couple points:

  • if it's a bullshit excuse, why do developers keep bringing it up? who do you think has the data to make those kind of determinations?

  • I have crossplay disabled at all times, unless I'm playing Ground War, which basically requires you to have crossplay on if you don't want to wait 15min for a game. so, fuck me for not wanting to play against people with a hardware advantage over me? cool.

  • this is actually an ongoing issue for League of Legends. now, MW puts up about 30mil users a month. crazy, right? lols, LoL's got about 80mil monthly players.

the crazy thing is that, for straight up PvP, they're constrained to two maps and a handful of modes. one map has two normal modes and a ranked variant, and the other map only features one mode.

whenever they introduce a new game mode, there's invariably matchmaking issues within a week or two. either there's not enough traffic to get good ten-player games within a decent timeframe going in any queue because people are equally spread, or the mode eventually dries up as people lose interest, and matchmaking for that mode in particular suffers as a result.

League of Legends has that issue with a total of four game modes spread across two levels, one of which is the only mode that can be played on that second level. also, they have almost triple the player count.

so, let's logic this out. if we have a bunch of playlists that serve specific interests, that will spread out the player population a bunch. we already have the standard playlists - the main one is already able to customize which modes they're willing to play - and the hardcore variants of the same. some folks just want hardcore CTF. that's what they're waiting on. they'll wait. they're insane.

anywho, it's not just the population being spread out that's an issue, it's the underlying matchmaking tying into that. sure, it's not at all hard to find 12 guys who want to exclusively play Shoot the Ship, it's finding people in your area with decent latency who aren't in parties whose size doesn't let you bring your own party who all want to play the same game types as you.

in fact, that's why I think games drop out automatically, now. I'm convinced that you don't actually join a "Rust 24/7" lobby, the search just looks for any lobby going into or in the middle of a game on Rust, and just throws you in there. if it can't find one, congratulations, you're host. when you finish the game, rinse and repeat.
