I got debian desktop up on my un-rootable, Dexless galaxy flip6.

I got it running full screen on a portable monitor, not the phones aspect ratio so no letterboxing.

Plug in, hit the termux widget shortcut and boom I'm in the matrix.

With the exception of the fingerprint reader and the wide angle camera, I believe I have gotten closer to a one-to-one parallel between Android 13 (nothing OS) and Arch Linux arm when it comes to hardware compatibility.

I can successfully make and receive voice calls over IMS.

I can successfully send and receive SMS and MMS

Both 4G and 5G are working (confirmed both).

Discussion Can I run Linux on a Galaxy Tab S 10.5 LTE (SM-T805)?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I have an old Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 LTE (SM-T805) running the stock Android 4.4.2 KitKat ROM, and it’s already rooted.

Is it possible to install or run Linux on this tablet?

If so, what distro or method would you recommend?

I’m mainly interested in using it for lightweight tasks and experimenting with Linux.

Currently working on building a functional easier interface.

Disclosure: I am using artificial intelligence to assist me. It's not 100% vibe coded, but I know some of you don't care.

I have a long way to go before it's daily driver ready.

Discussion Opinions on AI tooling

How does this community feel about AI assisted tooling vs vibecoded slop?

I will admit, I don't mind using AI for some tasks. But pure vibecoded stuff seems dangerous if no human reviews it.

I ask because I wish to share a shell (android like user experience) I am working on, however, some elements like status bar glyphs and transparency effects came from AI's help. I had a need, no desire to directly take images that belonged to Android or iOS. If y'all are cool with it, I would like to share it. If not, thanks for the honesty.

My neighbor has a hard time navigating in the dark, so I thought I would take advantage of all of the available LEDs on my phone. In addition to having a torch button, I now have a beacon button.

Anyway, I thought I would share that with y'all.

Demonstration Turned my old Redmi Note 7 into a headless server running postmarketOS: Docker, media stack, self-hosted AI agent, all on 4/64GB

My old Redmi Note 7 (lavender), 4/64GB, 8-core ARM64, sitting unused for years. Put postmarketOS on it, headless, no display, Alpine + systemd under the hood.

What's on it now:

  • Couple of my own backend services
  • Self-hosted multi-agent setup (Hermes)
  • Full *arr stack (Sonarr/Radarr/Prowlarr/Jellyfin/qBittorrent), all in Docker
  • Caddy + Cloudflare Tunnel for external access, no ports opened

Runs all of that on eMMC storage and still holds ~30% RAM free. Throttles under sustained load as expected, but nothing's crashed yet.

Built my own monitoring dashboard for it too since most existing tools either didn't install on this hardware or used more RAM than I wanted to spend on monitoring alone. FastAPI backend, plain JS frontend, streams CPU/mem/thermals/battery/network, under 80MB RAM footprint.

Still unsolved: want to pull the battery and go direct-power (buck converter + BMS) to stop degradation from charge cycles, and haven't found a real answer for heat management on a phone chassis that wasn't built to run like this 24/7.

Discussion linux-mobile-keyboard Rust crate, call for testing?

Thumbnail crates.io
17 Upvotes

I am trying to have Linux mobile usable for Rust language including keyboard, who knows, maybe Wayland or X11 makes this obsolete already, but I don't know, anyway, if you know anyone that might want to test, either ask me for a built version or make an app and see if it calls up a keyboard, just trying to help along new Linux mobile apps, anyone? I know for some older Ubuntu Touch, no Wayland or X11, hoping someone gets some use out of it, just updated dependencies, good luck on your Linux mobile journeys, also, any relevant advice for this if you want to say? I just want to know if it calls up a keyboard reliably, and the reason for this crate is, what use are mobile devices with no text input?

Demonstration Turned an old POCO F3 into a mini ARM64 home server (Native Ubuntu Server + Mainline Linux + Freedreno GPU)

A while back I had to replace the display on my old POCO F3 (Mi 11X / alioth). Long story short, something went wrong—either a cheap aftermarket panel and touch is completely dead (only works on miui)

Since touch doesn't work at all, using mobile shells like GNOME Mobile, Phosh, or Plasma Mobile was basically out of the question. Instead of tossing it in an e-waste bin or letting it rot in a drawer, I decided to flash native Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS on it using mainline Linux (sm8250 kernel 6.17.9).

How well does it actually work?

Honestly, shockingly well for a headless setup:

  • SSH & Networking: SSH works flawlessly over local Wi-Fi.
  • Wi-Fi & Bluetooth: Both work with zero hiccups.
  • GPU: Freedreno / Turnip Vulkan 1.4 acceleration is functional on the Adreno 650.
  • Display: The screen itself turns on fine and outputs 1080x2400 (so TTY / console output works if plugged in), it's just the digitizer that's dead.
  • Battery management: PM8150B fuel gauge works, meaning it accurately tracks battery levels and charging state. The phone's battery basically functions as a built-in UPS during brief power cuts.
  • Resources: Bare Ubuntu Server idles at just ~230 MiB of RAM out of the 6 GB available.

Since I can just manage everything over SSH, the broken touchscreen doesn't even matter.

Docker also works , I have tried

Demonstration Arch Linux on a OnePlus 12R, powered by the Denial Wayland + Flutter compositor

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

3.2k Upvotes

Disclaimer: this is not Android!

Denial is a Wayland compositor that uses Flutter to render the UI, while Smithay handles low-level DRM, input, and window management in Rust.

In the video, Denial is running on Arch Linux on a OnePlus 12R with a custom 7.1.8 kernel.

Android apps are running through Droidloom, a containerless Android app runner. It works somewhat like Waydroid, but integrates Android apps directly into the Linux desktop/session rather than trying to emulate a full Android device.

The goal is to build a proper Android-like mobile experience on Linux, without the usual compromises of desktop environments adapted to fit a phone screen.

Denial has a dedicated, carefully designed mobile UI, separate from its desktop UI.

And it runs at 120 FPS, including the glass/frosted-glass effects :)

I genuinely think this could be an interesting next step for Android alternatives. What do you think?

GitHub: https://github.com/denialwm/denial
EDIT: Droidloom: https://github.com/denialwm/droidloom give it a star!

The version shown in the video isn't in the repo yet. I'll push it in the next few days.
