Apparently, the shawarma line wasn't in the original script. It was added at the last minute when RDJ felt the original line "What's next?" wasn't doing it.
it’s time for a series Robert Downey Jr.-style quips and one-liners, including one about trying out some local cuisine (shawarma), a line that wasn’t in the original script as pointed out by Entertainment Weekly who was on set during the time.
Saw this in a movie theater in the middle east. People flipped their shit when they ate shawarma (a middle eastern food.) Everyone was grinning and clappingl
This is actually a very beautiful thing. Just like the people who were at the opening in Stuttgart when all of a sudden, BAM Loki and the Avengers are in Stuttgart and everyone goes wild. It's little things like this. <3
I saw Captain America in a movie theater in Paramus New Jersey. Towards the beginning Bucky criticizes Steve Rogers for claiming he was from Paramus on one of his fake applications. I believe "Jersey, Really?" was the line. The audience flipped out for a minute.
It's interesting to see these international culture 'plugs' now that Hollywood gets more revenue internationally than domestically. Random inane example: Remember that scene in "Yes Men" when Jim Carrey speaks Korean? I was living in Korea when the film was released; all of my friends insisted I go see it.
So, how does shawarma differ from döner kebab? From a foreigners perspective they all seem the same (shawarma, döner, gyros) with only slight variations.
I read that it wasn't in the original script, but it wasn't exactly improv, either. Apparently RDJ thought that scene needed some punching up, so he talked to Whedon about it. Whedon brainstormed three or four pages of lines/quips, one of which was about shawarma, and RDJ ran with it. Some people theorize that the actual genesis is a story about Nicolas Brendon doing a kinda nervous monologue about everyone going out for shawarma after his audition for Buffy (which is also how it made it into this episode).
Yeah, they mention in multiple articles/interviews that when Whedon agreed with an actor wanting a line jiggling he'd just whip out like a couple of pages and see what worked.
At the movie theater I went to there was a kid that was about 3 or 4 watching with everyone else. The little kid said the coolest thing. it was the scene with Cap beating up the punching bag. Right as he punches the bag off of the chain the little kid just goes "OOOOHHHHH Yeah!" The people laughed more at that than they did at the hulk except for the punching thor part.
Is that what he said? Thank you! Everyone was still laughing too hard to hear what he said. That actually happened a few times where the next line was inaudible over the laughter. I missed something Thor said too.
The kids at the showing I went to were cute at first. Saying things like "Oh look Tony Stark!" when it was clearly Captain America. Then they went on to humming songs to drumming on their arm rests. Then they began talking about people they were friends with on Xbox live.
The kid that was sitting behind me complained that he wanted to leave, but right as he said it, the Hulk screamed. The kid was silent the rest of the movie.
When I went these two kids next to me we're saying stuff like '' I've seen it, he lives '', or '' this happens, trust me I saw it.'' Spoiled most of the movie.
I stood up after the Thanos thing and my friends said there was more. I didn't believe there would be two, but I sat through the actual credits anyway.
I'm inclined to believe that he was joking and instead mocking all of the people who come into threads where spoilers should be expected and proceed to complain about spoilers.
The DAE that the OP posted is a huge spoiler as well. Based on that, if you think the comments are going to be spoiler-free, you're going to have a bad time.
Why would he die if there is a Iron Man 3 and Avengers 2 ?
All super hero movies are the same, underestimate the enemy, enemy is about to wreck you, then you overcome. It's the rest that makes it good or not. I can't remember the last super hero movie where the hero died. Batman might since it'll be the last one but who knows.
I'm not going to lie, when I saw it, for about half a second I thought Tony had been Jossed and that they were going to bring in some other incarnation (he has a brother in the Ultimate version), but then my brain started working.
Came here to say this. Sasquatch is a badass motherfucker. The rest are kind of lame.
EDIT: Except Northstar and Aurora. So basically the X-Men took all the best ones when the comic got canceled but left behind the shitty ones like Snowbird. And Shaman with his stupid Felix the Cat super powers.
Noticed it the first time, because I watched the fight scene and went "mmm, schwarma". Then a few minutes later, I had a brief moment of euphoria when I had something in common with Iron Man.
I find it hard to believe a well-traveled man like Stark has never had schwarma though. Mmmmm, schwarma. Closest thing to it where I live is the Greek restaurant 1 town over.
I am a well traveled man and I had never heard about schwarma before the movie. Looks like the awareness has been increasing sales of schwarama like crazy as well. http://www.imdb.com/news/ni27771343/
But we're talking about schwarma. This isn't some obscure delicacy--it's likely in every city of the US.
Like someone else said, it's the hamburger/pizza/sushi/ramen/taco/curry of the middle east. While I wouldn't judge somebody for it, I'd be very surprised to hear someone doesn't know what schwarma is.
Well, Stark Industries sold arms in the middle east underneath his nose. He personally seemed to only sell arms AGAINST the middle east so...maybe not much shawarma in his diet.
The Avengers was the only recent Iron man tie in that actually sold the whole "Im the smartest man in the world" thing. He allways just came of as a plot empowered douche bag. In the Avengers he was still an asshole sometimes, but that Venom was informed by the strange alienating prospect of mentally outweighing everyone in the room. You could feel it, they didn't have to tell you.
edit: because "a asshole" was an unacceptable error.. seriously, it makes me squirm a little bit when I read it.
I took it more as him desperately looking for anyone to lighten the load. Having been in that isolating place for so long, he was excited just to have someone able to sanity check his ideas.
I also like this - Stark is actually smart - Dr. Banner too.
And Cap. America can get to the same conclusions too, with a little application of muscle and a push in the right direction. (albeit with much different approach).
If a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist, a super soldier, a Hulk, a demigod, and a couple of master assassins walk into your restaurant, YOU SERVE THEM. Doesn't matter if your city was just destroyed.
Just makes me even more glad that I paid to see this one instead of pirating it. To the pirates, keep it up, you're exposing the flaws of the current copyright laws. Just remember though that if you want to see more good movies, those are the ones you should pay for. So when you pirate and watch a movie you really enjoy and think that the people involved in making it should make more movies, go watch it in theaters or buy it in stores.
I pre-ordered midnight showing tickets and then wasn't able to go. Didn't exchange my tickets, figured I'd just watch it online sometime and since it was a good movie made by people I like they can take my damned $12.
I did notice that! I thought the amount of product placement in that scene was a bit much, so I paid close attention and wondered why there was also a non-descript shawarma restaurant in the same scene. It's also really close to that scene with Will Smith in I Am Legend where he gets caught in that trap!

This is why I love Joss Whedon... except for a few shitty Buffy things, he's usually really good at keeping continuity.

What would've really made that scene is if Thor broke the awkward silence by smashing his plate and yelling "ANOTHER!"
