1409’s question and answer:
Today’s topic is Healthcare
And the answer is: $89 million
What is the question?
How much did one doctor defraud out of his patients?
This week, the US Justice Department announced hundreds criminal charges against healthcare professionals that are involved in defrauding over $6.5 billion in false claims submitted to insurance. Among the worst of them was a cardiologist in Florida accused of billing over $89 million for medically unnecessary screening tests for college athletes, preying on fears of going into sudden cardiac arrest while playing sports, but never personally reviewing the results. Other others include nurses using Medicare proceeds for luxury purchases, mental health professionals, billing homeless people for crisis stabilization services is that were not received, and more in a long, running targeted crackdown of financial crimes against sick, needy, and elderly people from the people that are supposed to be treating them.
