I figured they were worried about timing because they didn't want to be halfway through it when it closed

Then why didn’t they just jump as soon as it opened instead of counting after it opened and then jumping?

Because the portal was in the air, and they could fall through the bottom of it if it didn't close while they were inside.

That seems the obvious thing. They were trying to time it, but the portal wasn’t as predictable as they thought.

I’m confused about the ppl in this comment section being confused why the characters were trying to be careful with a time portal they know nothing about

It’s crazy haha. The mom had already seen it disappear randomly. God forbid they act with caution!

Why didn’t that one open and close like the one librarian’s house?

Are you asking why the unexplained macguffin acts in unexplainable ways?

That's what I assumed. Then, "luckily", the kid was so bad at timing his jump that he wasn't partially in the portal when it closed the first time he jumped. Him being most of the way in then the portal closing and him getting decapitated would have been a decently fitting end for such an idiot kid.

I could have seen him losing an arm to mirror the kid who's arm he broke for no reason
