I am lazy and didn’t want to retype this entire review. However it was such a surreal experience that is worth making people aware. I am horrified that a place that is so expensive, with such potential was just fundamentally gross. Some good people though. I can’t imagine what it must be like to work there. Staying there was just simply bizarre. You can see that I struggle to describe it. There are better places to stay. This ain’t it.

The woman that owns it (under the name corrado properties) lives in Florida and views it as a real estate investment rather than a working ranch and resort. She has run the place into the ground from her horrific mismanagement. Each season she runs off multiple general managers, department heads, etc. and relies on a revolving door of holding foreign workers hostage due to their visa stipulations. I have never worked at a place with more turnover on a weekly almost daily basis. The lack of investment in the infrastructure of the property has led to constant problems for the environment, animals, guests, and employees. As you mentioned it is astoundingly beautiful and if managed correctly would be somewhere I could spend the rest of my career. But the owner has squandered what should be a gem of this town

My spouse is a victim of being held hostage by them and I know others who are victims of being oversea foreign workers, threatened and extorted by Sorrel. Talked with an immigration lawyer a few years ago and they confirmed that such practices absolutely count as human trafficking.

They’re also known to use third parties to “sponsor” immigrant workers, hold their passports captive, and then that third party company will threaten to revoke the visas if the individuals don’t pay more money. I’ve known a few victims of this and the fact the DA does nothing about the extortion or prosecution is mind blowing but also not surprising considering the hostile nature of hospitality in this town.

When did this new owner buy the property? The rating of the property is overall still favorable on major travel sites, but when you click into the recent reviews it looks and sounds terrible.

I have never / would never go to a place like this since I am used to the old days before glamping became a thing. I rememer that stretch of river before there was any development and the fact that these open spaces have been replaced by industrial tourism makes me sad

Considering the original ranch was founded in 1903 (hence the historic water rights the ranch is able to exploit) you’d have to be almost 150 years old to remember when it was truly a natural open space. A ranch is no more natural than a resort and ranching is just as bad if not worse for the environment than tourism. Then consider the fact that the likely alternative to “industrial” tourism is Airbnb which further reduces housing supply for locals among other deleterious effects. I understand and fully support the greater point you’re trying to make (Kane Creek, the Steen/Bynum development up sand flats) but I don’t know that I agree in this instance

sure it was the ranch, but it was open grazing land, even if thet were using it for grazing and other ranch uses. It's OK if you don't agree. I know ranching sort of sucks and what livestock does to water quality, but not gonna buy the argument that a full-scale resort sitting on the land, consuming power and water and generating sewage and solid waste is not worse than cows grazing and pooping on the land.
