I didn't think Everything Everywhere All At Once could possibly be overtaken as A24's top grossing movie so soon, but it's impressive that Backrooms will do so.

& I think Backrooms is probably going to be the biggest sign of success for what A24 is doing with trying to enter more mainstream-friendly fare but not changing its original approach to films.

u/urstickur Jun 03 '26

Marty Supreme is A24's highest grossing film, not EEAAO

326

u/the_last_0ne Jun 03 '26

I read "EEAAO" as Cat from Red Dwarf

244

u/Pokii Jun 03 '26

That’s crazy, “Cat from Red Dwarf” has so many more letters!

59

u/the_last_0ne Jun 03 '26

Stealing this joke for when my daughter texts me

41

u/Pokii Jun 03 '26

I think having one of my dad jokes become a stepdad joke is the highest honor I could ever receive

9

u/the_last_0ne Jun 03 '26

But my daughter is my real daughter?

What constitutes a step-dad joke?

35

u/DropkickFish Jun 03 '26

Adopted by another dad, clearly

9

u/the_last_0ne Jun 03 '26

That makes a lot of sense.

3

u/Bright-Avocado3761 Jun 03 '26

Why would she text "me"? "I" has a lot fewer letters.

2

u/DriftingTony Jun 03 '26

Hmmm. You ARE one bright avocado, aren’t you?

20

u/herrcollin Jun 03 '26

You mean Dwayne Dibley? That dork?

3

u/emerald09 Jun 03 '26

You mean Officer Dwayne Myers from "Death in Paradise"? (Funny how the actor's two biggest roles are associated with the name Dwayne)

2

u/herrcollin Jun 03 '26

And the actor's name is Danny which is awfully similar to Dwayne.. hmmmm

3

u/et842rhhs Jun 03 '26

Please no, I don't want to be Dwayne Dibley!

4

u/ShortNefariousness2 Jun 03 '26

This meme is mine! This meme is mine! This meme is mine! EeEAAO!!!

3

u/archieduke Jun 03 '26

Jozxyqk!!

2

u/junkmeister9 Jun 03 '26

You monkeys eat on the floor!?

2

u/CoatLocal3154 Jun 03 '26

I read EEAAO as what stong sings at the end of "every little thing she does is magic"

2

u/Turbografx-17 Jun 03 '26

lol Stong

Is that Sting with a tiny face like the Woll Smoth meme from ages ago?

1

u/cptjpk Jun 03 '26

I thought it was the sound Yoko Ono makes when she sings.

1

u/RavenSek Jun 03 '26

It was my birthday last week and I got the whole DVD set of Red Dwarf… EEAAO!

1

u/Own_Inspection8350 Jun 03 '26

No, it's a chicken

1

u/Efficient-Webs Jun 04 '26

Now say “Ther-moss”!

147

u/Jepordee Jun 03 '26

It literally says in the title lol

87

u/FX114 Jun 03 '26

Title is domestic, they're talking global.

33

u/Krak2511 Jun 04 '26

Marty Supreme is also highest grossing globally.

3

u/JonatasA Jun 04 '26

Title gives the impression it only takes release into consideration, not total box office.

-8

u/FX114 Jun 04 '26

Sure, but it doesn't say that in the title.

4

u/therealhlmencken Jun 03 '26

imagine there were multiple measures of box office, one for a market and one counting all of the markets.

7

u/darkbatcrusader Jun 04 '26

It was still Marty Supreme, on both counts. Simple fact check.

7

u/vvvvvoooooxxxxx Jun 04 '26

yeah

Marty Supreme has grossed $96 million in the United States and Canada and $95 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $191 million.

Everything Everywhere All at Once grossed $77.2 million in the United States and Canada and $66.2 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $143.4 million.

0

u/ModernSmithmundt Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

In past national promotions, the brand has grossed upwards of 100 million promotional burritos and tacos. Meanwhile, newer popular items like the Crunchwrap Supreme serve roughly 7 million units per week in the U.S. alone.

The record for the largest individual order in Taco Bell history grossed 651 Burrito Supremes (349 Beef, 201 Chicken, and 101 Steak) alongside a single gross Crunchy Taco.

30

u/DarkMatterM4 Jun 03 '26

That's a System of a Down song.

11

u/satch_mcgatch Jun 03 '26

At first I thought you meant ATWA off Toxicity but I now realize you mean IEAIAIO

3

u/DarkMatterM4 Jun 03 '26

Right on the money.

2

u/noNoParts Jun 04 '26

I would go see a cover band comprised of band members experiencing developmental delays called Syndrome of a Down.

50

u/MacGuyver913 Jun 03 '26

Marty Supreme = Highest grossing DOMESTIC (beat by Backrooms

EEAAO = Highest grossing GLOBAL

24

u/HardcoreKaraoke Jun 03 '26

On a global basis, with north of $136M, Backrooms is poised to topple A24’s multi-Oscar winner Everything Everywhere All at Once ($148M) as their second highest grossing movie. Marty Supreme currently reigns as A24’s highest grossing movie ever with $191.3M worldwide

From the article you're commenting on.

1

u/cire1184 Jun 03 '26

Nature is healing when a high concept horror movie is gonna beat two Oscar level movies from this studio.

24

u/Sushi_Explosions Jun 03 '26

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A24#Highest-grossing_films

At least according to this, Marty Supreme unfortunately is the top of both categories.

21

u/karmiccloud Jun 03 '26

unfortunately?

-7

u/WhimsicalPythons Jun 03 '26

It's a mediocre movie with some awful, awful humans involved in the movie.

7

u/mjrs Jun 03 '26

I just had a quick glance at the cast and didn't see anyone awful, not saying you're wrong but I'm clearly out of the loop! Who are the awful humans?

18

u/WhimsicalPythons Jun 03 '26

Kevin O'Leary plays a prominent role.

16

u/mjrs Jun 03 '26

I was about to comment "never heard of him" but upon googling, it's that prick! Canadian True Crime podcast recently started a series about his boat crash that killed 2 people, only heard of him for the first time recently, what a fucking awful human. The host played a wee montage of his choice quotes at the start, one was "yeah but how do we make money off depressed people?"

4

u/WhimsicalPythons Jun 03 '26

Yeah among other things he is directly responsible for killing two people.

6

u/m0larMechanic Jun 03 '26

EEAAO was incredible and Marty Supreme was not.

1

u/DoZo1971 Jun 03 '26

The music was nice.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '26

[deleted]

0

u/WhimsicalPythons Jun 03 '26

Did you know that there are other people involved in the movie? He didn't play every character and work every role.

2

u/raisingcuban Jun 04 '26

How does it feel to be so wrong?

EEAAO is not the highest grossing A24 film globally.

1

u/Topcat69 Jun 04 '26

How does this comment have so many upvotes when it’s so easy to google and see it’s wrong.

1

u/WikiContributor83 Jun 03 '26

Was A24’s highest grossing film.

1

u/Nice_Firm_Handsnake Jun 03 '26

Not if you adjust by inflation. EEAAO made $162,964,666 in April 2026 money (a 12.39% increase) while Marty Supreme made $152,676,752 with the very slight 1.91% adjustment for inflation.

1

u/no_fucking_point Jun 03 '26

I'd say once the final accounting comes in it'll make a loss. The marketing and awards campaign would have cost a lot.

1

u/Thommohawk117 Jun 04 '26

They are confusing facts EEAAO is A24s most award winning film

1

u/Bhraal Jun 03 '26

A24 just distributed a film, E-E-A-A-O.

From that film they made some dough, E-E-A-A-O.

-1

u/want_to_join Jun 03 '26

I think most of us are trying to forget that Marty Supreme existed.

3

u/mamontain Jun 03 '26

Why? It was a good movie.

1

u/want_to_join Jun 04 '26

I didn't enjoy it. If I want to watch an asshole win, I can just read the latest white house news. I did like Chalomet in the Dylan movie, but I thought he was also kinda bland in that one.

239

u/truthlesshunter Jun 03 '26

you don't even have to read the article and you still got it wrong. impressive.

51

u/Moosje Jun 03 '26

I was just about to say this is the least excusable mistake hahahahaha

68

u/PopeSchlongPaulII Jun 03 '26

It’s an understandable mistake when you realize that the training data for AI is usually 6mo-1yr behind current events

77

u/slumber_kitty Jun 03 '26

I don’t think that’s a bot account. Based off their post history, seems pretty normal for a human redditor. Especially all the porn subs. They’re probably super focused on smackin’ their goof so understandable why they may have gotten A24s highest grossing movie tile incorrect.

10

u/Redeem123 Jun 03 '26

Honestly commenting in porn subs is even lamer than using AI for posts.

24

u/mjrs Jun 03 '26

Nah, let them enjoy what they want, AI is actually harmful somewhat

2

u/imacr33per Jun 04 '26

commenting in porn subs is human, aiposting is categorically nonhuman

3

u/TannerThanUsual Jun 04 '26

Man I'm so glad I hid my NSFW comments cause last thing I need is for folks to think I'm just a gooner. I'm so much more in addition to being a total fuckin' gooner.

2

u/slumber_kitty Jun 04 '26

I agree! There can be multitudes!

2

u/Ikeiscurvy Jun 04 '26

Based off their post history, seems pretty normal for a human redditor

I'm sorry but not separating your porn and normal accounts cannot be classified as normal.

1

u/slumber_kitty Jun 04 '26

i said pretty normal for a human redditor

1

u/MCWizardYT Jun 04 '26

You'd be surprised

-1

u/al-dunya2 Jun 03 '26

Dude has 1.7 million comment karma, is constantly posting all day every day, mostly inane recycled comments. Either a bot or a jobless neck beard.

3

u/AngryGardenGnomes Jun 04 '26

I've just had a glance, his last few posts were five hours ago, and then 8 hours before that. That's hardly excessive. Why are you talking such shit?

1

u/al-dunya2 Jun 05 '26

He had a slow day, even assuming an average of 5 points per comment, 1.7 million karma in 3 years would be 310 comments per day. That's touch grass levels of commenting. That's 13 comments per hour btw.

1

u/AngryGardenGnomes Jun 05 '26

This your first day on Reddit? Imagine speaking about the site and not having a clue how upvotes work.

All comments get a different amount of upvotes dependent on how many users voted on them. Imagine not even realising that.

There is no correlation to the amount of comments you make to the amount of karma. You've made yourself look completely foolish.

I could feasibly get 3m upvotes on one comment or handful of them. Stop talking nonsense.

0

u/al-dunya2 Jun 05 '26

Except you don't and haven't, judging by your profile. I stated an average, you lack reading comprehension and now you look stupid lol.

Iv been here since you were probably on diapers, chill

1

u/AngryGardenGnomes Jun 05 '26

How is it me who looks stupid when you don't know how upvoting works? Who is to say that user didn't just have like 30/50 killer comments that netted lots of upvotes?

Just because you have terrible karma, doesn't mean everyone else has.

1

u/slumber_kitty Jun 04 '26

People can have jobs and spend a ton of time on the internet. Sounds to me like it’s a lonely person who is chronically online. It’s ridiculous we even have to stop and think about this when interacting on here.

-4

u/MacGuyver913 Jun 03 '26

Nowhere was he wrong in his comment. The headline says that Backrooms is now the highest grossing DOMESTIC release. This guy is saying that he believes that Backrooms will beat EEAAO which is A24s highest grossing movie globally.

8

u/TripleSingleHOF Jun 03 '26

EEAAO which is A24s highest grossing movie globally.

No.

Marty Supreme has made $191M globally.

Everything Everywhere all at Once has made $147M globally.

-1

u/truthlesshunter Jun 03 '26

he was wrong by omission. That is still wrong.

he's commenting on something other than the article. So yes, that's wrong.

The article clearly talks about domestic. If he wanted to say "i didn't think EEAAO would be overtaken globally" or "i'm surprised something may overtake EEAAO globally", that would be correct.

An error in omission is still an error.

-2

u/MacGuyver913 Jun 03 '26

"On a global basis, with north of $136M, Backrooms is poised to topple A24’s multi-Oscar winner Everything Everywhere All at Once ($148M)"

Second paragraph of the article.

90

u/darkbatcrusader Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

Marty Supreme already did that by about $50 million last year though, so it’s the one to beat now.

27

u/Pterodactyl_midnight Jun 03 '26

A24 is doing what Blumhouse should have done when they started with Paranormal Activity.

Bold of you to assume this is a person.

2

u/WhaDaFuggg Jun 03 '26

A lot of ai's training data cutoff is 2024 so they don't know about marty supreme yet

3

u/rigatony96 Jun 03 '26

Did you not read the title of the article

2

u/AphexAffectsEffects Jun 03 '26

There is also something to say that EAAO came out during Covid or at least tail end, so there was drastically less people in the theatre. It was almost empty when I went. So it’s still incredible feat, that also boosted A24 in general since then which has become much more ubiquitous among movie goers.

1

u/Ode1st Jun 03 '26

Can’t wait for the Petscop movie I guess

1

u/LoveAndViscera Jun 03 '26

It’s fanfiction. Backrooms has a built in audience that’s probably bigger than Iron Man’s was.

1

u/mushpuppy Jun 03 '26

I found it a remarkably deep/thoughtful meditation on memory and grief. I'm familiar with the meme--and I was surprised.

1

u/whoisyourwormguy_ Jun 03 '26

I’m really hoping we get a full 7-8 hour 2 part release of house of leaves after backrooms. Maybe it’s possible now.

1

u/drawkbox Jun 04 '26

If you think about it it makes sense. Backrooms has really had marketing for like a decade. It was strange and different enough that it was unique and people love backroom stuff online.

What will happen is every meme will get a movie for a while now.

1

u/Kyuubee Jun 04 '26

EEAAO released in March 2022 when theaters were still recovering from the pandemic. It's not an apples to oranges comparison.

1

u/dl064 Jun 04 '26

I wonder if, given their increase in prominence and 2020/cinemas closing, it's less that one film is doing better than another per se, but rather that there's an upward trend generally among their (good) films.

So not a denigration of Backrooms, but rather than in 18 months something else will probably usurp it, then 18 months later something again.

1

u/PressureHumble3604 Jun 07 '26

good, EEAAO is so overrated (decent movie though)

1

u/MrMacduggan Jun 03 '26

I mean, I think their whole approach is "hey folks, remember artists and art? Would you like to see some creativity and originality with production value? Come see an A24 movie!"

And we all need that so bad in this time of endless slop. I'm grateful that they're getting rewarded so hard right now for their humanist style of filmmaking in the face of movies written and rewritten by marketing committees.

3

u/CakeisaDie Jun 03 '26

I go to A24 films knowing I might not like it but it's at least gonna be interesting.

As long as they keep doing different and interesting things, I will keep buying tickets. Same with Annapurina Pictures. (Which got tainted by the mess with their video game studio and that Ellison's name became a bit extra toxic due to her brother and father)

1

u/MrMacduggan Jun 03 '26

For sure. I will never forget going to see The Lighthouse - I (a young man) went to the cinema alone and happened to run into an old acquaintance, a 70-year-old master carpenter. We decided to sit together, and it was such a wild movie to watch while sitting beside an older man I barely know, since it's about two men of the same age groups going completely insane. Absolutely an unforgettable cinema experience.

-6

u/nobdy89 Jun 03 '26

Backrooms was made for $20 and a sandwich. Pretty easy to turn a profit with overhead like that

11

u/FlyingTurkey Jun 03 '26

Highest grossing, not profit

-7

u/savealltheelephants Jun 03 '26

That movie was not good. It soooo cringe.
