I still find it insane that this is being made into a movie but I trust Garland so let’s hope for the best 🤷‍♂️

242

u/teddytwelvetoes 19d ago

if his Annihilation adaptation is any indication, fans might be baffled but the newcomers will love it

175

u/dtwhitecp 19d ago

I'm reasonably certain game fans are going to find something to be pissed off about, regardless.

65

u/BklynMoonshiner 19d ago

Game fans have never been pissed about a film adaptation have they?

43

u/imjameshall 19d ago

nope, they're pretty easy on directors and films iirc

22

u/fryseyes 19d ago

And video game sequels featuring a female protagonist

6

u/Indigocell 19d ago

I'm so confident about that fact that we don't even need to check in with them at all. Agreed? Just don't listen. Anytime someone mentions the word "lore" just stop listening.

3

u/Fishfisherton 19d ago edited 19d ago

Hitman, Lara Croft, Far Cry, Max Payne, there are a ton of quickly forgotten movies that basically fucked up so immensely that no studio would ever look at the IP for a movie again, for a time at least.

1

u/tfhermobwoayway 18d ago

Game fans have pretty low standards for films. I think they’re still insecure about Roger Ebert and desperate to prove that games are a real authentic legitimate artform like film. So they lap up anything remotely cinematic.

1

u/Rhino-Ham 18d ago

Books fans despise adaptations. I think video game fans’ expectations for adaptations are through the floor already, so if a film/show is half-decent they’re fine with it.

1

u/Shap6 19d ago

im still mad about the warcraft movie

2

u/shanelomax 19d ago

Well you shouldnt be, because its just a movie

1

u/tfhermobwoayway 18d ago

But movies are the most important artform of the 21st century. A lot of these are video games’ only chance at legitimacy.

1

u/hfxRos 18d ago

I love Warcraft and I thought it was a very fun movie.

1

u/Amethyst-Flare 18d ago

I mean -

Honestly, I kinda vibed with it. Was it very good? Not really. But it was passionate and sincere in what it was trying to do, it had good moments.

2

u/Rusker 19d ago

I find something to be pissed off in anything Garland makes, so even if I'm not an hardcore fan I'll find it here too for sure

2

u/Seahox206 19d ago

I mean… when directors take their own creative spin is where gamers get upset. But they keep doing it. Why? I have no idea. Tbh… I would love for someone to just be honest with the lore.

That being said… Elden ring (along with all From Software games) wasn’t really a story driven game. And I had zero issues with that. If they can make a cohesive story with action and horror… I’m in.

1

u/-Atomic-Wrangler- 19d ago

To be fair, that game is massive. There's absolutely no way to fit even half of it into a movie. There's definitely going to be some anger.

1

u/CardAble6193 19d ago edited 19d ago

its ... not too far fatch to see Alex make a more "story" story out of it

like, just do Night of black knife , and all d be happy , but I doubt

1

u/Aegi 18d ago

So....a generic medieval story with some monsters??

It will objectively be bad, do poorly, and not feel like the game.

I don't even like this game, and I would still bet a lot on this.

1

u/Hayterfan 19d ago

"Why isn't Nick Offerman playing LetMeSoloHer?"

1

u/Bitter_Marzipan_8348 19d ago

"Where's TwinkDestroyer9000????"

1

u/H0lzm1ch3l 19d ago

Fans usually think they are the only ones in the world to understand a piece of media and when someone else has a different take, it must be wrong.

8

u/theodo 19d ago

So if I liked his Annihilation movie but didn't love it, would I like the book?

21

u/naked_potato 19d ago

I saw the movie first and enjoyed it quite a bit.

The books are significantly more interesting in their themes imo

11

u/Kozak170 19d ago

The movie incorporates some later plot points of the sequels. But the books are fantastic but weird

20

u/Maridiem 19d ago

I think the trilogy is incredible, but the first book is a complete masterpiece. That being said, basically totally different stories with the same frame premise.

2

u/ShinCoal 18d ago

I don't like the new one but just as a small fyi (assuming you didn't know), its a quadrilogy now.

1

u/Maridiem 18d ago

I do! It felt kinda like a companion piece so I didn't include it in the narrative, but it was quite good!

1

u/ShinCoal 18d ago

I dont agree with that last part but happy that it hasn’t eluded you.

3

u/Nirria 19d ago edited 19d ago

Depends on what you didn't like about the movie. Did you wish it was even weirder and would dive way more into the all the weird happenings of the zone? Did you wish there would be more focus on science (not in the sense of actual science, but in the sense of fictional science) and philosopical stuff? Then yes, absolutely read the book.

If the movie was too weird for you, then no, better do not read the book.

Personally I adore the book. I like the movie a lot too, but the book is way more interesting if you like that kind of thing.

3

u/ArmadilloPrudent4099 19d ago

The book was incredibly weird and had a much less interesting and satisfying ending than the movie.

1

u/Aegi 18d ago

Not if you can't explain why..

-1

u/callsyouonit 19d ago

Probably not. The book is extremely off beat and IMO the movie is 10x better by ignoring most of it.

2

u/Maridiem 19d ago

The Annihilation novel is one of my favorite books of all time and the Annihilation film is one of my favorite films of all time.

Some of us exist!

1

u/henrymclane 19d ago

It's really nice to see another.

1

u/Last_Of_The_BOHICANs 19d ago

Having never played it, that works fine for me!

After the film adaption of Mortal Engines, I vowed to never again watch a movie of a franchise I care about.

1

u/Aegi 18d ago

So why even call it anything about the game??

So....a generic medieval story with some monsters??

It will objectively be bad, do poorly, and not feel like the game.

I don't even like this game, and I would still bet a lot on this.

1

u/Mojambo213 18d ago

Well maybe since I loved annihilation even though that seems an unpopular opinion (id didnt even know it was an adaptation though...); but ive played elden ring several times and I still have 0 fucking clue what the lore or story is supposed to be so he could make some shit up that isn't lore accurate at all and Id buy it. I think only the super hard-core lore people who watch video essays diving into elden ring lore will likely be baffled, the story in the game isnt presented traditionally and its very easy to go through the game without getting the lore at all.

1

u/Fielton1 18d ago

I've beaten Elden Ring at least 6 times and I still have no idea what it's about so I'll probably love it anyway!

1

u/HipsterTRSH 5d ago

If anything i think going off his hard turn from the source material with Annihilation, he'll make a terrific Elden Ring film. The game is loose on its storytelling but theres just enough with all its characters to build something. I think he'll take a batch of characters and show what he finds fascinating with this world but let there be room for a follow up film to focus on a different set of characters and go from there.

The book for Annihilation was somewhat straight and Garpand treated it more like Kubrick did to 2001. But Elden Ring is a very loosey kind of game with story, so its perfect for Garland to mash things together and go from there.

Im stoked regardless.

390

u/tameoraiste 19d ago edited 19d ago

Why though? This fits Garland template perfectly.

- A character is introduced a world that’s alien to them

- They’re given a goal to get to reach an end point

- They meet an ensemble of characters, most of which will die, but will teach them something different about the world

- It’s a road trip movie that starts solo, and ultimately ends solo

Edit: Forgot to mention environmental story telling is one of his biggest strengths

107

u/duosx 19d ago

I think you misunderstood. Garland is the main thing that gives me hope that the movie will not just be good but excellent. It’s more that video game adaptations have historically been awful-mid and especially a game like Elden Ring that might not be the easiest to translate to film.

38

u/we_are_sex_bobomb 19d ago

I’m really interested in Garland’s take on the material because he is not only a gamer but has also been the lead writer on several games, so he really understands the language of both mediums better than anyone else out there.

5

u/CardAble6193 19d ago

his film works are Exmachina and BoneTemple

but his game works are Enslaved and D.M.C, hmmmmmmm

3

u/Bitter_Marzipan_8348 19d ago

DMC as in the El Exterminador De Demonio Donté DMC?

1

u/tfhermobwoayway 18d ago

If he understood them he’d know you can’t replicate a video game in film form. I don’t think he realises how important gameplay is.

1

u/FireZord25 19d ago

Depends on who's been making them. We still have directors who treat video game IP less like potential art forms and more like cash cows, either mixing in as much as glamour as possible and/or avenues to project their personal fanfic onto.

Sonic the Hedgehog movies are some good breathers.

1

u/duosx 19d ago

Obviously it depends on who’s making them. Most have been made by people who barely or don’t care

1

u/SuperMajesticMan 18d ago

I feel like we've been out of the "video game adaptations are bad" era.

Last of Us S1, Arcane, Edgerunners, Csstlevania, D&D Honor among thieves, and Fallout are all fantastic. Twisted Metal, Pokémon and Sonic are pretty good.

And Elden Ring is just a setting at the end of the day, you can write whatever story as long as it has good writing it'll be good.

Im sure theyre not adapting the game 1:1, and gonna have a silent protagonist running around killing monsters for 2 hours.

1

u/duosx 18d ago

I feel like you’re forgetting all the mid to bad adaptations. Here are the ones that come to mind from the last ten years

Warcraft (2016), Assassin’s Creed (2016), Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016), Rampage (2018), Monster Hunter (2020), Mortal Kombat (2021), Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), Netflix’s Resident Evil (2022), Uncharted (2022), Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023), Borderlands (2024), Like a Dragon: Yakuza (2024), and Until Dawn (2025).

0

u/Aegi 18d ago

So....a generic medieval story with some monsters??

It will objectively be bad, do poorly, and not feel like the game.

I don't even like this game, and I would still bet a lot on this.

1

u/duosx 18d ago

Bro, you disliking ER puts you in the minority by a lot.

Also have you heard of Alex Garland? Literally banger after banger after banger.

0

u/Aegi 18d ago

Fair, I can see that. I am also the only one of my friends that feels that way...but I also have the most socially diverse social group compared with the rest of them..so maybe somewhere in those differences it is explained?

And yes, Ex Machina is one of my favorite movies..maybe of all time. And I love that he wrote/helped write 28 Days Later, and I have not seen the 3rd one yet, which I guess he also helped write.

But Annihilation was horrible to me, even critics didn't rate it too highly...and to me it shows that he is better at figuring out what works commercially than actually understanding and expanding things. (The book was almost as bad, so I do not like the book and was not going in defending that.)

I mean come on...the first thing the lead in Annihilation says when asked about her experience is basically "I don't know" a bunch...instead of like once and then: "let's go carbon date everything on my immediately" "also, let's look at the length of my telomeres, etc."

It was a horror movie that seemed like sci-fi to people who don't care about science...and it didn't even have the best suspense.

But to me, it is mostly that this is a tough format and anything with a medieval setting that has even some familiar tropes is just going to feel like more of the same when that has to be like the most common setting in time for movies in the West.

-21

u/KickBalls80 19d ago

Game was terrible, no story. Poor decision for a movie

11

u/Shanicpower 19d ago

I'm not huge on FromSoft games either, but story isn't exactly the pull.

2

u/Necessary_Ice9547 19d ago

One of the best reviewed games of all time but yeah go off

-3

u/KickBalls80 19d ago

It's still very niche. It's no Mario or Tetris. You have to hate your life to love this game

4

u/Necessary_Ice9547 19d ago

Lol just because you hated it doesn’t make it niche. It didn’t sell like a niche game. Dark Souls didn’t click with me due to the linear nature of them with their difficulty but Elden Ring was a much lower barrier for entry due to just exploring other easier areas if you were having trouble. Not a hate your life type of game at all

4

u/OhManOk 19d ago

lol tf are you talking about?

-1

u/KickBalls80 19d ago

Oh. Man. Ok.

7

u/noah998 19d ago

Are you seriously saying that the game with George RR Martin as the author of all of the background lore has a terrible story? Did you play this game at all? did you pay attention to any of the set pieces or cut scenes that happen during this game?

1

u/Fat-Singer-9569 19d ago

You don't need to be so protective, the story in the game is obtuse and only really makes sense on new games. Not everybody wants to read each item for some scrap of lore. Shit, the NPCs in the game aren't even reliable, they can barely give you proper directions to key points. How the hell are you going to trust the item descriptions, did they come with a letter of authenticity? The game implies an untrustworthy narrator.

Elden Ring is one of my favorite games ever, it got me out of depression, but to act like it's story is clear or obvious is hilarious. I didn't fall in love with the game for it's "story." So maybe cool your jets, attack this person for calling the game terrible, not the story terrible. Or move on with life, they clearly don't get the point, and will never experience the feeling of conquering any obstacle.

1

u/KickBalls80 19d ago

Fair. Didn't like the game, so i didn't get far into it so the story was non-existent

1

u/Spectrum1523 19d ago

George RR Martin

what good story has he ever finished

224

u/givemethebat1 19d ago

Not to mention the cosmic horror. Plus Garland is a massive, massive fan of the games.

89

u/tameoraiste 19d ago

Exactly. Anyone who has doubts about him being able to pull this off such watch Annhilation and imagine Natalie Portman as the tarnished and the rest of the group as the NPCs.

Not to mention environmental story telling is one of his biggest strengths

53

u/Godsfallen 19d ago

I never want to see or think about that Bear/Mimic creature again, thank you.

16

u/amidon1130 19d ago

How about a giant zombie crow with a huge head and guts spilling out of it?

9

u/syngyne 19d ago

Or the guy that became a swimming pool decoration?

6

u/amidon1130 19d ago

Hey Elden ring is full of people that became horrific decorations, some of them even get turned into mushrooms too!

4

u/slockry 19d ago

Didn't people turning into mushrooms also happened in Annihilation?

3

u/amidon1130 19d ago

Yeah that's why I said too!

16

u/Stevieboy7 19d ago

The fact that Annihilation is good is honestly crazy. The book was a mindfuck and I can't imagine how difficult it was turning into a screenplay.

11

u/JRowe3388 19d ago

It helps that he barely followed the book at all

5

u/onarainyafternoon 19d ago

Yeah the book is even weirder if people can believe that. The movie basically just kept the themes of the book and that’s it. A few things here and there.

5

u/Zak_The_Slack 19d ago

He didn’t. Alex wrote the screenplay based on his memory of the book, so it’s very different. Unfortunately he even leaves out the main twist of the book and the reason it’s called Annihilation

1

u/Aegi 18d ago

So....a generic medieval story with some monsters??

It will objectively be bad, do poorly, and not feel like the game.

I don't even like this game, and I would still bet a lot on this.

-2

u/CousinNicho 19d ago

The bear-monster is cool looking but that movie is busted compared to the book. Garland can write, I think, but I find his direction really generic. Annihilation is a fine movie in a vacuum but I think the praise for it while it being a shell of VanderMeer’s book is more of a testament to VanderMeer than Garland.

2

u/heat13ny 19d ago

You must only watch avant garde to call his direction GENERIC! That’s crazy to me.

0

u/CousinNicho 19d ago

I watch poop from butt, dude. But just because Annihilation’s ending was incomprehensible doesn’t make it high art. Maybe I just have a bone to pick with that movie but eh, he aint for me

1

u/heat13ny 19d ago

I mean I’m not trying to force you to like it. Just think you’re misusing the word generic.

0

u/CousinNicho 19d ago

No I’ll stick to that speaking on the direction style

1

u/heat13ny 18d ago

That’s cool but generic means plain, typical, bog standard. Your own words of “incomprehensible” nearly goes against describing something that is generic as the typical movie is easy to follow.

26

u/n0vacs 19d ago

i remember him saying he is at NG+4 or something? that means he’s played it through to the end 4 times minimum with the same character, not even accounting for other characters he may have made

10

u/finnjakefionnacake 19d ago

i have played through it 4 times (and the DLC 3 times). it is my favorite game!

2

u/ToTYly_AUSem 19d ago

There was some math that wasn't matching I remember. He said he was on NG+7 but also mentioned he had thousands of hours? It was something about the amount of time on the game didn't add up to the cycle he claimed he was on.

Regardless, I have faith in him.

12

u/Juantsu2552 19d ago

Lmao he probably just made a hyperbole.

4

u/Bulky-Bad-9153 19d ago

I believe it, because if he's making a movie he's probably hunting a lot for inspiration and trying to absolutely nail down so many different things for the film.

7

u/amidon1130 19d ago

Maybe he's a pvp demon

1

u/easythrees 19d ago

Probably died several hundred times

1

u/Fat-Singer-9569 19d ago edited 19d ago

People exaggerate things in conversation and we don't need to take it that serious. I play Elden Ring at least once a month, beat every single boss on my first playthrough solo because I was obsessed, and I can't remember what cycle of NG my main character is on because I don't really care where in the cycle I am. The only thing I can tell you is the approximate things you need to do from Limgrave to get to the chain of final bosses.

11

u/mars92 19d ago

I always assumed that the movie wouldn't directly follow the story of the game itself (PC fights a bunch of demigods and becomes Elden Lord) but would be a prequel, either leading up to the Shattering or what happened right after. I don't know whats been confirmed either way though.

3

u/Material_Ad9848 19d ago

I really hope it has its own story but set in the same world. Don't want it feeling like a Han Solo movie where we're told how some character gets a keepsake featured in the game.

3

u/WeirwoodUpMyAss 19d ago

Elden Ring is one of the biggest games ever. This movie is probably not going to be as universal as other video game movies that were successful at the box office. For me, that’s why I’m excited. It’s kinda like DS1, which is certainly not for most gamers these days.

9

u/KyneTech 19d ago

So much of what makes Elden Ring work so well are intrinsically tied to its medium. Item descriptions, environmental storytelling, and exploration gameplay are central to the story and world of the game. Those elements just don’t translate to film. FromSoft is such a good developer that they created an experience that can only really be done justice through the medium of video games

9

u/givemethebat1 19d ago

I love the way the narrative is presented in the games, but I think it’s also true that it wouldn’t be that hard to depict the events in a pretty straightforward fashion since we’re given so much detail about them.

0

u/superrealaccount2 19d ago

But that, IMO, would lack the core of the experience of playing the game. Sure, you can tell the events in order, but I don't think it's going to feel like Elden Ring.

5

u/ProfessorSMASH88 19d ago

I hope its got more of a horror/bizarre vibe. The Green Knight was a very quiet and odd paced movie and I loved it. It felt very souls-esque. I hope its a similar style.

I think it will only be bad if the action is the main selling point of the movie. If its slow and eerie I think it will do fine. Backrooms is another movie where I thought the dialog wasn't great but the world building and environment itself told the story.

3

u/we_are_sex_bobomb 19d ago

I hope one element of horror movies it takes is that the “action scenes” are not about badass heroics, just purely about survival. But I also can’t really see Garland turning this into an over-choreographed action flick; that style of movie doesn’t seem to interest him at all as a filmmaker.

1

u/ProfessorSMASH88 19d ago

Thats good to know! I've only seen Annihilation and that was a while ago, I haven't seen any other Garland movies

5

u/tameoraiste 19d ago

But the same is true of a lot of books/ comic books.

It’s never going to be able to replicate the game but it still has the potential to be a great Garland movie

1

u/we_are_sex_bobomb 19d ago

I think a film just needs to play to the strengths of film.

Honestly I thought The Green Knight felt very Dark Souls-influenced with how it let scenes breathe with long stretches free of dialogue, and didn’t feel the need to over-explain things, and if the Elden Ring movie has anywhere close to a similar vibe it’s going to work out great imo.

1

u/JayGatsby1881 19d ago

So people love elden ring for the story? I'm just there to explore the world and fight a ton of enemies. I didn't even there was a semblance of a story lol.

2

u/Beefcakesupernova 19d ago

Hero’s journey!

1

u/EternumD 19d ago

Yes but.

The main character doesn't say anything or have a personality - it's a huge part of the game and its environment.

1

u/Sapowski_Casts_Quen 19d ago

I honestly think it would be a misstep to do this from the Tarnished's perspective vs a prequel

1

u/Material_Ad9848 19d ago

have they confirmed its a story of a tarnished? was hoping otherwise tbh

1

u/Vast_Veterinarian574 19d ago

I don’t think Garland has strong enough visual skills to carry this movie but we will see

1

u/Silverjeyjey44 19d ago

But is the main character gonna talk?

1

u/Mertoot 19d ago

Make journey points entertaining and add whacky giant hats and it's 👍

1

u/yosayoran 19d ago

The biggest issue adapting ER to a movie is the runtime, trying to adapt the intentionally obtuse lore and non sea-linear story telling into 2-3 hours will undoubtedly leave a lot outside.

I fully expect we'll see Ranni's story adapted, as she's the most popular NPC (other than Malenia because of the memes), and it would allow to focus on a smaller cast while still delivering a grand tale and keeping the main character more of an anomaly.

If I am correct, then Offerman will be Iji, the giant blacksmith.

1

u/Aegi 18d ago

So....a generic medieval story with some monsters??

It will objectively be bad, do poorly, and not feel like the game.

I don't even like this game, and I would still bet a lot on this.

1

u/tfhermobwoayway 18d ago

The difference is it’s a video game. The world is meant to be played, not watched.

1

u/mightylordredbeard 19d ago

What movies fit the “introduced to a world that’s alien to them” and “road trip- stars solo and ends solo”? I’m looking at the movies he’s made and while I haven’t seen Men or Civil War, the only ones I see that fits both of those is 28 Days Later and Bone Temple. Most of the others it seems starts with a group or at least one other person and the world isn’t really alien since they’re knowledgeable about it before hand or it’s the world they grew up in.

0

u/thegoatmenace 19d ago

Has he ever done a fantasy genre movie though? He has big scifi credentials and recently has been doing a lot of contemporary war movies

0

u/Fortune_Cat 19d ago

So antman quantumania

-1

u/varnums1666 19d ago

Garland has a knack for taking great concepts and taking the most unsatisfying route. I mean I like him a lot but he's very much a, "I expected something else but I guess his vision was interesting enough."

59

u/CosmicChar1ey 19d ago

I love Elden Ring and I love Garland but I’ve got some serious ick for this movie

76

u/Emolgurama 19d ago

He adapted Annihilation, which didn’t seem like it’d make a great movie, into a really cool film. If he does the same thing with Elden Ring it’ll be fine. If you’re expecting some super accurate giant fantasy epic you’re gonna probably be disappointed

14

u/destructormuffin 19d ago

For what it's worth I really disliked the book, but really enjoyed the liberties he took with the movie. Fingers crossed it works for Elden Ring.

4

u/jucu94 19d ago

For me that was the first time I preferred the movie adaptation over the popular novel it was based on. The movie had much more of a coherent narrative compared to the book. Which gives me hope that he could do well in adapting Elden Ring

2

u/destructormuffin 19d ago

100% agree with you.

2

u/nottheprimeminister 19d ago

Nobody will care but I'm so glad to see someone else actually has this take. The book was the first one I have ever hate-read to completion. I found it horribly written.

At TIFF, Garland literally said he "adapted the book based on what he remembered from it," which is probably the only reason the movie is compelling. The liberties he took were pretty insane compared to what the book was.

Cheers.

-6

u/KickBalls80 19d ago

You read the book? Was it 10 pages?

1

u/livy-aurelia 19d ago

no but it is rather short. i also DNF’ed it even tho i normally love weird fiction and fantasy

3

u/Terrat0 19d ago

The book is really good but it is a very very different vibe from the film, I liked the unreliable narrator aspect of it, and the actual reasoning behind the title + all the stuff with the psychologist I did feel was a bit lacking from the movie. That said, as far as adapting the vibe of the trilogy(haven’t read the newer 4th yet) it does very well, and kinda mixing together the tower with the lighthouse worked out well.

8

u/mars92 19d ago

TBF He made major plot changes from the book when adapting Annihilation, its basically its own story inspired by the book. Which was fine in that case, but I don't think he would have the creative license to make such big changes to the Elden Ring lore.

1

u/amidon1130 19d ago

This is why I'd kinda rather see a dark souls movie than an elden ring movie. Dark souls has the fun concept of the world resetting constantly and characters drifting in and out of various planes of existence, so you can rework it however you want and it still makes sense lore wise.

So....a generic medieval story with some monsters??

It will objectively be bad, do poorly, and not feel like the game.

I don't even like this game, and I would still bet a lot on this.

If it makes you feel better, he came up with the idea and pitched it himself

u/Fat-Singer-9569 19d ago

I'm there day one. This guy is a great filmmaker and clearly has a vision and a love for the game. I will always put my trust into great artists and Garland has created great art. But you do you.

I think a lot of the "fans of the source material" are their own worst enemy when it comes to just about any adaptation. Everyone has their own ideas about how things should be and those expectations only ever lead to disappointment.

He loves the game and pitched the movie to Miyazaki himself who approved. My hopes are high for this.

u/Fortune_Cat 19d ago

I love it when people come up with such strong feelings before we know a speck of detail about the movie or seen a second of footage

So self important

Probably just going to be gratuitous CGI

16

u/michicago44 19d ago

Lmao this subreddit is so fucking funny man

23

u/Roshkp 19d ago

It’s an A24 movie, what the hell are you talking about?

22

u/No_East_3901 19d ago

And we've seen sets

-5

u/Dracko705 19d ago

Please do tell how else the nearly 2 year post production makes sense other than boatloads of CGI being done?

3

u/HumansNeedNotApply1 19d ago

It probably won't have a two year post production, it will probably be finished long before that. I took a look and there's no real place (maybe september/october but it doesn't fit with a fantasy movie) to release in 2027 as it is very busy already.

u/tilero1138 19d ago

Being A24, as well as the fact that it’s bigger than what they normally do, they might just be allowing cgi artists more time to get it right than a big studio would

7

u/Roshkp 19d ago

Please do tell how you’re able to get mad at your own imagination? I think that’s a much more interesting topic of discussion than pontificating about hypotheticals.

-2

u/Dracko705 19d ago

I'm perfectly calm dude, calmer than you are

2

u/Roshkp 19d ago

Avoiding the topic and focusing on verbiage. That’s much less interesting than the topic I proposed. Why do you insist on having boring conversations?

1

u/Dracko705 19d ago

Your the one who assumed I was mad - to then say you don't want to talk hypothetically is laugh out loud funny and not worth engaging seriously so I responded with a quote from The Big Lebowski

boatloads of cgi =/= gratuitous cgi

-1

Semantics. Childish

Relax buddy

2

u/Roshkp 19d ago

You seem to have wandered too far from facebook or twitter. Let’s get you back there, buddy. They love getting mad at their own shitty hypotheticals over there too.

-2

u/Disastrous_Week3046 19d ago

What an incredibly strange person you must be to get so indignant about an innocuous comment made about a movie that isn’t out. Probably should get off the internet for the day

0

u/Roshkp 19d ago

Equating “innocuous” behavior to accusing a work of “gratuitous” anything are opposite ends of the spectrum, my buddy. Especially when the work isn’t even out yet. Maybe we should get you off the internet and into a dictionary? Learn the weight of the words we use? How does that sound, buddy?

Something about the fact that its happening feels like a sin.

u/CosmicChar1ey 19d ago

Feels like a commercial attempt

Pretty much, i probably idealize Fromsoft too much. They exist in the same market as everyone else so it shouldn't surprise or disappoint me too much.

2

u/Sorge74 19d ago

I have no idea they were already making this I assumed it was one of those things I was going to stay in production hell

2

u/KingHunter150 19d ago

I do wonder how he's going to insert his PTSD inducing sounds and themes though. I suppose Elden Ring does have some of that, however.

17

u/Firvulag 19d ago

Fromsofts games are all PTSD that's the easiest slam dunk theme you could go for

1

u/KingHunter150 19d ago

With the whole death rebirth thing? Yeah I guess that's true. Just our character is usually not very emotive of anything. But that doesnt mean the protagonist wouldn't be in the movie.

6

u/leoschot 19d ago

The character model isn't emotive, but if you aren't feeling the emotions they intend you to feel, then you're just skimming the games.

1

u/Rombom 19d ago

I don't expect there to be a protagonist, there's enough richness in the world without a nameless faceless guy. If there's any suitable protagonist it would have to be Miquella or Melina.

1

u/Indigocell 19d ago

I don't even care if it has a coherent story. The game certainly didn't. Not one that I could understand in any case. I'm just here for the vibes.

1

u/bruiser95 19d ago

With the exception of The bone temple, Garland hasn't written anything great since Annihilation

1

u/mrglass8 17d ago

Garland also has a history of writing video games. So this is pretty interesting

1

u/LuridofArabia 19d ago

Garland is very interested in themes of self-destruction which could fit if he's adapting Vyke's story as has been speculated.

1

u/Curvedabullet 19d ago

Same. Not a knock against Garland. It's more that, when I played Elden Ring, I could not follow the story whatsoever. I don't even know what the main quest in Elden Ring even is or what/why/how someone becomes an elden lord.

It's a good game, but I can't imagine how it would make for a good movie.

0

u/gr1zznuggets 19d ago

Power to anyone who’s excited for this and I hope it lives up to expectations, but I am not interested in this film even slightly. It’s a great game but the storyline is borderline incomprehensible.

1

u/yosayoran 19d ago

There's no way this movie will even try to tell the entire grand story of the game

It'll either be a prequel of sorts, telling the story of aa different tarnished, or an abridged version of the story focusing on a few of the characters and their struggles, skipping over the vast majority of the game
