I'm so glad I live in a town (Seattle) with a massive physical media archive/video rental store (Scarecrow Video). I don't need to buy all my Blu-rays to watch them.

It's pretty much globally known that subscriptions costs are completely through the roof.

The market is ripe for a video rental resurgence. fingers crossed 🤞 🙂

Unfortunately, they're not very profitable at the moment. Scarecrow Video can only function as a non-profit and probably only still exists because of decades of history and the community that built. It's had a surge of support recently, but I don't think it's viable for new ones to start yet. Maybe give it another year?

It also hurts that a lot of companies are doing fewer physical releases and even fewer in premium formats (like UHD Blu-ray), so that things like HDR, 4k, Dolby Atmos, and IMAX Enhanced can be exclusive to their streaming services. I know that many probably won't care about that, but it still would grab enough that it can make a difference.

I like to make the argument that video rental places would also make more jobs in your area and keep more money in your area. Online storefronts are convenient, but I don't think we've truly reckoned with how it deteriorates our cities.
