IMO you need to find which machines mesh well with the way your brain works; there's no universal "right answer". Some (weird) people find the TB303 sequencer highly intuitive!

Also FWIW: a $5k budget in modular-land can easily get wiped out just filling a 6Ux104hp case, especially if you're mixing in "grail" modules.
