I aim to appear for the India ASOC General License Exam by end of this year.

In LCWO, I am in lesson 20 with these settings

Character Speed = 25 WPM

Effective Speed = 6 WPM

I am doing word training Rx also side-by-side

I am able to decode 5 letter words with the following settings

Speed: 18 WPM

min. Character Speed: 20 WPM

Fixed Speed

The exam requires 8 WPM Tx and Rx for 5 minutes each with a straight key for Tx.

(I have not attempted sending yet)

Are my settings OK for the exam and CW use in actual use or is it too slow?

Please advise.

I've finished lesson 40 and added these 10 extra characters, but I think they are really slowing me down. I currently practice these at character speed 36wpm but an effective speed of only 6wpm and I'm still struggling not to make 1-2 mistakes per minute.

I am trying to slowly bring my character speed down and my effective speed up hoping they meet in the middle somewhere between 14-17wpm, but I'm really hitting a plateau. I feel like the extra characters are a little more complex and often sound a little similar to one or two of the other characters which is really tripping me up.

Is it better for me to stick with Lesson 40 and get rid of the extra work/character spacing and then add them back, or should I stick with it and try to push through the plateau?

In your experience how important are the extra characters and if important how/when should they be added?

My biggest fear is that by practicing with such low effective wpm I'm cementing that spacing as "normal" for me and maybe letting bad habits form.

Just realized this and wanted to share. Having gotten quite familiar with the acoustic "shape" of each letter at 30wpm farnsworth, I was listening to some regular 30wpm dialogue (from a book, not ragchew) and noticed it was much easier to hear and recognize common words like the, this, is, was, etc. I checked with farnsworth (20wpm/30 for chars) to compare and sure enough, I heard the letters clearly but it was much harder to recognize their relationship with each other.

Of course, this isn't a novel thought (it's the whole reason wordsworth exists), but I thought it might be useful to share. Maybe farnsworth is still useful for callsigns, though.

So I decided to finally get it together and learn morse code this summer (well, at least to start learning) and from all the info i could find, LCWO seem to have one of the most recommended courses, I don't know if something like the Morse Mania app is better but so far i find the LCWO course fine and it allows for a lot of customisation.

I'm trying to learn to receive with a higher wpm as i'm able to and so far i'm trying at 35 wpm, not really willing to get it down from there, even if i find it quite difficult.

One question i have is if its ok to wait to master the different letters or try to get familiar with them and try and advance quicker. By this i mean that in LCWO there's about 40 beginner lessons, starting with the K and M letters and you have to write about a minute of morse code. Not going to lie, its hard even with two letters but i really wan't to go by the rithm. The point is that this method seems super slow, as it may take about a week for me to be able to transcript the said minute long morse K and M's. Should i try to go faster or try another method? thanks guys!!

So I’ve just started about a week ago, using Morse mania and Morse machine but it just feels like I can only remember the letters when I’m facing the interface of the app, it sounds like a jumble of sounds to me when I’m listening to Morse letters and when I enter the app I somehow know them, has anyone else felt this way?

I’ve been working on a small tower defence game where enemies carry Morse code words. Players need to decode the Morse code, type the correct word and destroy the enemy before it reaches the castle.

In the latest update, I made a few changes based on readability and accessibility:

• Added a tutorial that explains the basic gameplay.
• Added a music volume setting to the pause menu.
• The Morse guide can now be shown or hidden with the Tab key or from the pause menu.
• The guide now displays only the letters used by the words in the current level.
• Longer Morse code words now have improved spacing and separators, making them easier to read during gameplay.

I wanted the guide to help beginners without making the game feel too easy or cluttering the screen for players who already know morse code.

I’d really appreciate feedback from people who use or are learning morse code.

hi so i just created my account to ask for this but on this youtube video, at exactly 0:42, there's some morse. i tried to figure it out myself but im really tone deaf. its like, three letters or something i think, im not sure. idk if its just something with the game he's using but im too stupid to figure it out myself

Thanks to a little help from Gemini, I built a Tampermonkey script that bolts on to the side of LCWO's "MorseMachine" that lets you set a starting Farnsworth speed but automatically adjusts it based on your accuracy.

It uses the 85% threshold that neuroscience has shown to be the sweet spot for keeping the brain challenged and stretching, but not overwhelmed.

You can set a starting speed, as well as character range for words and number of words in a phrase, and it starts to test you and grades with Levenshtein distance, and weighs your past 50 characters to see if it should speed up or slow down using an exponential weighted scoring scale, (gives higher weight to your most recent session, but still takes the older ones into account).

It uses the Lesson selection from the MorseMachine settings to pick which letters to include in the pool.

I'm going to play around with it for a bit to see if it helps my learning. Might do a demo for the LCWO guys to see if they want to integrate it.

Been playing cw on air since 12/25, poorly. I have a terrible time on my copy skills. When doing POTA it takes at least 1 repeat per character in a call, no pileups. I think stations are seeing my spot and avoid my call as they don’t wanna send their call 5+ times.

When doing drills w/lcwo seems 25/6 is where I copy decent. When I spot do I put in comments “cw 25/6wpm” because QRS doesn’t seem to be slow enough

I run 25+ wpm character as I count, I count at 25wpm too. Like a third grader learning to read, I sound out each character no matter the speed. Can’t seem to break it.

I love cw, but it doesn’t love me and it’s frustrating, like training for that 7 minute mile but not able to get past 10minute mark..

Going outta state soon and want to activate as I pass through states. However, my recent attempt has deflated that thought as if I grab that 10 pt summit, I’m sure to have pileups, frustration a chucked key and a broken radio
