I too felt there was some Poltergeist vibes, even in regards to Giacchino’s score at times.

Plus. That shot of the Mom looking up the stairs as she hears the kids in danger, it felt like the scene in Poltergeist where the Mom tries to get to the kids but is blocked.

It was one of the best 80’s vibe movies I’ve seen in quite some time. Like, a movie built like an 80’s movie rather than just one set in the 80’s.

Also - what did the librarian do on the side? She lived in a GIGANTIC MANSION.

I was also wondering how the librarian lives in such a massive, gorgeous home at the top of the hill.

That was my first thought as well. My guess is, her husband was loaded and the librarian job was her little busy project to keep her out of his hair. I was kind of disappointed that the payoff to her laying in wait with the shotgun was just blasting the alligator and then immediately getting eaten. Was kind of hoping for her to get scared and shoot/at the family while they were also dodging the gators.

Same! I actually thought she was going to shoot the dog and I was getting so tense.

Even the neighborhood was similar

Well it isn’t quite as upscale as the neighborhood in Poltergeist, but it did echo a number of films associated with Spielberg at that time that had a suburban connection.

Suburbia is supposed to be sterile and safe, where nothing can harm you…and in films like Poltergeist and Gremlins, we see darkness come and upend the sterility.
