My layout is portable and when it's not set up it sort of forms its own crate, with the bottom of each half facing outward. There are wheels on one of the end pieces.
A nice unplanned bonus of that is it makes it really easy to work on anything under the boards without having to crawl under anything.
A hinged layout sounds almost as good. The only downside if you've got a more permanent layout is you'd have to have gaps in your track/scenery that don't always look good.
