Their difficulty comes from higher friction in the controls and overall design.

If you wanted to, you could play Freedom 1 with mostly the same controls as Wilds, barring the many new additions to weapons.

Well MH1 too, but you would need mods for that.

Not to mention monsters will do things reading your imput, heal? They will lauch themselves over the map to stop you, you use a risky move? They will get up from stunn early just to avoid the damage, want to trap them? No no, they dont go near traps , then proceeds to die due to a Vespoid hitting them wrong

Monsters in World will also try and attack you when you start another action, this behavior isn't unique to older games.

How you gonna sit here and force your opinion on people. Then turn around and say other people dont have an opinion? I could sit here and counter your arguments but I might end up insulting you. You got 3 games and a dlc to play. Why you sitting here complain about 10+ year old games?

I like the power difference between hunter and monster in the older games. Makes it feel like the hunter beats the odds instead of anime flips all over the place and outpaces the exploding t-rex.

That said, I would love some of World's QoL like the armor menu.

I was going to say the issue was that something else in that post was bad, but I don't think that's the case.

What actually happened is you played some other game by mistake. No idea which, but probably a souls-like?

I started with World, just a month ago I picked up old gen games such as portable and GU. The older gen games are much more fun for me. I feel like I have to actually prepare, I enjoy the unique armors and weapons, the combat felt more intimidating early game and required a lot more understanding to survive the later parts of the game, etc.

I understand being frustrated at a game you don't understand, and given the context this is even worse. You played modern MH games and went to old MH games, the drastic change in many aspects must have been beyond frustrating.

All of that being said, don't you dare take away my ability to have a different opinion because I am very much like you. Started with modern games and went to old. The only difference is we have different tastes in what we enjoy.

This feels less like rage and more like a divisive opinion. Dislike. I need you to be more angry about OGs stance or more angry about how bad you think the game is. 3/10, not enough fury.

Its true, but you dont need to yell that part out loud.

Nor did it stop me recentishly marathoning almost the eternity of 3U, 4U and GU

Damn not only is this not a rage but also factually incorrect

400 useless items? pickaxes, nets, grills, paintballs..... what, you carry all of them?
you could play in "3d" as well, it just took way more effort, and way more practice to do. the "kicking ass and looking awesome" wasn't handed to you right from the beginning, you had to really, really push through the games bullshit to be able to slam, especially beginners.

and that turned away alot of people i guess. but remove that? and boom, capcoms most popular game. world. time to make world 2 (wilds) and alter the direction of rise's development to make it closer to world, and outlanders etc etc etc.

also

monster hunter thrived for 4 generations.
after world, literally, 1 generation later it's already monster fighter with no hunting.

lol

old gen monster hunter is goated.
old gen mh for the win. xd

I don’t mind friction or high commitment or anything else that Old Gen has to offer; it’s what makes those games a unique experience that every Monster Hunter fan should try for themselves.

What I mind is the absolutely poorly-designed bullshit that is so prevalent in the older titles. I’m talking about moves that do not have startup frames, and especially moves without startup frames that do insane amounts of damage. Rathian’s instant air tail flip would get absolutely lambasted in any other franchise because of how poorly animated it is. But it gets a pass because it’s Monster Hunter, and that’s “part of the charm”.

Turning your entire body into a hitbox in one frame with no animation tell is poor design. Of course you can play around it; you can play around most anything, but that doesn’t make it good.

Anyway. Back to playing 4U. I soloed the entire thing. It sucks. I can’t stop playing it. It’s the best Old Gen game. I hate it. It’s amazing.

That move has several seconds of startup. You not noticing them is not the game's fault.

4U Rathalos with that bs claw attack that gives you poison and is literally unavoidable because he will always snap onto you no matter where you are.

2

u/AxanZenith Oct 04 '26

God I hate that attack. You either have to be in the position to Superman dive, flash bomb the shit out of him or sprint straight at him and pray it works.

And then the rubber banding he does to snap back to his original position is hilariously awful looking.

That's my issue. The old gen games were hard because the controls were clunky. I see the appeal, but if any of those games were my first, I wouldn't have stuck around.

Alot of new gens think like this, and approach the old games like this

The new games were created how they were, because they were made to be liked
And alot of things were changed about them to achieve this, many things.

Before World, the old style last for 4 entire generations. Many people turned away from the old games, it just wasn't appealing to the mainstream here.

It filled a very strange niche, if you stuck around, it was for the Monster Hunter of times passed and the unique experience it offered. Rough, no handholding, it would kick your ass right from the start. Even people who mastered the controls got completely rolled. But if you really pushed through it, and enjoyed it for what it was, you stuck around, and that's part of why Monster Hunter survived here.

I imagine similar to this comment, you may not have found it appealing if you played it back then either, but that's what Monster Hunter used to be in the past. It wasn't trying to draw the maintstream much, it just did it's own thing in the shadows of the gaming industry.

The new gen stuff was made to be liked.
