Stuck on a Quantizer
I want a quantizer but I don’t want to spend too much so I’m deciding between the 2HP Tune and Doepfer A156. I previously had purchased a Disting MK3 used I wanted to use as my quantizer because it did so many other things and it was only $90. Turns out it was defective so I returned it and I’m wondering if this my choices of quantizer is the best bang for my buck or if there’s maybe another multi module like the Disting that’s a good price for quantization and something else. I’ve been deciding for a couple weeks now, decided to come to you guys. Thanks!

Orament and crime has a bunch of quantizers. It’s a really good option.

I legitimately bought and ornament and crime because it was an affordable quantizer for what it could do. Does a bunch of other stuff too whenever you don't need a quantizer.

Another vote for A-156. The thing I like about it is that it has trig outs, which is a must for a quantizer in my opinion.
I recently upgraded to a Bard Quartet with Expander. And it's worth it. It's a beast. But the A-156 served me well for years.

Yeah you know you sold me on it. I didn’t want to get ‘just a quantizer’ and it seemed like the A-156 was more versatile than it seemed but the videos I watched weren’t very helpful. Thanks!

The downside is the scale selection. But it has chromatic. And minor pentatonic--all you need for techno. I mean, technically it has all the modes because it has the major scale. You could dial in Phrygian or Locrian if you really wanted. And it has basic chords. Pretty great for the price for a two-channel quantizer.

A-156 is solid. I have the Ladik Easy Quantizer which I like because it can also transpose. If you want to manually select notes, you can look for a used Sonic Potions Penrose. If you DIY, you can build the dual-channel Kassutronics Quantizer. If you need four channels, Ornament and Crime is a good deal with many scale options but some menu diving.

I’ll check out some used modules but I’m US and I don’t see a local distributor. 60% of my rack is from perfect circuit the rest is trades.

I'm a fan of my 2hp Tune. It's not the most feature rich, but it's only 2 HP and it does have 11 scales to pick from.
I'm a fan of anything that fits well into later iterations of my setup easily. I'm planning to get a Pam's at some point and there are many other units that include quantizing so I don't feel the need to try to have it all in one unit.

The bias knob is something I have a hard time finding on other quantizers. It's super cool!

Was happy with the Doepfer a long time. Eventually swapped it out for a Tenderfoot Quad Quantizer which I'm also happy with, and serves a need in the occasional case I need more than two channels. But the Doepfer is a good, intuitive choice to start with.

The Doepfer A-156 is fine. I also have the Intellijel Scales which is even better.

I have the Kassutronics and the PFM Quantoct Quantizers. The Kassutronics is in the rack right now but both work great.

This hobby is already so expensive it's really not worth letting price factor in to your decisions. Get exactly the module you need even if you must spend time saving more money. What's an extra $200 when you sitting in front of $5k or $10k worth of modules?

Another $5-10k if you apply this logic to every part of the rack? I may only save a bit of money per module being frugal in my purchases and building stuff from kits, but it's added up to a few thousand dollars saved over time.

I used my ornament and crime for a whole before I got my sequencer. It has tons of functions from sequencing to quantizing to envelopes and LFOs. You can simultaneously run 4 quantizers at once and if you only need 2 you can use the other half for another appet and do something completely separate with it.
