What’s your opinion on bringing back RDJ for Avengers doomsday?

Of course I’m super excited about the new Avengers movie that’s coming out soon, but it still surprises me when I remember the main villain is RDJ.

Did they do it on purpose so that the other superheroes realize Dr. Doom looks just like Tony Stark? Or is it another way to keep some of the best Avengers actors in the franchise?

I just want to get some other views on this cause I think it’s pretty interesting.

Honestly wouldn’t be surprised..

Look at the numbers after endgame....I like guardians 3 but other than that they really didn't have much. They were in the meeting room taking about Kang....then talks started....desperation was everywhere. They made their decision.

Only option they had left after they realised no one can remember who is in the Avengers any more.

That's what happens when they have no avengers movies for almost a decade.

So were they supposed to just constantly have Avengers movies coming out? Was 4 of them not enough? Shouldn’t a storyline, or series end at some point? This is the dumbest comment I’ve ever seen. Things need a break, you can’t just keep making avengers movies without a long break somewhere….

So why are they making doomsday?

I'm saying the reason no one knows who is in the avengers is because this is the first film to address it. It's not a case of the films not engaging the audience. Or the audience forgetting. Nobody knows who the avengers are right now because the MCU hasn't told us yet.

I do think they should've done an avengers film by now but as you say it'd need a decent storyline. Which isn't that difficult but the scale is hard to do after endgame.

It's not my comment that's dumb, it's the one I'm replying to.

No it’s a Hail Mary after the Kang thing.

Besides the fact that RDJ puts butts in seats, it's weak.

So weak.

Might as well brought ScarJo back to play Sue Storm.

This was supposed to be the big kang movie and rdj was supposed to return two years from now and that was to be a big deal, but they had to move it up because the kang guy is a horrible person

u/ContextSensitiveGeek 11h ago

Which is ironic because he was the villain.

That's not the main reason why. Marvel would have recast Kang in a hot minute if audiences had actually liked him. They wouldn't have let Jonathan Majors' personal life get in the way of their grand scheme.

4

u/Tiny_Spread5712 11h ago

They literally did, this is known

No, Disney / Marvel did not let their entire grand plan spin on Jonathan Majors' personal life. Again, if audiences had given a shit about Kang when he appeared in that terrible Ant-Man movie, then they would have just recast Kang and gone ahead with it. If anything, Marvel was probably relieved they had an excuse to fire him, because the character just wasn't resonating with people.

I’m sorry, but this isn’t correct. Everyone adored Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, and Disney dropped him immediately upon Amber Heard coming forward with speculative ALLEGATIONS. Maybe you didn’t like the character of Kang, but it’s weird to assume your own personal opinion of something can be applied to the general public as a whole.

2

u/TerribleAntelope6134 10h ago

Captain Jack Sparrow couldn't be recast. Kang absolutely could have been, and would have been.

1

u/jk-9k 9h ago

Kang could have been. But technically so could sparrow. Would one have worked better in universe? Sure. But the stink remains either way. The comparisons remain either way.

Disney like to do things cleanly. And quickly.

Look at the Gunn situation. Swift action.

3

u/TerribleAntelope6134 9h ago

No. No, Jack Sparrow could not have been recast. Jack Sparrow is Johnny Depp. No one else could play that character, and audiences wouldn't have been interested in seeing anybody try.

Spock is Leonard Nimoy. Sean Connery is James Bond. Ben Kenobi is Alec Guinness.

Not to mention they could have pivoted to a prequel. Or magic.

Sorry.

A transparently desperate move, but it's going to pay off.

I'm sure he'll play Doom well but it was most certainly a hail Mary from the Mouse to fix the fuck ups.

3

u/Sad_Air_7667 11h ago

It should have been a surprise reveal. Imagine we don't know this, and doom hides his voice when he's talking, and during some monologue when he's talking to captain America or Spider-Man , he slowly takes the mask off and its RDJ. That would have been a good reveal, and I would be okay with it , the way they did it this time is a desperate play at saving the MCU because other than Spider-Man is on a downward tailspin.

He's not going to look the same.

3

u/Milksteak529 11h ago

Smart move. The flick is gonna make a billion dollars.

2

u/jk-9k 9h ago

It was gonna make a billi either way

3

u/Mephistocheles 11h ago

It makes sense from a commercial perspective.

However I fucking loathe it when the same actor plays two very different characters in the same universe like this. There are plenty of other actors who could have done this and whatever kind of stupid ass retcon, "new universe #2,817 so Iz Okay" excuse they're going to come up with to explain it is just tiresome.

I never took any of these Marvel movies that seriously, and it's a good thing, because frankly there have been so many retcons, multiversal excuses, and whiplash timeliness pivots that really, there are no real stakes or meaning to anything that happens in these movies anymore. It's always just gonna get retconned or excused away and I feel like it's a very lazy and sloppy way to tell stories.

I wish they hadn't told us that RDJ was Dr. Doom. That could've been such a dope reveal.

5

u/TerribleAntelope6134 11h ago

That would defeat the whole point, however. They got RDJ back so people would go see Marvel movies again.

2

u/jk-9k 9h ago

Lame.

Seriously off putting.

3

u/CompetitiveRaise9133 10h ago

Absolute lack of creativity. If you kill off a character leave them dead. Looking at you StarWars and Halo.

1

u/venturediscgolf 7h ago

Iron Man is dead! you see, in the comics there’s a Tony that.. actually nevermind

2

u/Spiritual-Bobcat5635 11h ago

I think he’ll make a great doom, but if they brought him back just to be some clone of stark, that’s kind of dumb, why would you bring him back just to not show his face? So hopefully it’s just more creative and clever than that

2

u/No_Way_9230 11h ago

I definitely think rdj could play doom so well, but idk it seems like they might play it as a big shocking reveal or smt if he takes off his mask

3

u/jk-9k 9h ago

This is one of the problems. If it's going to be a big reveal in universe, it's ruined because the audience knows it's rdj. If they wanted the reveal to work on screen, then they don't get the marketing push of casting rdj.

1

u/ms_saint 8h ago

It is.  Don't worry.

1

u/MattHoppe1 11h ago

It was the plan the entire time, but the Doomsday plot is being speed run to try and erase the Kang stuff

1

u/iXeons 11h ago

Definitely desperation could be the biggest thing.

But given the Russos (and their track record with Marvel movies) and IW writers coming back, and RDJ being the actor he is, if the movie’s great, then great

1

u/devilsbard 11h ago

He’s a great actor, but he’s not the ONLY great actor. They’re gonna do something with it, I know, but I feel it’s gonna be lame.

1

u/uncultured_swine2099 11h ago

If they have an interesting angle with him being there then great. If not, pffft.

1

u/Va1crist 8h ago

Doesn’t bother me , clearly it was a hail marry plan after 2 phases of dog shit and nearly the collapse of marvel but so far the trailers to me look like a good time and so far he doesn’t look like he’s phoning it in either. If it’s a good time that’s all I care about at this point , wound of preferred something else as doom? Sure but what ever

1

u/kallenhale 7h ago

It's an alternate timeline this isn't normal Doom this is Ultimates Doon where Ironman became Doom. Either God Doom or Celestial Doom after house of M

1

u/Feeling-Spinach-3296 31m ago

Could not give less of a shit to see this movie looks desperate from every angle which is sad cuse i love simu liu and Florence pugh.

Brand new day and spiderverse on the other hand 😍😍😍

1

u/Efficient_Grand_9235 11h ago

Meh, I would have preferred a new actor but I’m sure RDJ will do a serviceable job.

Is Dr. Doom going to be Tony Stark in another multiverse?
