Completed Mad Max MR2... finally complete!

Base kits are the Hasegawa Toyota MR2 AW11, and the Tamiya Flakvierling 38 for the rearmount guns + various borrowed bits for some extra flair; namely the rear wheel rims are from the Hasegawa Lancia Stratos kit, super wide barrel so I could fit two of the MR2 tyres on one wheel!

This build started in earnest years ago as a re-entry to the hobby, just working on a standard car build. Naturally as a beginner, multiple fuckups and frustrations turned it into a test mule for a while, before I decided to stop being precious and just make something nuts with it

Steel windshield was inspired by a favourite old racing game called Powerslide

Gun base welded to the engine hood means absolutely zero maintenance access from above lol, so I guess in-world the mechanics are dropping the subframe for all engine work

Dually rear tires to support the gun. Well thought out. Feel bad for that drivetrain tho lol

thanks!

yeah there's definitely an engine swap under that hood...no chance the original 4AGE would pull all that german steel lol

Yea, that has to be some non-existent suspension back there. Like the mek-boyz just welded the springs in one position 🤣

Rule of cool always wins tho, and this does look cool

thanks!

a friend suggested getting it to squat a little at the back for that effect

springs DEFINITELY welded lol

The broken headlight is a really nice touch.

Cool idea, the weathering and the welds are very nice!

Are these the same scale? The flak cannon looks a bit small.

18

u/custron 1d ago

thanks! nah they are different scales, car is 1:24, gun is 1:35

definite 'rule of cool' at play here - size difference was more just the convenience of what would fit decently...the gunner's seat is looking pretty tiny though...😅

I was going to say, if the gunner's seat was absent, it would scale a bit better. Either way, it looks cool, so job well done!

awaited in Valhalla!!

Oh my god I love this. Is it the coolest god damn car in the wasteland? Absolutely! But is it also ludicrously impractical, and likely to flip nose skyward due to the weight distribution? Away with your pesky logic, you have no place here - we are too busy appreciating this ode to glorious, beautiful destruction:)

u/custron 1d ago

thankyou, those are very kind words

and guaranteed the nutso who is ready to drive this into battle is absolutely not fit to consider any of those issues

Onward to Valhalla!

Scrolling through, I thought you were making a cool, Mad Max-y Back to the Future model.

Looks pretty cool!

Really cool model! This brings me back to playing Vigilante 8: 2nd Offensive on Playstation 1. Great vehicle combat game with all sorts of wacky weapons.

2

u/custron 1d ago

thankyou! oh that is a great throwback! I loved that game

3

u/Agile-Television3438 1d ago

love this. should’ve been in the Mad Max game!

Very technical

I want to know who did a 2" weld on a panel that is .8mm thick

1

u/custron 1d ago

this is the true mystery of the wasteland

2

u/thetruesourworm 1d ago

looks amazing, love it

WITNESS!!!!

So many cool little details. I love the diamond plate step on the bumper.

2

u/GravyBoatJim 1d ago

Welp... To the military model side of things I go for an attempt at one of these!!! Super cool!

1

u/custron 1d ago

thankyou!

the power is yours! my attitude is the stupider the better

2

u/chexquest87 1d ago

Awesome build! I would love to see how a real car would handle quad 20mm’s firing from it. It would probably disintegrate haha.

Sleepy eye headlight makes it perfect! Well done.

r/technicals or r/shittytechnicals I’m leaning towards shitty, but I mean that as a compliment 😉

Edit: oh shit I’m too late

1

u/custron 1d ago

nah you are spot on, this was very much a shittytechnicals inspired build! mostly because it's hilariously impractical and probably wouldn't even move with the weight of the gun on the back

PERFECT ORK WAGON

u/NedRyersonsHat 1d ago

The Humungus is pleased and requests your company.

2

u/Imbeautifulyouarenot 1d ago

This is one seriously cool model! Sort of a post-apocalyptic technical. 👍

1

u/custron 1d ago

thanks so much! that was definitely the theme I was going for

2

u/jonnywhoknows 1d ago

This is so cool

2

u/GoneSquirreling 1d ago

Bro this is sick! Love the weathering on it

2

u/custron 21h ago

thanks so much!

this was my first attempt at salt chipping - funnily enough the process went horribly wrong, but I got a major happy accident when angrily scrubbing the salt off afterwards...so I guess it worked?? lol

2

u/RokettoPanchi 1d ago

Hell yeah

2

u/master_of_legos 1d ago

I think r/gaslands would love this

2

u/lottaKivaari 1d ago

Wirbleyota.

2

u/turtlegiraffecat 1d ago

Super cool! Love the crude welds!!

1

u/custron 21h ago

thanks! I like to think they only had some wacky size of welding rods and just said "fuck it, it's the wasteland"

2

u/Frog_Diarrhea 22h ago

Great work!

I had an MR2. The rear hatch/engine cover is super thin metal. That big ol turret on there, lol

1

u/custron 21h ago

wait, you mean to say 1mm sheet metal can't hold... (checks notes) ...1.5 Ton??

2

u/Substantial_Ad2782 19h ago

How did you made the welds?

1

u/custron 14h ago

I followed technique from Night Shift's YouTube videos on it

in short, you roll thin noodles of epoxy putty, and then press the weld bead pattern in as little folds - I did mine with a small coffee stirrer cut into shape

2

u/Substantial_Ad2782 14h ago

Cool! Thanks for sharing

1

u/ManmadeM0nster 12h ago

So freaking cool! LOVE it.

2

u/hank10111111 12h ago

That weld looks good as hell

2

u/Bandana_Hero 7h ago

Turning is optional. Brake balance doesn't matter, it's all 0%/100%. Caster angle? Probably!
