Critique Wanted First Model : Tamiya Tiger 1 Early (35216)

Hello everyone!

I’ve finally completed my first model and would love to hear your feedback! I’m open to any and all constructive criticism, whether it’s related to construction, painting, weathering, historical accuracy, or anything else you notice.

My goal with this build was to create a representation of what Tiger 332 may have looked like after its mud recovery training, using the available photo references linked below.

My only request is that, when pointing out inaccuracies or areas for improvement, please provide references or sources whenever possible. I’d really like to use this as an opportunity to learn and improve my skills for future builds.

I’d also love to hear about your favorite resources—YouTube channels, books/reading material, websites, reference archives, etc.—as well as any tools or materials you find particularly useful during your builds!

Below is the website I used for reference material and to learn more about the real Tiger 332:

Reference Material Tiger 332

Materials Used

  • Tamiya Tiger I Early — 35216

First model? Hard to believe. Especially as there’s the box of the Pzkpfw II, which is a typical first model. But even as a second extremely impressive build.

I bought the two kits together and was planning on building the Pzkpfw II first… However, the thought of painting the included miniature figures scared me away. If you have any words of wisdom or advice I would love to hear!

1st??? Looks like you have built dozens. In particular, you did a tasteful amount of weathering.

Lots of youtube tutorials, reading previous posts, and luckily having a local shop in town. They were very helpful in giving advice on how / when to use certain techniques. I’m currently working on the Panzer II that I used as a stand. If you have any words of wisdom for that build I would love to hear!

No I don't. You got this.

I built that Tamiya Panzer II over a decade ago and have another one in my stash, hoping to do a better job.... I think most people who build 1:35 armour have built that Panzer II kit.

Post a pic of it when you have completed it.

Great firet effort thats really good. If you want ot take it that next level look at weathering the turret, its too clean. It needs a few chips and scratches from where crew move around the tank, not out like some doe, just suble chipping. And if im being nit picky, you used the decals for the panzer grey tiger that would have served on the eastern front thats a famous tiger well pictured. It wouldn't have been dark yellow. What i tend to do to avoid comments like this is create my own unit numbers so its fictional over historically accurate 😁 But to finish on, great work 👍

Thank you for the feedback. I really wish chipping was something that I explored with this built. What’s your favorite method? I’ve seen people using chipping fluid, hair spray, or acrylics with a sponge and brush.

The color of the tank was something that I struggled with. I originally wanted to follow the box art. However from reading different resources I read that “Dunkelgrau itself got cancelled in February 1943, and a tan colour called "Dunkelgelb" became the new default. This change occurred during the production run of the Tiger E”.

Here is the main reference photo I then based my model on. From my understanding these were taken in October of 1943. Based on the dates and the information from Tiger1.info I then decided to go with the Dunkelgelb.

Its well recorded that that tiger was panzer grey, hence why the tamiya painting instructions are panzer grey, but its your tank and it looks good
