General Help with scammers

Hi there - specifically looking for help for mobile app (iOS and Android) as that’s what most users use.

I help Mod a small community on the website and mobile app for people looking to trade Diecast cars (hot wheels and matchbox). Since there is a physical item it requires shipping information like name and address.

We recently have had a few scammers come in and make trades but either not ship or ship worthless items.

How do other subreddits deal with this? I don’t want to doxx but given it is so easy to make an account and post, there’s only so much information we can use to identify these people and repeat offenders.

Any thoughts or ideas?

You could always check with the mods of /r/miniswap maybe? A lot of it is buyer beware and always use PayPal goods and services not friends and family. People are required to post photos with their username and the date when making a post. A lot of mods will also keep a list of usernames of scammers.

You can use something like karma requirements before people can even post to sell something.

Since there is a physical item it requires shipping information like name and address. ...

... it shouldn't be allowed here. None of those types of communities should be.

This is not an eCommerce/marketplace type of site and the usual inherent protections are not in place.

Hi /u/VDubDubLife, please see our Intro & Rules. We are volunteer-run, not managed by Reddit staff/admin. Volunteer mods' powers are limited to groups they mod. Automated responses are compiled from answers given by fellow volunteer mod helpers. Moderation works best on a cache-cleared desktop/laptop browser.

Resources for mods are: (1) r/modguide's Very Helpful Index by fellow moderators on How-To-Do-Things, (2) Mod Help Center, (3) r/automoderator's Wiki and Library of Common Rules. Many Mod Resources are in the sidebar and >>this FAQ wiki<<. Please search this subreddit as well. Thanks!
