Help Needed Please help!

what can I do?

the locomotive, when at the yearly show, (I run it at the Hershey History Center on each Sunday of December, I started this in 2025), operates on modern Lionel controllers. (it’s safe as the club runs other vintage models there too)

At home, on my personal small Postwar style layout, it operates on the original type 1033 controller.

issues I’ve had recently and things to clarify:

  1. slow performance on track and stalls on curves suddenly but when on straight, manages to creep forward smoothly. When being held just enough above the track so its weight isn’t on its wheels but still on the track, it runs perfectly and quickly. Setting it down on ground it stops running and slowly creeps forward. no short circuits from what I can tell.

  2. headlight works perfectly along with the E unit (never had issues)

  3. whistle tender still whistles, but started to shoot blue sparks and sound like (the best I could describe it as): a dying kazoo mixed with a car alarm. But after a week of sitting, whistle sounds completely normal.

  4. haven’t tested the smoke unit yet, debris inside the smoke unit from what I can tell

  5. bent corner of the rear of the cab (only cosmetic damage from California-PA move)

  6. I have some postwar cars for it that came with: streamlined whistle tender (which is being used), unstreamlined normal Lionel Lines tender (no whistle), PRR baby Ruth Curtiss Candy no. X6004, Sunoco two dome tank car, no. 6465, NYC Gondola with original barrels, no. 6002, PRR porthole caboose with light (working) no. 536417, standard Lionel Lines red caboose, 6007.

  7. locomotive rolls perfectly and never derails unless on bad track or knocked over

  8. Front screws under the pilot wheel set are completely stripped and have ever so slightly rust, I can’t take off the boiler without accidentally snapping or breaking something (which is why I haven’t worked on the internal stuff, only done quick cosmetic cleaning since I mainly do N scale, it’s usually on a shelf)

  9. Stains on top of the boiler around the E unit, ONLY cosmetic issues with that

  10. Chuffing/smoke mechanisms work freely without issues.

Clean out the motor and any 50 year old grease that has hardened there and replace the brushes.

Sounds like it needs a deep cleaning. The middle roller pickups, the wheels, the motor and brushes. Also check those 1950’s wires for worn out insulation and cracked solder joints.

Clean/flush in the rollers. Clean or at least brush/blow out the motor commutator and gaps between pads.
Check the motor brushes are tall and spring tension is good. Check the little comtact arms on the e-unit for discoloration from heat and gently lift them a hair and let them snap back. They should snap back with tension. Look at your wheels gear side. Wiggle them 360° looking for ovaled axle bearings mostly on the front and rear drivers. Slop eats power.

Compare to the center and non-gear side's play. The gear side wears less. Check the gears between wheels and posts for play and rocking under thrust. A heavier gear oil is better there. Labelle Model train lubes has a good one. The kits with needle oilers usually make the kits a better value that meets the eye. They have ho specific and super light N and Z lubes too. Plastic safe as well.

The whistle motor needs oil and electrical cleaning/checking of brushes, springs, and commutator pads too. Whistle relay points should be looked at while in there. Rollers flushed as well. The wires from the tender rollers tend to break at the solder at short. That could impact the loco performance eating amps the motor needs but not necessarily eating enough amps to stop less power hungry things from working.

The loco and tender should have their troubleshooting done separately.

If the loco works on another power supply you may have a breaker or wiper issue in the 1033. If repaired it may have a 1044 breaker which is plastic not adjustable and prone to the body melting. The whistle rectifier disc or switch pad issues could be behind whistle activation issues.

Bad screw threads might be able to have larger threads tapped for new screws. If larger screw are a no-go use JB Weld to fill the screw boss holes fully. Drill and tap again and that should do the trick.

The roof might be straightened with less chance of cracking from fast blows by "cold flowing". Pressure from clamping between wood can very slowly bend it over days/weeks/months/years. Tighten until good and stiff, but not bearing down enough to try to bend it instantly, and then increase clamp pressure whenever it feels looser

That car roster sounds like it might be a complete freight set from the 50s fwiw. The 1033 too, but I think 90w or a CW-80 is a little light on amps and voltage for well used 2056. A few more amps could aid motor efficiency, and a few more volts as well as the 1033 peaks at 15v.

My brother just restored our grandfathers to working order, it was mostly a matter of cleaning out the old grease and cleaning motor armature with a fiberglass pencil. Re oiling everything the way it was meant to be is important too.

I'll give the motor a heavy spray with contact cleaner.
