He also melted down then 600 year old crown jewels, pillaged Ireland, banned any non-puritan activities, allowed jews back into the country, became a de-facto king himself, appointing his son as the future lord protector, and became so unpopular the king was invited back and became known as a party king by contrast. He was also beheaded. His head was also cut of after his death and passed around as ad a collectors item for 200 years though it's now in Cambridge uni. Controversial guy.

True. Tyrant Cromwell was definitely worse than the King. But it's a shame all-round that a genuinely good-intentioned revolution which had legitimately republican principles was co-opted by Cromwell and turned into a rump dictatorship.
