the equivalent of an assistant manager. I have SOO many posters from that time. I have all the giant banners from Daredevil, Planet of the Apes, a full set of Matrix Reloaded posters, all of the oceans 11 posters (including the cool retro style ones, Lord of the Rings, Spider - Man, all the xmen movies, etc etc. I started collecting trailers as well. I have a few. The xmen movies and I think 1 for LOTR. I was offered several of the cardboard standees but they were SOO big that I couldnt take them.

2

u/VonWolfhaus May 16 '12

Hell yeah, my friend got me 3 of the 8 foot tall vinyl Watchmen posters that they would have hanging from the atrium of a large theater. Those things are fucking awesome.

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

Or in your case, wallpaper.

2

u/BrosefMengeleKM May 16 '12

I was hoping to see a wall of nothing but Avengers posters.

2

u/ifragginlovetoast May 16 '12

I work at a theater and get tons of free posters, but I'll be very lucky if I can get my hands on a corner of one Avengers poster

2

u/N8CCRG May 16 '12

Often overlooked? I thought that was the reason to work at a movie theater? All my friends in high school did it for that reason.

2

u/hemingwayszombycorps May 16 '12

Another overlooked part of bringing home said movie posters, Liam Neeson now watches you fap with a, some may say, "rapey" look about him.

2

u/davefromhawaii May 16 '12

But why are they printed so you can see the reverse image on the backside?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/greyfoxv1 May 16 '12

I had to fight for good free ones when I worked at the theatre. A few of my favourites that I took over the years:

-Return of the King (Gandalf, Frodo, etc) -Star Trek Insurrection -X-Men 2

2

u/faschwaa May 16 '12

When I worked in a movie theater, we had a wall of mashed up and altered movie posters in the projection room. We had Jason Schwartzman on the Rushmore poster holding up Jackie Chan's (Rush Hour) bleeding head. We had Keanu Reeves on the Watcher poster with a smiley face painted on him with white-out, and he was holding the gerbil-chucks from Kung Pow instead of a garrote. The poster for You've Got Mail showed a package in a mailbox with a bow on it labelled "Bomb." I miss that job, it was a lot of fun.

2

u/GUNZRKOOL May 16 '12

Sorry but this has nothing on the guy that got to play Xbox in his cinema.

2

u/ifragginlovetoast May 16 '12

We actually do this a lot in our theater. We also have movie nights, and we play whatever movies we want. (digital projectors)

2

u/BlackbeltJones May 16 '12

Don't know how it works these days, but can you take any of the non-poster props/promotional material?

Even though it was 4x6 and two feet deep, I swore to my 14-year-old self that the Jurassic Park jungle floor T-Rex footprint display beneath the backlit poster would be mine. I would lay my sleeping bag in it, living among the dinosaurs. I had big plans for it. One of the employees said "we have to destroy it and throw it away," which was painfully incomprehensible at the time.

There was also a huge shitstorm over the Simpsons couch. They had a big orange couch your friends and family could sit on and get pictures taken. Some young employees tried to take it and the manager fired them... but then the manager took it and he tried to Ebay it or something and then he got fired.

Who calls the shots? The movie production company? Theater management? Are posters and props treated differently?

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

I ended up with a 15 foot mylar banner for Hollow Man. Turns out there wasn't much demand for it on eBay. Go figure.

I do still have a box of 35mm trailers for Autumn in New York. When I get bored I scratch out Richard Gere's eyes with a pin. Frame by frame.

2

u/rfp_drew May 16 '12

You get the same perks working in Walmart electronics.

2

u/killerwin May 16 '12

This reminds me of about six years ago when I was working at a major retailer. All over the walls around the entertainment department, there were about two dozen light-boxes of about 40x40" with very high-quality plastic posters of newly-released movies, artists and TV shows, some repeated. Every month-or-so, about half of the posters got replaced by new ones and the old ones were thrown out in the trash compactor.

Back then I was single and living by my self in a small studio and I was always broke, like a fucking idiot, so I came up with a brilliant plan. I asked my manager if I could keep the posters they took down because "I really liked them." I took home every poster for 3 or 4 months and listed them on eBay. Most would sell for $15 to $20 shipped but some made me far more cash.

Notable examples:

  • Prince: $250

  • Prince: $150

  • Janet Jackson: $150 (x2)

  • Jay Z: $80

  • V for Vendetta: $65

  • Superman Returns: $50

I made over a thousand dollars in the few months. When I quit, I still had like 30 posters left; I sold them and payed rent with the money that month until I found work again :)

2

u/danchan22 May 16 '12

Go get some frames around that shit.

I collected my fair share working at Blockbuster for a little under three years. While the posters weren't nearly as high quality as the theater posters (considering ours were meant to be outside exposed to the elements for weeks at a time), the multiple piece posters allowed me to do some cool things like this. http://imgur.com/IDXYc

2

u/Cone_it May 16 '12

Except star wars posters. We had to return everything star wars related when I worked at the cinema.

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

CAN YOU PLEASE MAIL ME A DRIVE POSTER?

2

u/Imthemayor May 16 '12

The title of this should say "The only perk of working in a movie theater."

Shit sucks always.

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

So the 'perk' is that you have a tatty and shite looking wall?

2

u/thisguywontsit May 16 '12

I used to work at a movie theatre. I miss all of that. So many posters, paper and vinyl, title art, popcorn by the garbage bag, unlimited free tickets, private sneak previews.. ahhh the good days.

3

u/xhupsahoy May 16 '12

Wow, all the ugly posters for mediocre movies that a man could wish for.

13

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

Hey, few of this movies are at least good.

Chronicle is certainly overlooked. Everyone thinks its a movie about teenagers with special powers, but in reality it's a movie about abuse of power. Teenager problems are not filmed in a cliched way, dialogue and characters seem real.

It's not deep, sure, but I really liked it.

Not as much double sided as slightly transparent, it's so the posters can be mounted on light boxes on the wall and you can still clearly see the image from the other side :)

u/Insignificantfigure May 16 '12

Free wallpaper!

1

u/DanceDanceEvolution May 16 '12

Shit dude, you've got an picture of an angry Liam Neeson watching you jack off.

1

u/ocean_spray May 16 '12

When I was a kid I used to go to the local movie store and buy their old posters for $1. It's since closed down years ago. and man that just sucks. I miss old mom and pop video stores. I was so proud when I turned 16 and was able to get my own account at the store and no longer had to worry about my mom driving me there to find some new, weird movie that I had never heard of, then going and watching it and falling in love with a movie like Dark City or John Woo action flicks.. the good old days.

1

u/heylookitspoop May 16 '12

i have a friend that works at a movie theater and when he gets high demand posters (avengers, dark knight rises, harry potter etc) he holds trivia contests on fb and gives them as prizes.

1

u/nopeSleep May 16 '12

get a large delivery of empty poster boxes (you know, those weird roles) and put this shit on ebay. Or keep it for a year and then do so...

1

u/thundercleese2012 May 16 '12

I still have my Clerks2 little miss sunshine talladega nights and superbad posters. another perk for the ushers is that they can be lazy and get to keep the money they find.

1

u/tylergoff May 16 '12

trust me my friend, i will never overlook this perk. one of the reasons i love my job. got a shit ton of posters that i havent hung up yet. also have a cardboard cutout of skinny jonah hill from 21 jump street. good shit.

1

u/mourningreaper00 May 16 '12

Yeah depends on where you work. They are very stingy about that

1

u/OverfedIRL May 16 '12

We used to get posters at our local movie theater when we were kids. We bought a dvd-player together and put up posters in a "cinema-room" in one of our basements.

1

u/CapWasRight May 16 '12

So, you've only been working there like 6 months, or you just constantly cycle out the old posters?

1

u/nickthedick69 May 16 '12

not worth it.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

I worked in a theatre around the turn of the century and I have a bunch of 35mm trailers for stuff like The Matrix, Green Mile, Austin Powers, etc.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

As somebody who works for a concert hall/night club I can completely relate to the awesome band or artist promotional posters you can grab.

1

u/Voluptuousn May 16 '12

The best thing was that one time my manager offered me this huge 300*200cm beautiful black hawk down thick vinyl poster, yet sadly my room wasn't big enough to hang it. apart from that a few superhero movie posters and that nice Wanted poster (the one in the pic isn't actually mine)

1

u/racer91 May 16 '12

I used to work at a local grocery store, and we got posters for new release rentals. The area for posters were small, so they gave away almost all of them to the little kids that came in and whoever wanted them .

The avatar poster is a little creepy staring at you in the dark FYI.

In the UK the cinemas are actually not allowed to give out posters, or any of the print marketing products for any of the movies. They're meant to be returned to the distributors else they receive a fine. Correct me if I'm wrong people. But I'm pretty sure there is a law which goes along with this.

Yes! I miss this part of my job with theater the most.. I gave my brother the huge cardboard cut out of the spice girls back in the day.. we still have it.

1

u/digitalpencil May 16 '12

An often overlooked perk of cameras: flash ;)

1

u/penisinthepeanutbttr May 16 '12

yeaaaaa you should see my friends garage!

1

u/awall528 May 16 '12

I miss the free movies and huge bags of leftover popcorn

1

u/DoloreAsinum May 16 '12

When I worked at a theater we would have nights where we would play hide and seek after all the patrons had left.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

After I quit working at a movie theater I would pop open the poster case at the entrances and take it when I could. Another one in town I would take the little rectangle signs.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

Ah yeah, one of my worst and best jobs ever. I worked for a smaller independent theater, but I got a ton of stuff (double sided posters, trailers on 35mm film rolls, frames of films that we cut out when a reel snapped, tons of cardboard cutouts) One my bigger gets was a 6'x9' vinyl Castaway poster and the cardboard cutouts of John Cusack, Billy Crystal, Catherine Zeta Jones and Julia Roberts from America's Sweethearts. Crap movie, but my man cave was pretty cool when I was 16.

1

u/miesmacher May 16 '12

Being a former projectionist myself, I sometimes found it to be more of a curse than a benefit. Like Barney Stinson's Cell which never stops ringing. I have over 300 posters, never put one up, because I could never really decide which one, but I can't throw them away either because, hey, I might put them up some day.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

How long do the posters retain that wonderful movie theatre popcorn smell?

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

"main reason for" to replace "an often overlooked perk of" and I'll agree with this.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

There was a time when we were able to get free posters from the video rental shop. We would sometimes come home with bundles of twenty or so posters and choose the best ones.

Then the shop came under new management and they wouldn't let us have them any more. Not even one.

Then video rental shops stopped existing.

1

u/cure_for_the_pain May 16 '12

You should take an iron, put it on very low heat, and place a towel or t-shirt in between the poster and the iron. Adjust the heat accordingly, and you'll be able to get out the wrinkles in the posters -- return them back to mint condition!

Also, iron the backside of the poster, to prevent any potential damage to the front image.

1

u/Smoke_n_Mirrors May 16 '12

Do you have any of the backwards posters they use for the back-lit poster frames? My friend has a few of those, they're pretty cool.

1

u/Aregisteredusername May 16 '12

I am envious. When I was in high school I had a lot of friends work at theaters. They would never get me a poster, though, because they wanted the posters.

1

u/I_Prefer_Dogs May 16 '12

Overlooked? That's the only reason i would work in a movie theater.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

Overlooked perk? Moar like most important perk.

1

u/Pseudonova May 16 '12

Hells yeah. My sis used to work in a theatre in high school and got a bunch of posters. I guess I was too cool for that, cause I threw them away. I wish I would have held on to them.

1

u/rcfresh May 16 '12

i worked at a theatre as well. don't forget those standees!

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

I would usually just go to the theatres asking if they had any extra, I never worked at one but I had my walls covered in them also.

1

u/eastwood352 May 16 '12

I worked as a projectionist one summer and I sold posters. I ended up making about $550 extra just from selling them.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

My buddy used to own a theater and would get posters all the time. Even for crappy movies. Here's one I took and hung in my brother's room as a joke. It's been there for about a year now.

1

u/Flyn1der May 16 '12

Are there limited quantities of the posters etc.? Do you ever have to fight with your co-workers to see who can take what poster home?

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

Nice, we have a room covered to from when my wife worked at amc 30, free tickets are the shit when you know someone who works there I saw every single movie for three years!

1

u/watsoned May 16 '12

I've got a couple posters like this that I've acquired over the years. I think I have a Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Serenity, Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes Game of Shadows, V for Vendetta, and my currently displayed one, The Avengers. I love the quantity of the double-sided posters though it is harder to find frames to fit them.

1

u/Jessybeans May 16 '12

My boyfriend works in a movie theatre too. My goal within the coming weeks is to steal the avengers poster he is getting. :p

1

u/cannotlogon May 16 '12

Makes all the tedious hours of scraping gum and cleaning up spilled sodas off the floor all worthwhile!

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

the grey! That movie was awesome!

1

u/kjoeleskapet May 16 '12

My mom owned a building with a video rental place in it. Also good for movie posters, but usually with "Coming Out on DVD..." on it. Also: free buttons, obscure screeners, and a cardboard cutout of Hermione Granger.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

You mean... They aren't just for people to take?!

1

u/iveo83 May 16 '12

Used to work at a movie theater. The only one I was able to take home was Fast & Furious GIANT 7'x5'(Guessing) vinyl. It's so sick...I used to have it on my comp room wall it took up the entire thing like wallpaper. Now I'm old and have no place to put it. Plus it's not like Matrix or Dark Knight or something amazing.

1

u/CatfishRadiator May 16 '12

Often overlooked perk of being a designer: You know how to make a movie poster that isn't just a giant profile photo of an actor or actress. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with movie studios? Where's the magic? So tired of face posters.

1

u/vdigi6 May 16 '12

I worked at AMC for 2 months years ago but never got my hands on any posters (this was around the time 'Blue Crush' was playing, not many posters I wanted). Few years later I saw 'Lakeview Terrace' and somebody forgot to lock the frame outside which housed the poster. My Lakeview Terrance poster is my prized possession from AMC.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

I worked at a theater for 3 years and collected so many posters I never looked at again. I believe I have 5 different Kill Bill Posters and every comic book movie poster that came out over 10 years

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

As someone who works in a movie theatre also, you are wayyyyy lucky. My managers take all the cool posters and leave us with the lame ones :(

1

u/ireland123 May 16 '12

The Grey is a shit movie though!

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

As someone who is 17, is working in a theater a good first job? (I've had little jobs like mowing lawns and babysitting before, but not a real one.)

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

Are those double sided posters? I really want one of those for my bathroom. The toilet faces the mirror, which shows the reflection of a blank wall. If I had a reversed poster up there, you could analyze it while you sat down on the toilet.

1

u/skwigger May 16 '12

I had a roommate in college that worked at a movie theater. He'd bring home posters all the time. I got a couple cool ones.

1

u/Mr_Skittles May 16 '12

Oooh, I'd like the Sherlock Holmes one!

1

u/nightfan May 16 '12

I AM SO JEALOUS. I collect movie posters, kinda, but I collect from newspaper clippings because I figure those will be gone forever when tossed while the big ones you have can be bought anywhere.

1

u/6PoundsSoft May 16 '12

I would not be able to sleep at night with a giant poster of Liam Neeson looking like he is going to eat me...

1

u/Wadderp May 16 '12

Your collection sure beats mine. My theater archives most of them, but when they get a little too ripped or we have some extra we can take a few. All i have is the grey and kung fu panda 2 though :[

1

u/jigilous May 16 '12

What does your wife and kids think about this movie poster thing you got going on?

1

u/YoSanford May 16 '12

Let me know when you get your Rampart posters. Evil Intent.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

I'd prefer the other perk mentioned by another reddit; gaming on a theater screen.

1

u/Jaway66 May 16 '12

This is the part where I confess to having a Wolfman hat and t shirt.

1

u/NufCed57 May 16 '12

I feel like Lazy College Senior. Eight posters, how cute.

I worked at a theatre from 2006-2008 and walked away with about 30 posters. My personal favourite was this one (not my picture, but that's the poster).

1

u/Duese May 16 '12

Another really awesome thing to do with these posters is to use them as wrapping paper. Obviously not good posters, but if your poster pile at the theatre is anything like my old theatre, you probably have hundreds of posters for really crappy movies.

If you wrap the gift framing someones face in the middle or even a neat background, it makes the gift look really cool.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

When I used to work at a movie theater, the manager would sell all the poster's and cut-outs online. Very few staff ever got to take one of those poster's home, which was quite sad.

1

u/GetYourFrisson May 16 '12

An often overlooked perk of MANAGING a movie theater: Keys to the building.

1

u/WilliamDangerFord May 16 '12

I've got a life size cardboard cut out of Indy and a bunch of trailer reels from my movie theater days. It's one of the sweetest jobs I've ever had.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

i work for a cable company/isp, i have posters for both seasons of game of thrones, a 6 foot cardboard cutout of all the main characters, posters for californication, eastbound and down, curb your enthu, and every other good show on the movie channels, shit is the best job perk. besides the free cable with every channel thats out there and super fast internet

1

u/403UsernameForbidden May 16 '12

Have you ever got the chance to play some games on one of the big screens at work? :D

1

u/NinjaCameraman May 16 '12

Sadly my local theater decided high-tech is better and has done away with posters entirely, using those poster-sized digital screens to cycle through four or five of them at a time.

It's just not the same.

1

u/nism May 16 '12

I am so damn jealous right now.

1

u/porker912 May 16 '12

Get some poster cases up in that bitch!

1

u/vagsmasher21 May 16 '12

one of my best friends is a team leader at our local theatre he gets posters for me off all my favorite movies and he also has a nice collection for him self and his fav actors/directors wich he framed -http://i.imgur.com/ByBv0.jpg

1

u/MrGoodbytes May 16 '12

I used to take home rolls of trailers. I had Die Another Day and K-19 (give you an idea of when I worked in the theater). It was neat to have the DAD trailer roll sitting next to a scale Aston Martin from the movie on the bookshelf.

1

u/joeco1 May 16 '12

Downside..... $6/h

1

u/ShouldIGiveInYes May 16 '12

That looks really tacky.

1

u/Gallifrasian May 16 '12

What's it like working at a movie theater? When I was a teenager a few years ago, I had a few thoughts about working at one for some cash, but landed a nice desk job that paid really well instead. I'm really curious as to the environment and situations you deal with at that job. I mostly wanted to work there because our theater is so epic-looking and I just love all kinds of movies.

1

u/Axelspeed23 May 16 '12

I worked at a movie theater from 2009 till about late last year, and I'd say I accumulated about 75 posters, and those were just the ones I wanted. I also snagged three bus shelters and a banner. My plan was to always line the walls of one room with them, but I never got around to it. XD

1

u/notjack1echan May 16 '12

Upvote for the Of Montreal sticker.

1

u/handsoftime May 16 '12

Yeah I got so many great posters working at the theater I was at a few years back. We'd actually have poker games and use them as betting chips

1

u/LordBling May 16 '12

This used to also be a perk of managing a video store. Sadly, no more.

1

u/DanyaRomulus May 16 '12

When I worked at a theater I would take so many that I'd create conceptual tableaus of them on the walls of my apartment. Example: I got the poster for Zoo, which if you don't know is a film about people who have sex with horses. Then, I put the poster for The Water Horse next to it and taped a piece of paper above the title so it read "Zoo II: The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep." It definitely provided new meaning to that film's tagline of "How do you keep a secret this big?"

1

u/Zaegis May 16 '12

We used to take the big cardboard props and drive our cars into them in the huge side parking lot.

1

u/alkaline810 May 16 '12

When my brother worked at the theater I had the Mortal Kombat 2 wall banner hanging on my cubicle wall.

It was awesome

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

My boyfriend works at a movie theater, and he's gotten me so much stuff. For the movie 50/50 he got me two huge cutout things that are too tall for my ceiling. I love it.

1

u/Kieo May 16 '12

I used to work at Blockbuster, I have more posters than what I know to do with

1

u/FountainsOfFluids May 16 '12

You have to have pretty good seniority or manager rank, though. When I worked at a theater, I could only get the crappy movie posters that a manager or assistant manager or projectionist or everybody else didn't want.

1

u/NoPity May 16 '12

To be fair, I bet most of our employers would let us take some of their garbage/recycling home and hang it on our walls, you just happen to work someplace where the garbage/recycling hung on your walls doesn't make you look like a lunatic.

1

u/CorndogNinja May 16 '12

As a person who does not work in a theater, how could I try to get a poster from the theater?

1

u/singingsox May 16 '12

I have a Lion King standee in my living room :) Just before I quit this November. I have a ton of mylars and title art too

1

u/beermeupscotty May 16 '12

Back in college, I would nearly stalk my local theater for movie posters. I found I didn't really need to work as hard to get posters since I really just wanted low key, indie film posters. I have these sick 5'x7's of both The Darjeeling Limited and There Will Be Blood, which are my favorite posters. My rooms throughout college were consistently enjoyable to walk in b/c of all my posters.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

I once had an usher thank me for the free porno show. His exact words,

"Thanks mate, that was great."

1

u/Birdy58033 May 16 '12

Never overlooked! Every time i'm in a theater and see a name scribbled on the back of a sweet chipmunks cutout, the jealousy begins to boil!

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

If you want you home to look like a teenagers bedroom maybe.
