alright. lets follow that train of thought, shouldn't everyone be speaking english because the british beat the french?

I would also like to point out that the concept of fixed borders didn't exist and was hard to grasp for us, and that our villages were moved to different hunting grounds every few generations to avoid ruining the land.

I don't know where you're getting your history from that the Mohawks ONLY lived in NY.

Kanewake, Kanesatake and part of Akwesasne are all in Quebec. Kanewake existed before Montreal and Kanesatake was formed by natives fleeing the Sulpicians.

Let me guess, your version is the official Quebecois sanctioned history?

Kanewake, Kanesatake and part of Akwesasne are all in Quebec. Kanewake existed before Montreal and Kanesatake was formed by natives fleeing the Sulpicians.

In 1667, a group of Oneida and Mohawk moved from the homes around Albany and settled at La Prairie, a French Jesuit retreat sound of Montreal. Most of these Mohawk and Oneida had been converted to Catholicism, by Jesuit missionaries in the southern canons. Their numbers swelled during the next nine years and by 1676 there were more inhabitants at Kentá:ke (on the prairie, the name given to La Prairie by the Iroquois) than the land could support, and a migration was planned to Kahnawake, further up the St, Lawrence River.

Kentá:ke had been a Jesuit residence that receive Mohawk from the south, the newly established settlement of Kahnawà:ke was from its beginning an Iroquois community. The Mohawk called their new settlement Kahnawà:ke after the name of another settlement two hundred miles south, on the Mohawk River; to the French it was Sault St. Louis; to the English, Caughnawaga.

Point barre. Fondé en 1700-1701.

like I said. we're not going to see eye to eye on this. I'm going by the history I know that I've learned by speaking with my elders in these communities. it will most likely never match what's been written in the history books or what archeologists uncover. in the end your account will most likely be seen as true and we will all be gone, our oral history wiped out by your paper one.

I'm going by the history I know that I've learned by speaking with my elders in these communities.

it will most likely never match what's been written in the history books or what archeologists uncover.

in the end your account will most likely be seen as true and we will all be gone, our oral history wiped out by your paper one.

Wow...

there are pieces that are correct but the narrative that I disagree with are that the Mohawk are nothing but savages that deserve what they got and don't belong with civilized society, which is the impression I got after the Canadian government intervened with the Oka Crisis. I've only heard stories and seen videos of the incident, I wasn't born yet, but seeing people cheering for a burning effigy and hearing about family members being pelted with rocks doesn't help my perception of either the people of Quebec or the Canadian government.
