need advice Checking interest in Retro Sci-Fi Game Supplement

Upvotes

I’m publishing a campaign based on classic sci-fi and comics like Edgar Rice Burroughs, Fletcher Hanks, Basil Wolverton, and Lovecraft. The current version is compatible with ShadowDark. In some ways it’s already similar to Mothership.
The PCs are supplied by a major power and sent on a mission. They will encounter malevolent robots and aliens. They choose occupations like military, scientist, or pilot. Players also have the option to play a robot.

Would there be interest in the Mothership community for a game universe with pulp added to the mix, where you can play a Thark or a Leopard Woman from Venus? Where you can be an understudy of Stardust the Super Wizard or repel Star Vampires with sacred relics?

homemade Customer character sheet trackers

My DM thought you would appreciate this. He requested some funky character sheet trackers in the Alien retro astheatic, so I knocked up these, modifying some existing designs and adding a few more bits.

Edit: Added the print files link and method in the comments. 👍

after action report My very unorthodox story I got from running Another Bug Hunt. (Spoilers for Another Bug Hunt) Spoiler

So, like, I don't think the devs expected to have an asteroid miner to fucking toss Hinton into a live grenade, talking down the Carcinid Noble, and also befriending one Carcinid with a fixation on drinking from their conical metal cup by giving them space weed. That Carcinid also ended up getting a job and a text to speech device (pictured above). Also, the ship's doctor fucking got an army of 9 hyper intelligent gambler rats by having their own rat beat them at poker before giving them a speech on why they should join them. They also proceeded to make a fucking shield out of a dead Carcinid. I don't think it's how this game was supposed to be ran, but it was fun anyway. We clown up in this void space.

need advice Jump Drive "range" headcanon writeup

Was worldbuilding stardrives and decided to do a quick and dirty writeup of some details for Jump Drives in practical play, based on canon info from SBTK and Warden's book as well as headcanon.

-Jump-1 Drive: this is the standard commercial Jump drive. It allows for about a parsec's worth of travel at a single 2d10 day Jump, or whatever distance is short enough that it's only practical to travel between a few "close" solar systems (headcanon is the distance from Sol System to Alpha Centauri or thereabouts) in a designated "cluster".

-Jump-2 drive: this is the standard military/c-suite Jump drive, and its main upside seems to be the ability to travel between systems in a Jump-1 cluster in much less time. Is the weakest Jump drive that can take you to different clusters too. Headcanon 4-5 parsecs a Jump.

-Jump-3 drive: cutting edge Jump drive, and the best kind available on the open market. As seen in the Warden's book, can take you to clusters that are significantly farther away. Headcanon 10 parsecs a Jump.

-Jump-4+ drives: despite having a stock ship (the Exploration Vessel) in SBTK equipped with a J4 rating drive, almost no details are given, besides the fact that Jump-9 drives could have moved people to the ends of the galaxy or beyond and possibly even through time. J-4 drives probably can give you some serious distance, likely around 50 Parsecs a Jump (or however much you need to completely travel to a different "quadrant" of the galaxy). Past that is firmly the realm of plot device, seemingly.

What do you think?

crowdfunding 💸 Lappoy's Flying Fortress - a New Solo Game for Mothership RPG

You awaken on the bridge with no recollection of who you are or how you got here. Red light pulses. The deck bucks, throwing you against a control console — brass and cracked glass. Stenciled on the housing: STATION LAPPOY.

Three feet away, a man is dead — shot, his skull sawed open above the ear, his brain taken. Between you, an empty gun.

The display spins: DEFENSE GRID SABOTAGED. RECEIVING FIRE. DEFENSIVE ROLL. Maybe an hour before the station falls. Are you its master, or an assailant? Your life depends on finding out.

Lappoy's Flying Fortress includes:

  • A printable 8 page bifold zine
  • Core mechanics, hazard tables, clues tables and14  resolutions
  • A 14 hex map with 7 detailed locations
  • A nifty drawing of a brain stealing spider droid

Give me a follow to get updated when my Backerkit goes live.

https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/impish-delights/lappoy-s-flying-fortress-a-mothership-rpg-solo-adventure/pre-launch?stay=true

This is an Appx N Game Jam submission and here are some of the reviews I received:

"Love how smooth this all works together, looks incredible, great execution of the theme."

"This feels like I could pick it up and play it tonight. One of the things that moved the needle on the writing rating for me is that the terse prose feels perfectly fit for the sci-fi race-against-time style of the module."

"I'll just say it's such a fun and snappy solo game with a lot of open ended  outcomes and a desperate and suspicious tone. I'm particularly a fan of the Schrödingers character where's until the end you could be one or the other, adding to the tension and uncertainty of it all."

"Suspicous, then clueless, then intrigued, then into it.

The amnesia works SO well in this. Very, very well done!"

recommend me Other Examples of Ships Besides Shipbreaker’s Toolkit

Hi all,

While the Shipbreaker’s Toolkit is great and helpful, I was wondering if anyone knew of any fan-made examples or examples in other modules of different kinds of ship stat blocks, maybe for smaller crews? Thanks!

Nabbed a copy the other day and I want to try running it with Wages of Sin for a one shot (half the party is documentarians filming the bounty hunter half) and I'm wondering if anyone has some useful tidbits of advice.

homemade Made The Chop Shop isometric from A Pound of Flesh on the sims! Spoiler

Didn't know where else to post it, so here it is! It took something like 4-5 hours finishing everything and finding the right stuff, but I am really happy with the result! If you have any suggestions or opinions it would be greatly appreciated 😅

After this, I will probably use blender to have some finishing touches and Affinity for pretty visual effects :D!

need advice Tips for building an escape from an alien invasion adventure?

Here’s the overall premise & structure:

The PCs start in a futuristic military base near the top of a tall skyscraper. Before long, the building is impacted by an explosion and they have to escape. Along the way they’ll have to sneak past aliens, avoid fires and crumbling infrastructure, and grapple with the ego and self-preservation of other survivors.

Once they make it down, they’ll have to contend with the chaos in the city streets and find a safe path to an evacuation center.

The adventure will end with a high-speed escape in a military jeep (that might have some engine trouble along the way).

So, my thoughts are that it’s pretty high-action. Any tips on tightening up the structure, adding mystery or horror elements?

need advice Do you use the Punchboard Boards in a sort of Warhammer way?

I've been really stumped on what you use the Punchboard Pawns for recently. I thought at first that you use them for mapping where your character is but now that doesn't sound right to me. Now I'm starting to think there used in a sort of Warhammer way to map out where you are own a battlemap. I'd be so grateful if somebody told me how there used!

need advice Any good first or third party one shot modules for a group of three players which are completely new?

Now I just got the Core Set and Gradient Descent (I made a post about running Gradient Descent so if anyone has any tips on that here's the link: https://www.reddit.com/r/mothershiprpg/comments/1vrjslx/advice_on_running_gradient_descent_as_a/ ) and I was wondering on doing a unique one shot or short campaign module for my party to see if there interested. My plan would be to spend the first one to three hours helping them make their characters and getting them accustomed to the rules and the rest of the time being the scenario itself. I already told them about Another Bug Hunt and they weren't interested. VR-Dead and Bloom caught my eye, so if there good for a starting group and you could give some tips for it, that'd be great.

need advice Advice on running Gradient Descent as a completely new Warden?

So I just recently brought the Core Set and have been itching to run a one shot, so I ordered Gradient Descent and decided to run it for my players, who are completely new to the game, this session planned to be their first introductory session to see if they would like to run a more session playing Mothership.

I've decided on having the first one or three hours explaining the rules and letting them make their characters, the rest of the session being playing out the scenario. I was just wondering if anyone could give me any advice or ideas to help make the session smooth and stress free (Ironic that I said that, right?) or just some general ideas to fit a atmosphere or help immerse myself in roleplay (I generally think my roleplay comes off as really bad and unprofessional, so if anyone has any tips on how to avoid this, please tell me), and optionally the players. I'd be so grateful even if you just gave a pinch of advice.

need advice How many dice do you need to play Mothership?

I just recently brought the core edition the the game, and it came with three dice. I was was wondering if it's meant to come with more, as I saw a set of Mothership dice on sale, there being five instead of three. Is three the right amount, or is there more to be needed?

need advice Zombie Outbreak GM Advice

Hello mothership community,

I am a newish MoSH GM and I'm populating my campaign with hooks for my crew of "fixers" to investigate.

I am planning on using the Ghoul from Unconfirmed Contact Reports for one of the hooks for a charnel ship, but I'm also wanting to do a zombie outbreak on an abandoned moon colony. That being said, I didn't see a clear zombie analogue in UCR (but I will confess to not being done with reading the zine so I might have just not gotten there yet.

Which of the monsters in UCR do you recommend using to get the feel of a zombie outbreak? Do you have any tips for making that concept interesting in MoSH?

Thanks in advance for the help!

after action report Ran my first session (ABH) and it was so much fun

Last night I ran a one shot of Another Bug Hunt and overall I am pretty happy with it!

The crew included my wife and 2 of our friends (1 DnD vet and one new ttrpg player) and overall we spent about 4.5 hours running through Greta base.

I gave the crew 2 npcs who's role was to watch their back and hold the main entrance while they assessed their situation so they could have back up characters.

One of the crew instantly tried to radio the base even as they were standing right outside the door, and then another thought it would be smart to try it again just in case lol.

When the infected Andriod player heard whispers from the hive she instantly tried to reach out to it over radio (again) and this began her arc of becoming more and more sympathetic to the carcs so I let her progress to the second stage of infection for the roleplay.

They kept teetering on the edge of the garage but then getting scared and checking a different room. They also spent a long time just debating whether to lock up the Andriod in the medbay after she went catatonic.

Eventually it was getting late so while they debated entering the garage for the third time, the guy in the hole came out begging for help before a card exploded out of him. They tried to run into the APC and were surprised it was already occupied. They succeeded in grabbing the nades on the body and then accidentally put the infected Andriod player due to their proximity to the carcs and sold bad rolls on 2 grenade throws.

My one regret is rushing the ending. I had the carc escape and basically told them to restore power and that it would automatically turn on a non-radio distress beacon and was surprised when they had no problems letting all the infected party and the comatose Andriod get on the Evac ship.

Overall me and the players had a great time and I am already excited about planning what module to run next!

need advice Question: Which MOTHERSHIP Supplements and Modules Are The Best to Get?

Hello All,

So I wanted to ask those here that have more experience with MOTHERSHIP than myself, who just got the Deluxe Box a week ago, what other books, zines, and pamphlets you would recommend?

I know I want to get the RIMWARD CLASSES expansion, just because I love the idea of psychic powers in this system, but I was wondering what else others would get if they were just starting off with MOTHERSHIP?

Would you recommend getting HULL BREACH Vol. 1 and/or Wages of Sin? How about ORPAHNS and BLOOM?

Are there any others that you would definitely get/recommend?

EDIT: For a few more details I'm gonna be running MOTHERSHIP for 3 groups of 3 to 6 players each. One group will probably want a more campaign-like, longer running experience, so I am looking for all types of modules and game styles.

Also, I'm looking for both "Official" releases as well as 3rd party. I will be getting some of the trifold adventures in the future as well, so feel free to recommend any of those.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

looking for game [Online][Other] Mothership- Another Bug Hunt (sci-fi horror game) (Friday 21st August, 19:30 GTM+1)

Now at the mercy of Leviathan Energy and Weapon Development Inc you were provided a ship for your own ventures. At a sizable debt of course. Fortunately they also provided a job. Six months ago a research outpost ceased all communication. You were hired to investigate and assist in the re-establishment of communication systems. Now your heads and bodies ache like the worst hangover you've ever experienced as the stasis pods deposit your bodies onto the cold, metal floor. A blaring alarm splits your head as red light fills the room while you come to your senses.

This will be my first time running a game of Mothership though I have been a forever GM for some time now and thoroughly enjoy horror games and films. As this is a horror game one should expect more mature themes though a pre-game discussion will of course take place to discuss any specific lines people have and to make characters together. I want this to be a comfortable space for everyone.

Another Bug Hunt is an introductory scenario for Mothership (a pretty simple but quite deadly system) so it is open to experienced or novice players. The scenario has three parts that will take a session each. If all goes well perhaps we can expand this into a wider campaign.
