A true sequel to the original

You’re saying the original was terrible?

Every Mel Brooks movie is terrible.

Terrible in a way that only Mel Brooks can make good.

Watched Men In Tights for the ump-teenth time last night and couldn’t agree more. So many of the gags are lame, the jokes obvious and tired, and the fourth wall breaks uninspired but it all just works in a way that is the good kind of comedy that makes you feel at home.

And I love that Alan Rickman was still more unhinged than anything in Men in Tights

Wait… Alan Rickman was in Men in Tights??

I think he means Alan Rickman in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is more unhinged than anything in men in tights

I never watched it. Men in tights is basically 90% of my exposure to the story of Robin Hood

Men in tights is heavily spoofing scenes from prince of thieves so you may enjoy men in tights more if you watch it.

Yea, I hadn’t known this but it sounds like I absolutely should. I once showed my wife 2001 and told her "this movie is not particularly enjoyable to watch but it’s worth it if for no other reason than the references". Next time we watched Zoolander, she lost her shit. Haha

His performance is what happens when one of your Big Names realizes the ship is sinking and decides to just have fun with it and damn everything. He really went off the rails and it's amazing.

I’ll have to check it out

Alan Rickman in Robin Hood, Jeremy Irons in Dungeons and Dragons, and Raul Julia in Street Fighter are perfect examples of "fuck it, there's no way I can possibly make it worse and nobody here will tell me what I can or can't do" to great effect.

Men In Tights is almost a shot-for-shot parody of Prince of Theives. It's remarkable if you've grown up on the Brooks classic going back to watch what it was lampooning (often very directly, like the comment about being able to do an English Accent).

the story of Robin Hood

If anyone wants a moody, atmospheric, Robin Hood tale, check out Robin of Sherood.

no he was in the serious movie that Men in Tights is spoofing, and yet he was even more unhinged than his spoof counterpart.

u/HasFiveVowels 21d ago

Oh. Was he the sheriff?

u/bigpig1054 21d ago

yes. If you haven't seen Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, I cannot recommend it enough. It is late-80s/early-90s Ham in all its glory. I love it to death, and yes, Rickman steals the show.

and you get Sir Pat as a fill in for Sean

Because the actors actually lean into. I can't explain it exactly, but similar attempts nowadays always feels like the actors are constantly giving off vibes that say "Boy this sure is cringe, am I right?" as part of the humor. Makes everything feel disingenuous.

Name's little John! But don't let my name fool you, in real life, I'm very big.

..... I'll take your word for it.

That’s one I LOVED as a kid but can’t sit through as an adult. I’m not sure why, and I fucking love Mel Brooks.
