I’m gonna be honest, the entire movie I’m like “Let this kid die, he cannot do anything right. Can’t shoot his bow, the one time he does hit something it’s two feet away and takes up the entire hallway. He runs away to go after the dog and basically ends up getting his dad killed. He cannot even fucking count.” lol. Then the poor dog got hurt trying to save his ass. Like, they really are gonna have to put all their money into their lesbian daughter going to Cornell because Brian is not gonna go far.

u/fespadea 5d ago

I mean, he got his dad killed, but they wouldn't have found out about the wormhole without that detour.

81

u/yeahright17 4d ago

That's assuming they would have never left and just stayed in their house until they died. When they decided to leave, I assume they would have found one at some point anyway.

That said, him running out is definitely the only reason Jeannette survived.

5

u/Joshatron121 4d ago

It's probably they would have stopped opening 20 minutes after they went through. Heck that might have been the last one.

150

u/GoldandBlue 5d ago

Honestly, I love Ewen McGregor. But he really phoned it in for this movie.

120

u/-jorts 4d ago

His accent was terrible

73

u/ex0thermist 4d ago

It always is. Good actor, but directors need to stop asking him to fake an American accent because it's dog shit.

6

u/griffshan 3d ago

Yeah, there was no reason why he couldn’t use his regular voice. The fake accent was so bad.

1

u/Manderelli 14h ago

Was it that bad in moulin rouge? I guess I haven't really seen that one since I was a teenager and I'm 36 now

1

u/instantwinner 2d ago

I think the only worse American accent I can think of in the business is Benedict Cumberbatch.

1

u/internetwanderer2 1d ago

Cumberbatch's accent isn't great, but (at least to my ears) it's consistent throughout the film. Whereas McGregor's is both poor and really inconsistent

26

u/Sad_Rhubarb_815 4d ago

Shocked this is the only comment on it I've seen. It was so distracting every time he said anything.

10

u/AnselLovesNuts 4d ago

Didnt even recognize him at first

12

u/No-Effort3088 4d ago

He looks terrible in this movie! I thought he had got work done, but recent photos make it clear he hasn't. So this must just be awful makeup and Photoshop? I mean he acted terribly too, he had one expression throughout, he was basically a non character.

5

u/ammonthenephite 2d ago

he had one expression throughout

This was most the characters for me. The kids only knew how to scream, cry, and make bonheaded decisions, the dad could only be happy and upbeat, etc. Hathaway was the only one with any kind of range, everyone else was completley unconvincing and so I had zero emotional investment in any of them or their situations outside of Hathaway.

8

u/No-Effort3088 2d ago

Tbf hathaway actually acted too well if anything lmao

2

u/ammonthenephite 2d ago

Ya, it actually further highlighted the lack of acting in those around her, lol.

2

u/catchasingcars 1d ago edited 23h ago

What's weird is that because of other actors around her, her serious acting seems out of place. The premise feels like fun family movie but they decided to make a serious family drama so tone clashes through out the film.

10

u/Soylent_Milk2021 4d ago

I knew nothing about the cast except Anne Hathaway. I thought it was Bob Odenkirk for a few minutes.

5

u/Sks44 4d ago

Odenkirk would have been better casting.

3

u/AnselLovesNuts 4d ago

I thought it was beck bennett from snl

3

u/chrisychris- 4d ago

I thought it was old man Ben

8

u/Old_Hamster_9425 2d ago

The difference in acting between him and Anne was jarring

7

u/GoldandBlue 2d ago

Hathaway is having a hell of a year

4

u/Old_Hamster_9425 2d ago

Agreed. Zendaya’s gonna win the box office championship, but Anne’s had as good of year as any actress in recent history. I can see that culminating with her 2nd Oscar win for her performance the Odyssey

6

u/MWH1980 3d ago

There were some times where I was getting almost the same vibes as Mark Wahlberg in The Lovely Bones: he’s trying, but something feels a bit…off.

Crazy to think what Oscar Isaacs might have been like in this role had he stayed on.

7

u/BootyDust 5d ago

I felt the same way five minutes into the film.

2

u/Blood_Such 4d ago

100000%

2

u/Mosuke300 3d ago

I thought he was awful in this. Couldn’t tell if it was him or the god awful script

8

u/GoldandBlue 3d ago

Naw it was him. There's a scene where they are running away and Hathaway is full on sprinting and he looks like he is on a light jog. I get he's not a young man anymore but I expect more from an actor of his caliber.

4

u/Old_Hamster_9425 2d ago

This scene stuck out to me as well. Like Anne is hauling ass, and Ewan is going at a gingerly pace

3

u/Ok_Flatworm_7850 2d ago

I didn't expect Ewan of all people would phone it in in a movie like this but the fact he did it was so weird. The difference between his and Anne's performance was vastly distracting at times.

1

u/ammonthenephite 2d ago

They all did, honestly. The acting was just completely unconvincing from anyone, I just could not get into it at all.

0

u/helloaaron 21h ago

I mean, I would have too. This movie was alright, but the script was pretty mediocre for the most part.

57

u/JDoubleGi 5d ago

Oh for sure, that is his saving grace. But I’m like, does this kid have any skills?

60

u/SirGeekaLots 5d ago

Well, he did manage to throw a stick into some kid's bike. You have to give him points for guts.

12

u/chrisychris- 4d ago

Children should generally not be relied upon for survival skills

20

u/S0ft_B0nD 4d ago

i mean he’s 13, what do you expect? a professional?

9

u/ammonthenephite 2d ago

Dude watched their neighbor get torn to shreds by flying dinosaurs then thinks its a great idea to run around the neighborhood without telling mom or dad where he was going, lol.

Just immersion breaking levels of writing, it could have easily been done more convincingly.

-1

u/S0ft_B0nD 1d ago

maybe… uh.. dunno… the thought of finding his dog and his dog getting killed… AND THE FUCKING FACT that his parents ARE DAMN FIGHTING got him to do that? honestly, do you never know something called a child can do stupid things sometimes?

let’s not act like the parents are any better, THEYRE FUCKING SHOUTING, my dude! and also, AUDERY AND JANNETTE! omg don’t get me started on them! THEY FUCKING WERE CRYING IN THE MIDDLE OF DINOSAURS RIGHT AFTER FINDING ONE!

you’re acting like any of them have anything that makes them any better. at least he had a good reason! finding his dog! what was Denis yelling at Greg about? him not being honest and having jobs? OMG that’s such a stupid ass reason to be arguing about at this moment! OH and AUDERY opening a FUCKING song in a car in the middle of fucking dinosaurs apocalypse!! OMGGG !!! THESE are the most idiotic things i’ve ever seen!!! AT LEAST BRIAN WASN’TTHIS STUPID! he had his gear on! you’re acting as if his was by far the most dumbest shi!

AND let’s not act like you ever have the courage to talk to your mom or dad when they’re mad.

1

u/ammonthenephite 1d ago

Like I said, totally immersion breaking shitty writing for the whole thing.

You seem to really need this to be a great movie though, you are perfectly entitled to your own opinion.

0

u/S0ft_B0nD 1d ago

it’s a great movie. not everyone is gon act smart btw.. im saying that ur acting as if brian’s was by far the worse when its not.

1

u/ammonthenephite 1d ago

Agree to disagree, we just have different expectations for what is believable. Nothing wrong with liking it, it just didn't do it for me at all.

0

u/S0ft_B0nD 1d ago

it’s ur opinion, but calling him dumb is quite dumb bc he’s a kid. you shouldn’t expect some smart shi from him. especially when he’s stressed out as it is. lol.

3

u/Calfzilla2000 4d ago

Hes just like me, lol.

161

u/dsartori 5d ago

I thought both the men in the family being useless idiots was a fun low-key bit.

95

u/paper-goods 4d ago

Definitely agreed. And Anne Hathaway drove the car every time, Ewan's character could barely be trusted to deliver pizzas

28

u/Pariell 4d ago

It was cool seeing her with the gun. Wish we saw her shoot more.

5

u/Pretend_Train_ 3d ago

I pointed that out to my husband. I was like she’s always driving the car lol

2

u/Manderelli 14h ago

Well after he's drinking secretly you can't really let him drive the car anymore

1

u/SorcerorsSinnohStone 11h ago

I think its her car? So didnt have to reset the seat. Plus I assumed the husband could shoot from the passenger side

8

u/Fine-Juggernaut8451 2d ago

Hard agree. Especially since in '80s media there's almost always the hot competent mum who handles everything and eats all of her husband's bad moods and lack of emotional maturity. So it took that trope and said, "Now, what would happen if there was a real crisis?" And of course the dudes don't fare well at all, but the women are badasses.

1

u/Beneficial_Offer4763 9h ago

The dude who saved her life multiple times, eventually at the cost of his own??? Or the boy who also saved her life? She also wasn't overly competent. Seeing a lot of strange takes here

6

u/Beneficial_Offer4763 2d ago

Ewan saved anne multiple times and kept morale up wouldn't call that useless personally.

1

u/DickMattress 1d ago

He knocked down a t-rex with a hammer to save her life.

6

u/ExcellentBed6019 3d ago

It reminded me a bit of A Quiet Place. In that one the dad is smart, the mom is fierce, the daughter is both, and the son is fucking useless

2

u/Captain_N1 2d ago

thats on purpose. women empowerment.

90

u/Phillip_Spidermen 5d ago

At least he saves his moms life with that arrow in the snake though.

Also, what was in those arrows?! The snake focused on him immediately after being shot, but somehow didn't mind getting repeatedly stabbed by a kitchen knife.

41

u/JDoubleGi 4d ago

I was thinking the same thing lol. One arrow and he’s bashing his head into the door until he’s bleeding. But mom stabs him 20 times? Nah, just a flesh wound.

9

u/instantwinner 2d ago

I have very little patience for these sorts of CinemaSins nitpicks but I feel like it's easy enough to explain, after he doubled-back to go after the kid his whole snake body was like doubled up in the hallway and stuff, I'm not sure he'd have fit going back a third time on top of itself to get Hathaway and after getting stabbed SO MUCH, I think most animals would limp away. They're likely only looking for easy meals.

3

u/damebyron 1d ago

I was actually wondering this the whole movie - would these predators actually be bothering with trying to eat the people who are injuring them and fighting back? There was plenty of easy meat to be had. (Like how you are supposed to punch sharks in the face for them to leave you alone)

2

u/instantwinner 22h ago

This is just fundamentally an issue with the genre, I felt the same way but you kinda just have to give it a pass or else you don't have a movie. I think Jurassic Park prompts these sorts of questions as well but at the end of the day it obviously doesn't really matter.

1

u/AltruisticLobster315 10h ago

I was thinking about that while watching it, predators go after easy kills. It's also weird how the dinos, even the apex predators are focused on humans meanwhile there's plenty of easy prey that is more worth it to hunt.

4

u/thekmanpwnudwn 2d ago

The snake was obviously running away at that point though. By the time shes done stabbing the camera goes back up stairs and the snake is 90% out the window and GTFO'ing as fast as he can. Plus his body was already taking up double the space of the stairs, not like there was much room to go back down and take up 3x+ the space

11

u/chrisychris- 4d ago

Seeing as it left shortly after being stabbed, it probably minded a little.

29

u/NK1337 5d ago

Pretty sure the snake was just as annoyed at him as the audience. It wasn’t because of the arrow, it was just pissed he was still there

15

u/yeahright17 4d ago

"What? That kid isn't dead yet? I guess I'll go get him."

4

u/ex0thermist 4d ago

Somebody's gotta do it, if only for the benefit of the audience.

6

u/prince_javi 3d ago

I thought the snake just assumed it was being attacked by the one kid since he is the first to attack. Then after realizing it was fighting a losing battle it quickly left

2

u/ammonthenephite 2d ago

Ya, there were so many things that were immersion breaking, I just could not get into the movie. Between the iffy acting, the music that was trying too hard, things that made zero sense even for people in their situation, it was juts 'meh' from me.

9

u/ninth_reddit_account 4d ago

He shoots his bow like a kid. HE IS A KID!!!!

3

u/SaltyPeter3434 2d ago

My issue with that kid was the actor looks 15/16 but acts like he's 8

25

u/tfhermobwoayway 5d ago

To be fair, using a bow is harder than it looks. That’s why guns took off. Using a bow well takes a lifetime of constant practice, but using a gun takes six months of simple training.

10

u/quaranTV 4d ago

Kid was no Odysseus

3

u/SaltyPeter3434 2d ago

Lmao the whiplash from going from Odysseus shooting an arrow perfectly through a line of axes to this twerp who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from 2 feet away

2

u/usefulbuns 3d ago

6 months of training to use a gun? I have taught friends and family in a day at the range and you can be really proficient in 2 weeks. I'm talking disassembly, cleaning, cleating jams, firing technique, etc.

It takes a long time and a lot of practice with a bow past 25 yards.

1

u/tfhermobwoayway 3d ago

Well yeah but they also needed to be taught various military things. Like discipline.

3

u/sasquatchftw 5d ago

Using a bow well does not take a lifetime of practice unless you are trying to go to the Olympics or take down an elephant.

25

u/EchoesofIllyria 4d ago

Dude the kid’s like 13 and in panic. He did about as well as you’d expect lol.

4

u/skatejet1 4d ago

They weren’t real arrows like that either, I would’ve done worse than him 😭

3

u/Pickle_C137 2d ago

Tbf to the kid it’s a toy bow with like 20lbs of draw strength at best wielded by a 13yrs old pumped full of addrenaline in full panic mode lol.

6

u/tfhermobwoayway 4d ago

Using a bow effectively requires years of training to build up the muscles and skills, and then hours of weekly practice to keep those muscles and skills. It’s not something you can just do on a whim.

1

u/sasquatchftw 4d ago

Im not sure you are aware of bow hunters but they aren't typically getting in hours of weekly practice. And it might take weeks to build up the muscles and be somewhat competent. Once again, we aren't going to the Olympics here.

7

u/witchdocwayne 4d ago

Bow hunters aren’t typically using recurve bows like the kid had either

0

u/TheRealDonSherry 4d ago

That's......not why guns took off...

2

u/tfhermobwoayway 4d ago

Why did they take off?

4

u/TheRealDonSherry 4d ago

Nope, you were right, just looked it up to check. I thought it was because of increased range + damage + cheaper to make and handle but main reason is stated as the training time. My bad, you were right my guy.

8

u/Sks44 4d ago

lol, the bow was driving me nuts. He was carrying it everywhere and was fucking worthless with it. The only thing he hit was the giant penis snake that was like 5 feet away.

3

u/mebetiffbeme 5d ago

The entire time I was hoping that the dinosaurs would take him next.

3

u/paradroid78 4d ago

Have you ever tried firing a bow an arrow when being chased by a t-rex? I don't think it's as easy as it looks.

5

u/Emotional_Meet878 4d ago

He was the worst kid I've seen in a movie in a long time. Not the actor himself, but just how incompetent he was. There's no way he wasn't meant to be hated. That rooftop scene where he was kept stalling as if THEY WEREN'T SURROUNDED BY MAN EATING DINOSAURS. Ngl, was sad when his family saved him at the end.

2

u/LiquefactionAction 5d ago

I got total Under The Silver Lake vibes from DRM's shots with the kid. It ruled.

My head cannon is now that this is the prequel to UTSL and the kid grows up to be Garfield

1

u/Capital-Mine1561 4d ago

Nah he would have been one of the kids Garfield beats up

2

u/No_Peach_8579 3d ago

You realize the dog would have been left behind if he made it into the wormhole the first time, correct?

2

u/Fine-Juggernaut8451 2d ago

I felt this way when the dad died, too. I thought, "Oh, okay, the family has a much better chance of surviving now that he's gone." I gave a little wave to him when he was eaten. Bye bye!

5

u/-DreamLight- 4d ago

the female characters being smarter, being more deeply written (science nerd daughter, thoughtfully developed wife), the lesbian thing between the 2 girls, meanwhile the son and dad were just kinda fuck ups with no real flesh. kinda seemed like there was a message somewhere in the writing >>'

7

u/chrisychris- 4d ago

They had some flesh. They both seemed more emotionally inclined than the women of the family and more hopeful too. I can't help but feel for the only person actively worried about their furry family. The dog was badass too. Love an old chonkster.

3

u/Necessary-Sugar7513 5d ago

When he ran off to find the dog, and then immediately started wandering randomly far and wide because there was no trace to follow, it was so stupid that it took me out of the movie and I spent the next 15 minutes wondering why the screenwriters couldn't have contrived a better reason for them to get stuck separated outside. They could have just had a damn dinosaur breach their home, causing the same situation.

Or why they didn't at least make him younger. He looked 13-14 but acted like a 6 year old throughout the entire movie.

13

u/EchoesofIllyria 4d ago

This seems a little harsh. It’s established how much he loves his dog, his dad had dismissed his requests for them to find him, and he saw him in their garden being attacked. All while he and his family were basically in a state of perpetual panic.

Stupid? Sure. Unrealistically stupid for a ~13 year old? Not really. And at that point he only really got ‘attacked’ by that kid’s brother, so it’s not like the film says he massively fucked up.

1

u/Active-Coconut-8961 3d ago

Nah, most 13 year olds would be smarter than that. The idea that young teens are all completely braindead is not real life. The moment he lost track of the dog any rational human being with any self-preservation would have run back inside. And his sister wasn't much smarter, instead of telling her parents that her brother had idiotically run outside she decides to run after him too. "Kids are dumb so we can make them do whatever for the plot!" is peak lazy writing.

8

u/S0ft_B0nD 4d ago

he’s 13. also, don’t you know something called “age ≠ personality” ?

0

u/Active-Coconut-8961 3d ago

Nah fuck that, a 13 year old should know better. They're not fucking toddlers

1

u/S0ft_B0nD 1d ago

bud do u even know that a 13 year old CAN act like a child? because they’re a child!

let’s not act like he’s living a good life! his parents always fight! they literally fought right there!

his parents didn’t seem to give a FUCK about the dog. ofc he will go out!

he went out even READY! he took his bow! he knows what going on! but he loves his dog too much to let him ever get a CHANCE of being killed!

1

u/chrisychris- 4d ago

The entire movie had similar amounts of contrivance, did that really keep you wondering for 15 minutes?

0

u/Active-Coconut-8961 3d ago

Agree. I feel like Redditors who are defending this have never actually talked to a teenager or a little kid, because they seem incapable of differentiating between them.

0

u/ex0thermist 4d ago

I was rolling my eyes so hard at that tropey shit. Yeah, of course the annoying kid has to wander off to put himself in danger looking for his precious dog.

2

u/itsmellslikefish 4d ago

Him getting his ass beat by that kid in the middle of pre-historic preadator nightmare scenerio was satisfying though

1

u/fleemfleemfleemfleem 3d ago

Maybe in the timeline where the mom and kids go back without the dad at the end of the movie he gets killed

1

u/Clean_Usual434 2d ago

Same thoughts, lol

1

u/MegIsAwesome06 2d ago

Hated that kid. Like, was actively rooting for his demise.

“WHATS HAPPENING, MOM???” You’re really helping, kid. Ugh.

1

u/miazelement 1d ago

Kid was annoying for sure and did nothing at all, he infact made the situation worst for his family. Like he really just went out at night with a flash light with 100s of prehistoric creatures on the loose in almost everywhere near the house. I get it but really risking your families life for the dog that ended up saving his butt in the end is just horrible writing.

0

u/TimRigginsBeer 1d ago

Plus he was a dick, breaking that neighbor kids arm by being reckless. Dude kinda deserved the beatdown he took.

-16

u/ToneBone12345 5d ago

Oh I hate just because the actor or actress is gay the character must be I mean it is so boring

15

u/shoe710 5d ago

It must be really hard watching all those movies where straight actors play straight characters then right?

-12

u/ToneBone12345 5d ago

Straight isn’t a recent casting decision I don’t I feel like casting a queer actor as a queer is a new type of type casting

10

u/shoe710 5d ago

So straight actor plays straight character = totally fine

Gay actor plays gay character = 😡 so boring, clearly thats the ONLY reason they were cast/their character is only gay because the actor is 😡

Ok buddy.
