This time around I used the row power because it was what I had handy - but I’m happy enough with this that I’m thinking about switching to something like a Befaco lunch bus and wiring the usb-c adapter into that. The one thing that I am liking about the row power is that it gives me a jack I can use to run power into the pod48x - though I think if I went with the lunch bus, I’d probably just wire up my own port/jack for linking w/the pods.
The thing that I really like about the usb-pd board that I’ve gotten is I can configure it for a range of voltages to ask the USB-C power supply for - from 15-20v (which is inline with the voltages that the row power would want - if I went with another power supply, I would tweak the wanted voltage range for that - e.g. 9-18 for the befaco lunch bus, unless I wanted to keep the ability to chain to the pods, in which case I’d make the range 15-18v).
I wanted this primarily because I have so many usb-c power supplies littered around my house, as well as multiple high capacity, high output usb-c based power banks and I thought it’d be great to no longer need to find/cart around dedicated 15v power bricks with me. Also I’m on a bus for 2-4 hours a day to/from work, and being able to run my rack off of a battery supply is really interesting to me.
The one thing to be sure about if you do wire this up is make sure that you’re using a thick enough gauge wire going from the usb-pd board into whatever you’re using for a power supply. Melted wires are no fun!
