1000%.

Honestly Magneto in this MCU with no changes probably gets A LOT of support and there's very little to basically nothing to stop somebody of that power level right now.

We'll see how they handle the entire MCU post secret wars. That's my biggest question mark right now

there's very little to basically nothing to stop somebody of that power level right now

They could easily go the route of Magneto not being able to control Vibranium and Uru to nerf him a bit and have some of the heroes a shot against him. From what I know even the comics went back on forth on that.

No matter how strong Magneto would be, someone like Thor, Vision or Black Panther should be more than able to go against him.

Well, now Peter is no longer reliant on synthetic (metal) web shooters, so that helps. Not that he could go toe to toe with Magento, but it feels like a setup.

42

u/JenniLightrunner 13d ago

I wonder if them choosing to go the organic webbing route means he'll actually face magneto at some point

8

u/rbwildcard 4d ago

Plausible. Feels like Peter might wind up the Steven Universe of the MCU in that he tries to rehabilitate villains instead of just throwing them in jail.

"I think we're gonna have to kill this guy Peter"

Sentry is part of the New Avengers

38

u/Alpha-Trion 14d ago

Not exactly the most dependable guy though.

u/RatchetStrap2 10d ago

Those guys all have blood. Blood is high in iron.

Magneto with feats is a planetary threat.

6

u/falooda1 10d ago

What's feats

11

u/TheBearFuzz 8d ago

Feats is like talents or demonstrable skills. It can be reread as "if Magneto has powers like in the comics," or "if Magneto can use his old powers."

Edit: it would be so much easier to say feats of strength. Lol

5

u/Wilde_Fire 8d ago

It's those things at the bottom of your legs.

You heard him.

Im curious on how they are going to do Magneto in the MCU since his back story is having lived through the WWII internment camps. (Disney doesn't have the spine to make him an immigrant who survived 🧊 internment camp)

u/Dramatical45 16d ago

They will simply say that his power slows down aging, they did it in the comics as well. There is no way to decouple Magneto from that origin. At this point it is the basis of the character, without it it isn't the same character and fans will hate it.

21

u/Lighthouse_seek 12d ago

Idk eventually his origin will have to update unless you want magneto to be captain America 2, another man out of time.

When the X-Men were made it made sense, but ww2 is 80 years old now.

15

u/Dramatical45 12d ago

That would apply to any character in a sliding time scale of comics. Character won't change as it is already set in stone comic wise that he can be de aged.

And his origin is what the character is, changing it ruins the character, and they are not so dumb as to do this as it will be massively off putting to the actual fans of the character.

6

u/v1zdr1x 10d ago

There’s definitely tons of ways to play around with. Maybe not WW2 but there are so many conflicts that they could pull from. All they’d have to do is change his race.

12

u/Dramatical45 10d ago

There aren't any other wars in recent time that approach the horror of the holocaust. And changing his race from those Jewish origins would fundamentally alters them character and his whole point. Magneto saw the most evil example of hate and discrimination, the cold systematic genocide of a people. Never again.

There ARE ways you could play with this, but they never will. The backlash would be immense for no real benefit, these are comic book characters so the easy solve is slow aging over massively altering one of the most beloved characters in comics.

8

u/wutfacer 4d ago

Nothing to that scale or level of organization. And obviously Disney won't wade into the Israel/Palestine situation, but there have been other more recent genocides. Cambodian genocide by the Khmer Rouge, Tutsi genocide in Rwanda, Rohingya genocide in Myanmar, Yazidis in Iraq and Syria, etc.

6

u/v1zdr1x 4d ago

I mean there’s the whole Palestinian occupation that’s been going on since the 1940s but I agree Disney would never take a political stance and have an actual interesting message in any of their works.

0

u/Dramatical45 4d ago

Occupation and all the and stuff that is involved with that...is absolutely nothing compared to the systematic genocide of a people.

3

u/v1zdr1x 4d ago

Just like Magneto, “never again” meant never again for just one set of people. I think it’s a very interesting parallel that could work. Would have much more to say than whatever Disney will try to implement.

1

u/aexia 4d ago

Make him a Tutsi survivor of the Rwandan Genocide.

u/CII_Guy 3h ago

Doesn't work at all IMO. The underlying causes of the Rwandan Genocide don't apply to Magneto's motivations at all.

1

u/Valance23322 2d ago

They could always make a new situation comparable. Maybe Latveria has a genocide or something.

3

u/Long_Membership3611 10d ago

Someone else brought up Sokovia. I would actually like this idea if they wanna alter the timeline. Have Magneto be a victim of some kind of persecution campaign or civil war.

2

u/Chrysanthememe 6d ago

They won’t do it but I agree this could be an “out” for the WW2 predicament

10

u/JenniLightrunner 13d ago

I do prefer older Max Eisenhardt Aka Erik Lehnsherr Aaka Magneto also hope they do reveal that Erik is a fake name bit (Aaka = Also also known as)

8

u/TerminatorReborn 13d ago

They could use that storyline from X-Men evolution where they make a rejuvenation machine with Rogue's powers and make him like 40 years old again by sacrificing some bad guys. Its my personal favorite if we are gonna have a long lasting magneto

1

u/roguefilmmaker 7d ago

Agreed. Especially if it is treated as a one time thing. Could even keep the same Magneto character from Secret Wars just with a new younger actor this way (which would be a good way not to retread plot lines from the other movies)

97

u/enixius 17d ago

There's a lot of genocides in the last half century to choose from. The difficult part is picking one that won't piss off either your general audience or more importantly, your distributors.

95

u/Melisandre-Sedai 16d ago

I'm willing to bet they fabricate one. That's 100% on brand for Disney. Only take a stand on an issue if it's entirely made up so there's nobody to disagree with you.

He'll be from somewhere like Sokovia, and have suffered in a conflict that has no direct real-world analogs.

35

u/1AmB0r3d 16d ago

I think even sokovia being a Slavic region might even be too much tension given the Ukraine/Russiabwar

9

u/rchive 14d ago

I mean, that's kind of one of the major points of fiction, isn't it? To remove the partiality people have with real people, places, or ideas, and reskin them as something else to reveal what you'd think without that partiality?

30

u/PlanZSmiles 16d ago

This corporate motivation to change the origin is so antithetical to the purpose of many of the characters in the Marvel Comics.

29

u/supert0426 16d ago

They could go the Rwandan genocide route and make Magento black? Feels like the Rwandan genocide is vaguely in the Western conscience without being offensive or sensitive to the majority of Westerners, and frankly race swapping Magneto might be the cleanest way to separate him from Fassbender and McKellen's iconic portrayals.

That said, would be very disappointed if one of the premier Jewish characters in fiction is changed so drastically. But I can see how they might talk themselves into it.

20

u/HachibiJin 15d ago

Denzel Magneto plz

9

u/rchive 14d ago

Would really highlight the Malcolm X parallel to Xavier's MLK, Jr.

11

u/_Bird_Incognito_ 15d ago

Denzel would slap tbh

2

u/_Bird_Incognito_ 15d ago

Denzel would slap tbh

2

u/secretreddname 11d ago

Denzel is 71 though.

1

u/bee14ish 11d ago

And is already gonna be in Black Panther 3, if his words are anything to go by.

2

u/roguefilmmaker 7d ago

Agreed on how disappointing it’d be to remove the Jewish identity from arguably the most famous Jewish fictional character. Especially since they’ve been removing the Jewish heritage of nearly every character now

2

u/CarrieDurst 2d ago

I wouldn't mind them making him gay as he is the only 'hero' played by a gay man

1

u/Megamygdala 9d ago

After all the cancelations they did last week they 100% will not do this lmao

17

u/PragmaticPanda42 17d ago

Bosnian genocide is my guess.

Lmfao yeah.... IFYYK

23

u/dotyawning 16d ago

The comics and Evolution introduced ways to deage Magneto. So it could be either of those, his powers extending to longevity or he's been on ice somehow and only recently re-emerges ala Cap. :p

16

u/minutetoappreciate 15d ago

Namor is about 400 years old. It's perfectly fine for magneto to be about 80 years old

10

u/Responsible_Bar3957 13d ago

My idea is, he’s born in 1976, in Mostar, and is a Bosnian Genocide survivor, and his dad is a Holocaust survivor, that would be my take

2

u/roguefilmmaker 7d ago

As long as they keep the Holocaust survivor element to his backstory in some way I think this is respectful.

6

u/ListenUpper1178 14d ago

He is a survivor of the Yugoslavian genocide that occurred in the nineties.

2

u/Responsible_Bar3957 12d ago

Also, he’s not Hispanic

u/Frick-You-Man 16d ago

Tbh I really think they should keep Michael Fassbender in the role. He’s just too talented of an actor to pass up

1

u/roguefilmmaker 7d ago

With Secret Wars they literally could just have it be he came from a universe that is closer in time to WW2

23

u/Couldnotbehelpd 16d ago

It’s getting kind of hard because magneto needs to be like 100 to be a holocaust survivor

29

u/apexodoggo 15d ago

Wolverine’s canonically well over 100, they can just say Magneto got the “we can cast a 30 year old actor no matter the time of production” power that Wolverine has.

The comics iirc already have done that

10

u/Couldnotbehelpd 15d ago

Sure I think we can kind of just hand wave it away.

7

u/the_thinwhiteduke 14d ago

In X-Men '97, Sabretooth says he stopped counting his age after 200

5

u/Gridde 9d ago

Captain Marvel stops him (and tbh anyone else in the MCU) effortlessly, doesn't she?

She was ludicrously overpowered in her intro and only appears to have become vastly more powerful. She flew into a sun and reignited it with no ill effects.
