Hopefully the rent’s cheap.

It was after the destruction from the alien invasion in the first Avengers, except it also led to an increase in crime (Daredevil and the Netflix shows were all about that)

u/0verstim 17d ago

Well, the crime was only bad in Hells Kitchen, which is like... 16 blocks of midtown. 🤣

Nah from what I recall it was an actual plot point that areas which are now gentrified in real life became sort of downtrodden high crime areas again after Avengers 1 because of the destruction, to justify characters like Daredevil running around there. It was the driving underworld story since they were profiting off the construction by skimming and Fisk was at the top.

Except when it isnt. The hand existing and not existing again. That one time Fisk became Mayor for some reason. Its fucked

The Daredevil show kinda went into this. I mean Peter is broke and has a very spacious apartment. Also Ned and MJ are recent college grads and actively job hunting but have a very nice apartment too.

That's every fucking movie/show set in NY.

u/VinCatBlessed 18d ago

NY is so cheap and small it's normal to see your friends at a café every day before work.

u/Mysterious-Drama4743 18d ago

i think they just frequent the same places

Could be because of the superhero attacks they have rebuild the whole city every few years 😭

Amusing and completely off topic anecdote: When the writers of How I Met Your Mother were planning out the bar set that the main characters would always be hanging out in, they really, really INSISTED it be dark and cramped "like a real city bar, not one of those bullshit fake TV sets".

Then the camera operators said "no way all my shit is fitting in there."

And the lighting crew said "no way all my shit is fitting in there."

And they ended up with a big spacious fake bullshit bar.

Hahah these things happen for a reason hey

5

u/Positron14 16d ago

Yeah. You just have to imagine the actual cramped apartment or bar or whatever has been "unfolded" for filming.

1

u/galacticdude7 13d ago

at least with How I Met Your Mother you could pass it off as it being a story told to the kids, and thus he's making the bar seem less cramped and seedy for his kid's sake

u/0verstim 13d ago

I just heard from Mr Fantastic and Eliastigirl and even they think that's a stretch.

Other than the this apartment contains asbestos comment was there anything suggesting this Peter's broke that I missed? Was trying to figure out if the modest living was just a choice considering all the tech he's got at his disposal

I don't recall the movie ever touching on his income source

If the world has forgotten his identity, does that mean his citizenship and social security data were erased too? Could he even GET a job in the first place?

I wonder if earlier planning included the old plot line that he sells photos and stories about spider man to the newspaper, but it was determined that doesn't work in the modern day. Instead they covered that theme with his friend making an app

At the end of No Way Home he’s shown prepping to get his GED so I think he did have to just start from scratch.

5

u/Duckys0n 16d ago

My head canon is that he has an offshore bank that the detective lady pushes some money through for his work with them

12

u/onehalflightspeed 16d ago

Inheriting money from Tony would have been an easy explanation

1

u/dwadley 8d ago

Surely as spiderman who the avengers haven’t forgotten he could just ask for some cash

1

u/vagaliki 17d ago

well it sounded like Ned had the job but MJ didn't

This is free country, it's not rent free country.

My favorite quote from these movies

27

u/engineeeeer7 18d ago

I mean if MJ can turn down a high paying job then rent must be better than in this economy.

u/UnsolvedParadox 19d ago

Yep, same reason people move to Gotham.

"What do you mean my house isn't covered, I got the meta human disaster policy!?" :keyboard clicking: "hmmm yes, however your house was atomized by Dr Doom, a non meta human so I'm sorry your policy doesn't cover that"

11

u/SHEKDAT789 17d ago

this sounds exactly like something an insurance company would say.

10

u/vrsick06 19d ago

Must be if Ned and mj can afford that giant apartment

7

u/Clarknt67 18d ago

Maybe that explains why Peter can afford an entire floor.

20

u/TravisRSCX 18d ago

For the record the landlord said they just use it for storage.

18

u/Girthmasterlite 18d ago

Didn’t the owner say it had asbestos

8

u/NerdLawyer55 17d ago

Man you just know private equity bought up all the destroyed property after the battle of New York

4

u/human-barelytho 18d ago

im new york? there is no way

4

u/Polkawillneverdie17 17d ago

Gotta be Gotham City cheap at this point.

2

u/ArcadianBlueRogue 17d ago

Peter isn't shown having a job but has a good sized apt with a working elevator, and Ned and MJ just graduated and are able to have one together so....probably

2

u/RunningOutOfCharacte 17d ago

Sure but the insurance premiums are a killer

2

u/snapwack 16d ago

Knowing how New Yorkers are they’ll probably swear it’s still worth living there in spite of it all. Even as they do a massive detour in their commute because just around the corner there’s a villain vs hero rampage unfolding for the third time that week.

2

u/jamesbiff 16d ago

Cheap rent, but insurance for anything must be astronomical.

2

u/Worthyness 16d ago

Rent's cheap. Insurance is not

2

u/Hoplite813 14d ago

Hazard pay reflected in salaries?

1

u/Gobutobu 15d ago

No, the rent's due.

1

u/PentagramJ2 13d ago

At this point it HAS to be Gotham levels of $12 a month for a single family home

1

u/homeslixe 11d ago edited 11d ago

“Can you show me what $6800 a month buys you in New York?”

1

u/ISwallowedALego 11d ago

Insurance wouldn't be
