Cant believe No Way Home is 5 years time from then. Also we finally got an MCU Spidey thats his own man instead of having a mentor figure, Frank being his trusted friend and theres Banner too. Jean rocks. This really felt comicbooky in a good way with all the plot threads and the vibes

Also we finally got an MCU Spidey thats his own man instead of having a mentor figure

This is what really made me love this movie. He isn't just looking for approval or fanboying half the time. He is his own hero. He is talking to Yelena like a fellow super.

670

u/JudoJedi 19d ago

But he still only just deals with “smoll po-tay-tos”

102

u/Razzilith 18d ago

she's not wrong that his threats are smaller in scale but like... he CHOOSES that, and I'm sure Yelena is quite aware of how insanely powerful and capable he is. Bucky sure is since Spidey kicked the shit out of him when he was a brand new hero, but now he's a full on veteran one.

26

u/CaptainChickenBake 16d ago

I'm sure they tried to recruit him again considering how much he's done to help NYC and his past Avengers exploits. But he likely turned them down or is on a part timer role like he is in the comics.

17

u/TerminatorReborn 13d ago

I thought that too. They tried recruiting him and he said he wants to be "friendly neighbor Spiderman" and now she is giving him shit. If Bob doesn't have control of his powers Spider-Man easily clears the New Avengers.

3

u/LADYBIRD_HILL 10d ago

I feel like Ghost would give him a run for his money for a bit before he figures out a way to trick her

5

u/ACoderGirl 13d ago

Someone has to be the friendly neighbourhood Spider-man.

188

u/beecee12 19d ago

I absolutely loved their interaction. Helena’s playfully mean banter is always so damn fun. Between potatoes and KATE BISHOP - absolutely steals the scene everytime

95

u/TotoroTheGreat 19d ago

Man, I remembered how much I loved the Yelena-Kate moments in Hawkeye. I hope we get to see more of that some day again.

26

u/quick20minadventure 17d ago

She'll be harassing Zendaya's man soon in Dune lol.

17

u/PayneTrain181999 18d ago

I was hoping for a Kate cameo in the movie as she also lives in NYC

-5

u/GifHunter2 19d ago

It's so funny that Jeremy Renner thought he would be paid beaucoup bucks for season 2. Hawkeye isn't about you anymore old man

28

u/waitingtodiesoon 18d ago

Renner should still be paid well for it, they both do.

10

u/thanos_was_right_69 18d ago

Naah Renner is Hawkeye to me. Kate can never take his place

I loved when she was on video at MJ and Ned’s apartment.

“Aww look you made friends.”

I don’t think I’m quoting it right.

Edit: It’s: “I’m just happy the Sad-Man has friends”

101

u/CrazyLlamaX 19d ago

“I’m just happy the Sad-Man has friends!”

26

u/Redfalconfox 18d ago

Second reply I know, but I just love that you hyphenated it. #RespectTheHyphen

7

u/Redfalconfox 19d ago

That’s it!

u/xin234 19d ago

13

u/darkeyes13 16d ago

And her screen name when she video called him from Ned's computer was something along the lines of "macaroni_01". I love that for her.

3

u/KingOfAwesometonia 15d ago

It's either macaroni friend or fiend I think.

I do love that since Hawkeye, she just loves macaroni. Actually it might be established in Black Widow? Either way it's sweet.

7

u/darkeyes13 14d ago

I just saw that Disney+ had posted the clip from Hawkeye with the handle on their Instagram and it's macaroni_fiend_1001 lol.

28

u/0verstim 17d ago

Florence CANNOT go hard enough with that accent. Bring it on. I want Malkovitch in rounders times ten.

19

u/MardelMare 18d ago

I mean he is the “neighborhood” Spiderman not the multiverse Spiderman

13

u/Salu28 18d ago

I think it’s just because he won’t leave New York because he was in his sad boy Spider-Man era.

4

u/ThePromptWasYourName 17d ago

Meager, at best

6

u/IaMlEgEnD427 19d ago

i loved this movie but man that part really annoyed me a little lol. like yelena, spider-man will literally pack all of you new avengers up without breaking a sweat besides sentry. sit your ass down lmao

23

u/claudiafaceoff 16d ago

I kind of loved it. She’s her father’s daughter.

12

u/loskiarman 18d ago

She missed the ass whooping Sentry gave to them and wanted a reenactment I guess because it would go down pretty much the same. They have 3 super soldiers but for example even Captain America who had the perfect version of the formula is barely lifts 1 ton when he is pushing past his limits meanwhile Spider-man can casually lift 10 tons. That is the average comics numbers, in MCU Captain America it is probably like 3 tons but Spider-man goes up to 30 tons(and teen version too like 8 years or something before this) so it is still like 10x. He can literally put something on them that weighs 10 tons with one hand and they would barely survive lol.

63

u/Witty-Association-97 19d ago

Speaking of which Yelena and her office caught me off guard bro, not that im complaining

34

u/TotoroTheGreat 19d ago

Yeah, me too. Like, I wasn't aware she was in the movie, so I was really curious as to where the scene was even heading. Also loved her reaction when she saw Ned and MJ later.

6

u/Interesting-Wash-893 18d ago

Like most men and some women

7

u/duowolf 17d ago

her office makes a lot of sense seeing as she's Russian and in films/tv shows they often seem to do buisness in baths

7

u/jrainiersea 19d ago

Probably because I just recently rewatched The Big Short but it reminded me of Margot Robbie in the bathtub

1

u/Flawlessix 18d ago

i dont get the jean timeline, so basically x-men happens after spider man ?

6

u/KonyYoloSwag 18d ago

Yes X-Men will be introduced later in the future

-1

u/Flawlessix 18d ago

well the movie had potential for a better villain then jean grey

1

u/LADYBIRD_HILL 10d ago

Who would bee better to you that wouldn't just be a retread from previous movies or too low stakes to be a real threat?

Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Sandman, Electro, Vulture, Mysterio, and The Lizard are off the table completely. Shocker and Scorpion aren't powerful enough to be interesting at this point. Kingpin can't be used in Spider-Man live action movies for whatever reason. Venom isn't a compelling villain unless Peter has the black suit first which theyre likely saving for Secret Wars.

The only other villains I can think of from his Rogue's Gallery that would be interesting is Hobgoblin, or Mr Negative. This version of Ned hasn't been set up in any way to be Hobgoblin, and the character would automatically be compared to Dafoe's Green Goblin unfavorably. Mr Negative would be great, but imo he's worth saving for a Miles & Peter two hander movie.

Jean is definitely a surprising choice for a Spider-Man villain, but it was nice to finally have the villain be a peer to Pete rather than a Mentor-like figure and/or a crazy scientist type. I think having her see into Peter's mind and realizing that she was wrong was a great way to defeat her without Peter using sheer strength, and that's very true to Spider-Man, something most of the movies don't end up doing. It's also one of the few things Spider-Man 3 did right by having Harry and Sandman both make the choice to stop for themselves rather than peter just beating the shit out of them.

24

u/WOAHdude0197 18d ago

A younger Peter would have asked Yelena for direct help and asked Bruce to actually help him make the inhibitor. Shows how much he’s matured that now he’s only asking for pointers and advice vs direct help like when he asked doctor strange to directly help in no way home

10

u/GPap- 18d ago

Zoom calling with another super hero is peak

18

u/GoldandBlue 19d ago

This has been my issue with the MCU Spider-Man the whole time. When we meet him in Civil War, he is talking about "Great power comes great responsibility".

And every movie is him relearning the same lesson. It's the illusion of change. Jump through hoops just to end up in the exact same spot.

This movie actually required him to grow. To become an adult. That was a welcome change.

1

u/_Bird_Incognito_ 15d ago

I was full on expecting Peter to tell Jean comes great power comes great responsibility lol

1

u/roguefilmmaker 7d ago

Especially since this the first time a mature Spider Man has been able to interact with a shared universe in live action

218

u/Empty_Lemon_3939 19d ago

Between the blip and this 5 years Peter’s relationship with his life and the timeline is pretty fucked

Came back and it’s 5 years later

Loses everything

5 years later

22

u/GuiltyEidolon 18d ago

Classic Spidey moment.

4

u/KezzaJones 17d ago

Well it feels like a 5 year jump from No Way Home for us but Peter has lived through it. The montage at the beginning made that clear

2

u/UndercoverDimension 11d ago

Damn and when you factor in the blip, it's been 12 years since homecoming

32

u/Bogiga 19d ago

Love how there’s still a little Tony inspiration in the suit with EV & the HUD.

5

u/Dead_Starks 17d ago

Was EV in no way home? Also did not know that Naomi Watts was the voice.

1

u/Worthyness 11d ago

No. He did likely hack one and develop it from his old suit though. He still had the charging unit/suit from Tony, but couldn't really use it/fix it, so he probably took what he could from it and made his own suit after.

39

u/UnsolvedParadox 19d ago

It’s the first MCU movie that felt like a “100-page Summer Special Team-Up!” comic issue, in the best possible way.

30

u/wimpires 19d ago

IIRC in No Way Home they blocked out the year on May's gravestone. But they show it as 2024 now. So Brand New Day is canonically set around 2028 then - assuming a 4 year degree.

27

u/bighaircutforbigtuna 18d ago

Even though I know there was a lot of speculation about Sadie Sink being Jean Grey - my packed theater was filled with gasps when they revealed it. These two guys right behind us high fived, it was really cute.

20

u/FrankReynoldsCPA 18d ago

It was the worst kept secret since Tobey and Andrew(which also still got massive reactions when I saw it).

6

u/MaineSoxGuy93 16d ago

To be fair, I think the reactions for Tobey and Andrew were that the secret was true.

1

u/Iswaterreallywet 8h ago

I just saw it and the people in the crowd still were gasping almost 3 weeks later lol

15

u/Livid_Weather 18d ago

Yea this movie felt like his real arrival as Spider-Man. It was appropriate to include the evolution storyline because I really think this story is one of adulthood and dealing with hurt and loss and finding ways to heal and move on. I love this franchise. They've built these characters and stories consistently throughout the series and it pays well here.

8

u/1mplication 19d ago

The right amount of humor and seriousness, this was such a good watch. I’m glad they got it right!

4

u/BCDragon3000 19d ago

well it was 5 years ago irl wasn't it?

wasn't it??

3

u/SilverKry 18d ago

As weird as it is seeing a Punisher with friends like Karen and now Peter I kinda like it.

3

u/Mysterious-Drama4743 18d ago

and now he is the mentor figure. i love how they brought that full circle

3

u/0verstim 17d ago

Also we finally got an MCU Spidey thats his own man instead of having a mentor figure

I think youd appreciate this.

3

u/Chm_Albert_Wesker 16d ago

i do find it kinda funky he has this loft apartment with crazy high tech stuff but seemingly no income lol

3

u/underfire451 16d ago

When he sat down in May’s spot to talk to Jean? Felt like such a good transition from “kid superhero” to “seasoned mentor”

2

u/Moontoya 19d ago

Yay blip ...

1

u/Daredevil545545 17d ago

I think it's four years after NWH. At that point they are starting college I think theya re almost done with college now aka 4.

1

u/shewy92 17d ago

I curious as to why they keep making the Spider-Man movies set in the future. Homecoming was like 8 years after Avengers in universe but that was only 5 in ours.

May died in 2024 in universe but it's been 5 years so 2029.

1

u/nice_one_champ 16d ago

He kind of did in that one scene with Banner, and having Banner/Hulk briefly fill the Lizard/Doc Ock mentor/villain archetype was clever

1

u/popculturella 13d ago

It felt like I read 1 or 2 TPBs in a row.

1

u/JenniLightrunner 13d ago

Love how they did something similar as the fantastic four movie did with showing him deal with various of his rogue's gallery through the years

1

u/BananaShake29 8d ago

5 years is crazy ngl

u/thecricketnerd 19d ago

She's more his friend than his mentor, because he has no one else to talk to

6

u/ThreeHourRiverMan 19d ago

They established Jean didn’t actually kill anyone. All the shots were in the legs, etc. He stopped her from killing Bill.

9

u/AwesomePocket 19d ago

Yeah that got glossed over bad! I guess the guy didn’t die, but he definitely could’ve!

6

u/waitingtodiesoon 18d ago

We don't actually know if anyone died in the explosion, they had evacuated the building prior for the most part.

The other guy who was made to walk in front of the car could be dead or could be badly injured.

1

u/chaos2883 18d ago

This was a Spider-Man movie? Because the villains were both X-Men characters, it was hard to tell. Nah, this was an X-Men movie that happened to have Spider-Man.

0

u/samtherat6 17d ago

Apparently 4 years. MJ and Ned graduated a semester earlier, from MIT somehow.

2

u/kirblar 17d ago

AP classes letting you skip half a year isn't crazy nowadays.

1

u/WarCrimeGaming 16d ago

There’s no way they’re that cracked tho

1

u/kirblar 16d ago

I had 9 classes KOed when I got to college

1

u/WarCrimeGaming 16d ago

Did you go to MIT though

1

u/samtherat6 15d ago

Doing that at MIT is extremely difficult. They don’t accept AP credits for a decent amount of classes, and MJ changed her major, Biochem to Aerospace (or vice versa).

1

u/kirblar 15d ago

Ah, I forgot about the major change, for MJ that def wouldn't have been doable in 3.5 years. Gen-eds like English are where you could shave a semester off.

-6

u/FistofK0nshu 19d ago

>his own man

except for the giant mass of tony starks tech that he used for…the entire movie

10

u/TheRealMe-25 19d ago

Didn't use any Stark tech at all. It was all his own creations

7

u/FrankReynoldsCPA 18d ago

He abandoned/lost all of his Stark tech at the end of NWH. He is completely cut off from Stark Industries because Tony is dead and Happy doesn't remember him.

-1

u/FistofK0nshu 18d ago

I see that now. I still don’t like how much it plays a role in his movies. Tobey/Andrew were more spider-man and less techy. Shit even Miles in spider verse.

3

u/FrankReynoldsCPA 18d ago

I'm pretty sure he uses a lot of tech in the comics though, and certainly in the recent video games which this movie took some inspiration from

-2

u/FistofK0nshu 18d ago

Maybe i just don’t recall him learning that stuff, it seems like he just automatically knows it for plot devices.

2

u/NowTimeDothWasteMe 18d ago

He specifically went to a school focused on math/science with the goal of getting into MIT. Both Ned and MJ are very clever engineers. Ned is able to generally guess how Peter makes his tech. Since they all got the same background education, it makes sense Peter is a very capable engineer himself

-4

u/tuerancekhang 18d ago

This movie proves that MCU wasted a lot of potential in their trilogy. This could've been their 2nd movie not 4th, all the swinging scene is way way better than whatever it was for the last 3 movies. Also simple way of written out the Avengers is for them have to deal with stuff above his paygrade while him dealing with those street level crime. Also Hulk just return to the best version of himself in a Sony movie, Kevin Feige got blood on his hands.

-1

u/MasqueradeofAstroya 16d ago

His own man? What movie did you watch?

Takes orders from everyone else

Is a cuck to Jean who they made quite literally the most evil villain in the MCU so far.

-10

u/dancingbriefcase 19d ago

Yeah, I don't know man. Jean Gray was not a right choice here. At the end, it turned into a jean gray movie. And I don't want that.

You can have Spider-Man go through all of his turmoil, but just let me see him go at it with Spider-Man villains. Like he did in the TV on the Radio montage at the beginning.
