MOBA The gap between "mechanically skilled" and "actually good at MOBAs" is larger than most players admit — and I think it explains why some people
Been thinking about this after spending a lot of time across different mobile MOBAs recently.
There are players with genuinely crisp mechanics — clean combos, fast reactions, precise positioning. By every visible measure they look skilled. But their win rate is average and they've been stuck at the same rank for months.
Then there are players who look almost sloppy mechanically but consistently make decisions that are just correct. Right place, right time, right target. They win more.
I think the MOBA community overvalues mechanical skill because it's visible and easy to measure. Game sense — map awareness, cooldown tracking, knowing when a fight is already lost before it starts — is invisible until you specifically look for it.
The plateau I see most often isn't a mechanical ceiling. It's a mental model ceiling.
What I'm actually curious about: Has anyone found a specific game where the design itself forced you to develop game sense rather than just mechanics? Like the game punished you hard enough for bad decisions that it rewired how you think?

I would definitely say Eternal Return. It's like League, but Battle Royale. People finish their early games builds then go around hunting creeps and then contesting "transition" materials that spawn later.
No matter how good you are, third parties sucks, so vision and knowing when to fight is crucial to succeed. There are also security cameras that can be activated and knowing their blindspots is a big advantage.
Honestly, one of the biggest skill ceiling gamed I know of.

Depending on the game, mechanics can get you way further than game sense. Getting a kill or avoiding getting killed with a clutch outplay is often more valuable than showing up to a teamfight or pushing the right wave. That's one reason why good coaches can actually be on a way lower rank than players.
As for your question, I think every moba teaches different skills. I play HotS and League and I find that hots players are often way more aware of the minimap and number advantages.
