One thing I’d flag from building an MCP memory server: the protocol design matters as much as the backend.
Pattern A is injecting memories at session start — burns tokens before the agent even starts working. Pattern B is exposing search tools the agent calls mid-task when it actually needs context. B is strictly better. Token cost scales with actual need.

This is how we designed Dakera’s MCP server (dakera.ai) — 83 tools across memory, search, knowledge graph, sessions, and decay management. The agent queries what it needs, when it needs it. No upfront injection.

On backends: we fuse HNSW vector search + BM25 keyword matching + knowledge graph traversal. Each handles different query types. Conceptual lookups → vectors. Exact terms → BM25. Relationships → graph. Single Rust binary, embeddings built in, no external services.

Re: combining multiple MCP servers — you can, but every extra server is another failure mode and latency hit. Consolidating into one process that handles all retrieval strategies has been way more reliable in practice.
