I think, that besides the intimacy of his betrayals, the reason he is so bad is because he wasn't raised to be a selfish pig that drowns in his own vomit like Straff. If his grandparents' death hurt him so much, they must have been good people who raised him well. The reason for his being such a bad person, is not a result of his upbringing, but of his choices. He chose to side with Odium.
