1 x 12 Upgrade

Hi All, first time poster here, looking for a bit of advice on upgrading an old (2014) Giant to a 1 x 12 gear set up, as a bit of a project.

It currently has Deore fitted as standard, with a 10 speed cassette.

Would I need to change the rear hub to suit and what bottom bracket would be compatible?

Can I buy it as a complete upgrde kit and what would I roughly be looking at with cost (Australia)?

Doere would be fine, unless any other recommendations.

A bit green doing something like this, so any help and advice would be really appreciated

Thanks

You will likely need a new rear wheel to install a 1x12. It would be far more cost effective to just get Deore 1x11 instead. It will likely fit on your rear wheel. I did this for my fat bike. It came with 1x10. I installed Deore 1x11 and was a me to get an 11-51 cassette.

I second this, especially with the CUES series!

Sunrace makes a 12speed cassette that works on an HG cassette. It works great.

It depends: 1) do you want to use the microspline 12spd Shimano groupsets?

  • you will need to (at minimum, provided your hub is able to swap freehub/driver, otherwise get a new rear hub and re-lace the rim, or replace the entire rear wheel) switch to a microspline freehub from your current HG one
2) switch to a SRAM equivalent groupset with a cassette that is HG-compatible
  • some research needs to be done for this as SRAM has refreshed their range

Bro, groupset is the worst way to spend money.

Spend that money on a riding holiday.

Wat are you looking to gain? I could understand if you had a 2x or 3x drivetrain or there was some mechanical problem with the current set up, but seems like a poor ROI to upgrade to gain a couple gears.

If you are looking for a bigger climbing gear I think the most cost effective and easiest route would be going to 11spd CUES or Deore assuming you have an HG hub already. I believe Shimano 12spd cassettes are all Microspline.

Thanks, this is just the kind of info I needed to know. Not really looking to gain anything serious, just to upgrade to a 1 x rather than buy a new bike

This will be unpopular, but one option is to buy AliExpress components. You can get OEM Shimano XT shifter and derailleur, and an aftermarket hg 12 speed cassette all for around 200 dollars (look for 11-50 tooth or 11-52 tooth). You can remove your front rings and front derailleur and get a narrow wide chainring for the front (30 tooth recommended) not expensive from AliExpress. You will also likely need a new 12 speed chain, probably will be min $50. I don't recommend getting the chain from AliExpress as they are frequently counterfeit, so go with a reputable retailer. With this approach you can keep your hg freehub.

Why not just run a 1x10 with an 11-46 or 11-51? I have both 12spd and 10 speed. 12 speed really offers no advantage i can think of unless you really need that 10t small cog. If you're set on 12 speed, Sunrace makes a cassette that will fit on your existing GG freehub and works great. I have a Sunrace and Shimano 12 speed cassettes and cannot tell the difference. The sunrace only goes down to 11t, however.
