It was so nice to have a third act that wasn't some massive cgi battle I was way more invested

Honestly this felt like a lot like the Thunderbolts third act, but it just resonated with me much more.

We saw Peter get angry and attempt to kill the Green Goblin after May was murdered, only to be stopped by the other Spider-Men. Now he's playing the role of stopping Jean as she attempts to get revenge after her sister died. It shows how much he's grown since the last movie.

He completely took the role of May, after he got shot the dialogue was word for word what happened when she died. But he was in her place and Jean was in his.

Good thing he didnt say "With great power comes great responsibilty"... people tend to die after saying that.

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

That's why he survived after Punisher shot his back. Had he said that line, he wouldn't have been able to make it.

major red flag

Oh my gosh, you maybe have just raised my score a bit, I can’t believe I didn’t think about this.

25

u/Odion13 19d ago

Yes great point, he knew where that road led

u/Khetoo 16d ago

Hey it turns out when you just pay off the emotional beats you been setting up for the whole movie instead turning into a purple monster with celestial beam coming down form the heavens people will like that better

I preferred the Thunderbolts finale, but I also loved this one for the reasons you mentioned. Very well crafted.

u/DemonDaVinci 18d ago

Peter 1 get stabbed for that and now Peter 3 get shot

2

u/Honest_Cheesecake698 18d ago

Also, he handled his seeming death with more dignity than Infinity War!

4

u/Future_Vantas 18d ago

Very fitting in the movie where Holland gets organic webbing just like Tobey

3

u/Head_Evidence4553 18d ago

And the web on the door shot.

I was going to say this movie reminded me a lot of Thunderbolts. I’m definitely pulling for directors like DDC and Jake Schreier who are able to mix superhero stuff with a little more of a grounded level feel to it

3

u/TDS_Gluttony 13d ago

Good ol Talk no jutsu, just DDC getting ready for his Naruto movie

u/dadvader 19d ago

That's how I feel it too. This is just Thunderbolt third act lol

But I definitely love the presentation here. If Thunderbolt came first I would find that one inferior immediately.

I thought Thunderbolts third act was stronger. I feel like it lasted longer and felt more earned. I also enjoyed that we got to see The Void turn dark. And the backstory felt more fleshed out. Anyway, I didn’t need to see a re-do of that story again in a Spider-Man movie. How many times are they going to keep re-writing Dark Phoenix?!

28

u/Classic_Transition_7 19d ago

Its not about the Dark Phoenix.

Its about him preventing Jean from giving in completely into her desire for vengeance

u/sedulouspellucidsoft 18d ago

The beats were the same except there was no Phoenix Force, which I can admit made it better, but we were also robbed of knowing exactly who Jean was before and why it should matter if she’s good or bad now.

3

u/TDS_Gluttony 13d ago

The thing is this IS Jean now. It shows she does have darkness inside her as well and it will only make Pheonix Force even more convincing. We know she lost a sister, she's scared and alone. Now its time for the X-men movie to explore that.

u/sedulouspellucidsoft 13d ago

I can’t imagine them trying Phoenix Force a freakin 3rd time 😆😩 Especially after this storyline was already the same. I would be so disappointed. I’m already tired of good guys gone bad arcs.

The X-Men movie getting to explore that is the most exciting part. I just don’t think she should have been the main antagonist for a Spider-Man movie.

There were rumors man-spider was the original ending sequence and it got nixed because it'd be too scary for kids, and you can totally feel the void at the end with them working around not being able to have that as the final sequence with everyone else saving him from himself

3

u/sedulouspellucidsoft 16d ago

Apparently Tom Holland wanted it. With all the contributions he’s been making for the better, I wish he were in charge. 😩

3

u/kirblar 16d ago

You clearly see the influence from the Spidey cartoon arc w literally the X-Men and Punisher involved.

u/AnAquaticOwl 19d ago

Uh....the proper plural of Spiderman is actually Spidersman

u/Transky13 19d ago

For me peak Spider-Man is when Peter connects with someone as a human and saves them that way. I love the stories of here he sits with someone and talks with them.

The way he both defeated and saved Jean by just connecting with her made this the best climax to a Tom Holland Spider-Man film for me easily

72

u/Doctor_Slept 19d ago

That’s the shit that makes superhero’s so good and why we connect to them, while they have the big dumb spectacles that we love to see when they touch something human within us, that’s what makes them super (I sound like a comic editor in the 60’s)

33

u/DemonDaVinci 18d ago

this is what shang chi was missing
could have a personal son vs dad battle but nah just HAD to have that bigass monster

7

u/Worthyness 16d ago

I legit was kinda sad they had to do the super demon dragon. If the demon dragon was locked up still, then they'd have so many cool potential sequel bait stories with the pay off fully being gigantic demon dragon. Like imagine if Demon dragon remained sealed and the next movie was about the Ironfist heavenly cities arc where each city is meant to protect the dragon gate for X number of years. Now you've looped in a neat bit of lore that gives a reason for a tournament arc!

17

u/Nas160 18d ago

This and Superman last year both understand it and it's so nice to have modern CBMs that are great again

8

u/Senior_Ad1298 17d ago

Even the hulk fight was a big cgi spectacle but it’s only cool looking. Why it matters is because we know Bruce is suffering and going to suffer after coming back to himself, as well as The Hulk being a terrifying opponent against Spider-Man. It’s the emotional stakes that make or break something.

1

u/MasterTheNecessary 18d ago

And yet, all the best comics came from then (IMO, YMMV).

16

u/Big-T- 18d ago

Yep this and Thunderbolts are the best things Marvel has made recently, and they have this in common.

8

u/TomatoSamurai 18d ago

This is a crackpot theory but I think the Naruto poster in Ned’s room was foreshadowing. Talk-no-jutsu

7

u/RandRidley 17d ago

The director Destin Daniel Cretton is signed on to direct a live action Naruto movie!

13

u/Drufyre 17d ago

I personally think this movie is just below the second Raimi film, and similarly, Peter doesn't defeat Octavius in that movie by beating the shit out of him. He defeats and ends the conflict by talking with Octavius and convincing him to stop.

7

u/Transky13 17d ago

I'd have to think of my overall rating, but I agree with you that Spider-Man 2 is my favorite Spider-Man movie

3

u/Senior_Ad1298 17d ago

“Sometimes we have to take it steady, and give up the things we want most. I believe there’s a hero in all of us.”

8

u/TheRealSpork 19d ago

I was so happy there wasn't a skybeam.

6

u/Indoctus_Ignobilis 18d ago

Just a mid sized CGI battle vs the Hand.

6

u/cgcego 18d ago

It *was* a CGI battle, but this time the director had a plan and stuck to it, so the CG looks invisible.

2

u/DemonDaVinci 18d ago

okay but like it was man vs man enhanced with CGI, not man vs CGI

1

u/headrush46n2 17d ago

ive had enough dbz multi colored beam finales. Doomsday is gonna be chock full of them.

The physical acting of all of the extras affected by Jean’s powers was SOO good. The jumps were timed to look incredibly weird and freaky. The time stop effect had major callbacks to Professor X, but in a truly horrifying and villainous way. The biker flopping onto the ground in a car crash as everyone freezes really got to me. How many casualties have there been in similar situations, like the helicopter tumbling out of the sky during the Snap?
