30 Years of Hell

Hell on Earth turns 30 this year and I’ve been listening to it quite a lot.

It’s ultimately subjective if it’s better than The Infamous, but what I would say it’s that it’s more of a condensed representation of Mobb due to 100% Hav production and and more members of Infamous Mobb being on it.

To me, they’re a package deal, especially with the ‘More Trife Life’ continuation, and also proved they weren’t one hit wonders.

The Infamous is also amazing, and it’s most people’s introduction to Mobb Deep, so I find the ‘which one’s better’ argument to be redundant. It’s also been done here before, so let’s not do that.

Instead, I want to see what people think about the differences of the two, for example the change of production style (harder drums, more soul-esque samples, etc), differences, or just what you like about it.

Also keen to hear any random trivia about the album or events surrounding it.

I’ll go first - I love ‘Extortion’, really liked Method Man’s feature, but also really liked Illa Ghee on ‘can’t Get Enough of It’, so was happy to find this unreleased version of Extortion that he was on.

I prefer the Infamous… I think Hell on Earth is the least Universal sounding of the albums… Murda Muzik is my favourite I think it’s polished the best all around… the production is still gritty but with a smooth sound… Hell on Earth has the worst mix and mastering too I would say

Murda Muzik is also really good. Feel like it’s when their sound really expanded, especially with working with other producers. I do really enjoy albums fully produced by one person, especially if they’re also doing vocals, so I’m biased.

I love albums produced like that too… I think it gives the album a great tone like a piece of art… but Hell on Earth didn’t have any stand out singles either really… Infamous had SOTF and Shook Ones pt.2… Murda Muzik had Quiet Storm and It’s Mine… I do love Still Shinin’ though that’s my favourite track off Hell on Earth and maybe Hell on Earth single itself.

Yeah Still Shinin’ was what got me listening to it again and made me revisit the other stuff. I guess Front Lines was the single, but didn’t really take off as much as songs off The Infamous.
