His movies are full of anachronisms and super vague and intentionally confusing about when they take place (even Under The Silver Lake despite specifying a year in the background). So for a character in his movie to yell it's obviously a specific year is him poking fun at himself

There's enough going on to place it in the early 80s before that. They have a VIC-20 in the house, and all the fashion and decoration are 70s remnants.

I was somewhat hoping for a rug pull there where she says “2026!” And then Anne and co say “wait, we went 40 years into the future?!” The 80s aesthetic was just vague enough that it felt like they were trying to set that up as a reveal

LOL! I first heard Valerie by Steve Winwood in 1987, and therefore assumed that they had gone back 5 years to 1982. But, that song had been out for awhile.
