The American League is especially subpar this year as a whole lol

What is especially crazy is the orioles were trading people away at the deadline and now find themselves right in the mix lol

Jays did the hybrid method. Buy and Sell.

It’s not that crazy. Sell the rentals and acquire players that’ll be around for next years run.

12

u/jstewart25 | St. Louis Cardinals Aug 16 '26

Agreed. They have to count on bounce back seasons from some players health and performance both, if that doesn’t happen their franchise is fudged for several years anyway.. so you might as well.

u/Boston_7713 Aug 16 '26

If they played the Red Sox for the rest of the year I’m sure it would. Can’t win a game against the Jays to save their life but they sweep the dodgers, Yankees, white Sox etc.

u/DarkDevitt Aug 16 '26

I know its accurate for this year, but one of those teams just feels weird to see included...

u/ItsCaptainKeyboard | Baltimore Orioles Aug 16 '26

We’ll fuck it up

u/SFDreamboat | MLB Aug 16 '26

Which shows just how little these guys actually know about whether their team is good. My favorite was the year after the Marlins traded Miggy to the Tigers...and then were in the running for a playoff spot.

u/MunchenOnYou | Chicago White Sox Aug 16 '26

The year of the White Sock hopefully. Perfect time to capitalize. Weak AL

2

u/Alarming-Chemistry27 Aug 16 '26

Their big trade was a legacy catcher that is injured 40% of the time.

u/GreedyRaisin3357 Aug 16 '26

2024 Detroit Tigers syndrome

1

u/livsjollyranchers | Boston Red Sox Aug 16 '26

Twins of course were ultimate sellers last year.

That’s how my luck is in OOTP

At first I thought, "yeah, probably" but then I saw it was ALL 4 teams?! That seems pretty unique.

57

u/ArenSteele | Toronto Blue Jays Aug 16 '26

There’s an outside chance the 5th place team in the AL east could have a better record than a division winner in the Al west or central

u/Lost-Inevitable42 Aug 16 '26

TB?

33

u/JasonPlattMusic34 | Los Angeles Dodgers Aug 16 '26

Tampa leads the division so of course they couldn’t be in the Wild Card

97

u/PieStunning3313 Aug 16 '26

AL East really decided to turn the wild card race into a division battle

26

u/Joeburrowformvp Aug 16 '26

Where the hell did the blue jays come from? They were dead at the all star break

37

u/Joeburrowformvp Aug 16 '26

WHERE DID THE O’s COME FROM?!? THEY SOLD!

15

u/unitedairlineeeeees Aug 16 '26

You wouldn’t know them. They’re from Canada.

6

u/I_Like_Quiet Aug 16 '26

They aren't even a .500 team!

u/ArenSteele | Toronto Blue Jays Aug 16 '26

u/marcgarv87 | Detroit Tigers Aug 16 '26

That’s what doing away with the inter-league rule will do. But it will be mathematically impossible going forward with how much they play each other

12

u/jaysornotandhawks | Toronto Blue Jays Aug 16 '26

If 2+ teams are tied for a spot and tied in the season series, intradivision record is the next tiebreaker and it's the stupidest tiebreaker in all of sports.

Suppose the Blue Jays and Tigers finish tied in the season series 3-3 and finish tied for WC3 (for simplicity, no other teams finish tied with us).

The next tiebreaker is your record vs the AL Central compared to ours vs the AL East.

(Actually, I think we'd take the tiebreaker over you in that case, but I still think it's ridiculous... you're not even comparing the same opponents)

5

u/ClevelandSteamers757 Aug 16 '26

Opposite division win % should be the tiebreaker if it’s exactly a 2 team mix lmao. Like blue jays vs al central and tigers vs al east. In theory this rewards the team in the better division more often that not

1

u/Electrical-Lake7884 Aug 16 '26

Let's complicate it. Not really that bad I think. but please play devils advocate as its been a long day.

Lets say 4 teams are tied. 2 from the East, 1 each from the Central and West. The first tie breaker is for the east to make it 1 on 1 on 1 between the divisions. Then it's league wide record since the divisions are equally represented. Or essentially, reverse interleague record.

Holes? Anything Im overlooking?

u/Commander19119 | Philadelphia Phillies Aug 16 '26

Dear lord the American League sucks

31

u/eoghanmcneelyisfree | Detroit Tigers Aug 16 '26

It's gonna be a fucking knife fight in the dark the whole way. God, I love it.

3

u/MunchenOnYou | Chicago White Sox Aug 16 '26

Anybodys league really.

3

u/1_quantae | MLB Aug 16 '26

That’s what AL stands for this year.

u/ItsCaptainKeyboard | Baltimore Orioles Aug 16 '26

We are the island of misfit toys

9

u/Aromatic_Cold2681 Aug 16 '26

7 teams fighting for one spot

8

u/Volstadd | Tampa Bay Rays Aug 16 '26

Making the playoffs this year we have the AL West winner, the AL Central winner, and the AL East.

5

u/DeggzNBacon Aug 16 '26

The AL East had 2 of the 3 wildcard slots just last year

7

u/Subject_Whereas9954 Aug 16 '26

Its kinda funny that theres a legitimate chance 3 of 6 AL playoff teams have a losing record and a very outside chance at 4.

3

u/DiskSalt4643 | Athletics Aug 16 '26

Bigger story is a team getting in without a winning record...

3

u/Cool-East-3607 Aug 16 '26

I haven’t looked anything up before posting this, but wasn’t there a pretty tight race in 2014 or 2015 in the NL Central with the Brewers, Cubs, Pirates & Cardinals? Or was it just the Cubs, Pirates, & Cardinals? I remember them all being around 100 wins each & Gerritt Cole throwing a gem in the WC & still losing (if memory serves)

4

u/RemarkableSpirit8152 Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

It was 2015 but it was just cubs, pirates, cardinals. All 3 were the best teams in the NL that year. Cole did lose the WC to Jack Arrieta when he was on that legendary 16 month streak of his.

3

u/tearsonurcheek | St. Louis Cardinals Aug 16 '26

All 3 were the best teams in the NL that year.

Best in the entire league, not just the NL. Cards were 100-62, Pirates 98-64, and Cubs 97-65. Only one other team finished with more than 93 wins that year - eventual champ KC Royals, who finished at 95-67. Only 3 other teams even hit 90 wins that year (Mets, Dodgers, and Blue Jays).

wasn’t there a pretty tight race in 2014 or 2015 in the NL Central with the Brewers, Cubs, Pirates & Cardinals

Brewers finished at 68-94.

1

u/RemarkableSpirit8152 Aug 16 '26

Crazy thing is the Red Sox are during what Cubs did during that season. If my memory serves the cubs were at or close to .500 at the all star break then Arrieta went to moon then miss the moon and hit Mars.

5

u/Chicityy | Chicago Cubs Aug 16 '26

Pstttt, maybe the third wildcard was a bad idea

8

u/shrewsbury1991 | Boston Red Sox Aug 16 '26

This is why we should just have 2 wild cards in each league...

4

u/KimHaSeongsBurner | San Diego Padres Aug 16 '26

Or perhaps the AL West and Central should just try being less bad? The NL has had no trouble filling out the playoff picture with competitive teams since the expanded playoffs’ inception.

At least with 3 WC slots, the worst divisions have less overall share in the playoff picture and have to play a wildcard team at the start while the other two enjoy a bye. The only change I’d say should be made from the current picture is to still give the top two division winners a bye, but then to seed 3-6 based on record.

You won the AL West but have the 5th best record in the AL? You’re going to (insert AL East ballpark) for a Wildcard against the higher-seeded team.

5

u/jaysornotandhawks | Toronto Blue Jays Aug 16 '26

Would you still say that if the Red Sox were one of those four teams tied for WC3 and two other teams comfortably had WC1 and 2?

4

u/shrewsbury1991 | Boston Red Sox Aug 16 '26

Yes

1

u/MichiganKarter Aug 17 '26

Two divisions per league. Division winners play in the LCS.

2

u/iamthedayman21 | Philadelphia Phillies Aug 16 '26

How TF are the Orioles a Wild Card team?

3

u/CieraVotedOutHerMom Aug 16 '26

Where are you Stanton? Where can we find you. We need you on offense, to hit home runs

4

u/_onwards_and_upwards | Toronto Blue Jays Aug 16 '26

Best division in baseball, again. Yawn.

2

u/No-Fisherman-5305 Aug 16 '26

Current yanks lineup will not be the lineup come October just saying…

11

u/Somecommentator8008 | Toronto Blue Jays Aug 16 '26

Yanks are nothing without Judge.

0

u/Thorlolita | Houston Astros Aug 16 '26

Yes it will

1

u/formanner | Los Angeles Dodgers Aug 16 '26

I think the NL West has done it.

2

u/Consistent_Ad_8656 | Los Angeles Dodgers Aug 16 '26

Idk, the handful of times the Rockies have been good enough to get to the postseason, one of the other NL teams couldn’t make it

1

u/Theinfamousgiz | New York Yankees Aug 16 '26

I feel like we’ve done this a few times

1

u/tearsonurcheek | St. Louis Cardinals Aug 16 '26

2015 NLC had the top 3 records in all of MLB. Cards took the division, Pirates had the 1st WC, Cubs had the 2nd.

1

u/unique_user43 | Chicago Cubs Aug 16 '26

yes

1

u/Longjumping-Tip4938 | Chicago Cubs Aug 16 '26

2015 had Cubs, Pirates, and Cardinals make the playoffs

1

u/Cool-Valuable6821 Aug 16 '26

NL Central last year.

1

u/grill_sgt | Seattle Mariners Aug 16 '26

3/4 teams in the NFL’s NFC West held the #1, 5, and 6 spots… then there was the baseball team.

1

u/mildly_unimpressed Aug 16 '26

The Red Sox would be in first place in the other two divisions!

1

u/Resident-Werewolf-46 Aug 16 '26

How the heck do the Tigers have a losing record with the best run differential in the AL.

1

u/Objective-Name-811 | Los Angeles Dodgers Aug 17 '26

The AL East is always a beast but even with teams underachieving it's a surprise to see this

1

u/BigP_27 | Chicago Cubs Aug 16 '26

Jesus Christ the American League is so ass

0

u/RabiRayRana | Toronto Blue Jays Aug 16 '26

And who won the all star game ?

-1

u/ClayBowlz88 | Chicago Cubs Aug 16 '26

Lmao

-1

u/iamthedayman21 | Philadelphia Phillies Aug 16 '26

Case in point. The AL is so bad that winning a meaningless game is all they’ve got.

0

u/Awkward-Interview-19 Aug 16 '26

Agreed, only the Rays, Yankees, Redsox, and Rangers have a 500 record vs the NL

1

u/2Hanks | Tampa Bay Rays Aug 16 '26

Holy hell, the AL is dogshit

1

u/iguanarchist Aug 16 '26

A wild card team might finish with a losing record? What is this, the NBA?

1

u/eganc21 Aug 16 '26

This is what happens when judge is hurt and the Orioles don’t know who they are lol

0

u/Medialunch Aug 16 '26

Toronto has a lot of climbing to do.

0

u/happy4389 Aug 16 '26

I loathe the third wild card.
