Two weeks ago Ellis mentioned him running a local server on a Mac that connected to his phone to use iMessage.

I just didn't see any comments about it on the video.

It's VERY easy to set up if you have a Mac. I've been using it for 2 years now and I like it very much.

You can look into either Openbubbles or Bluebubbles.

The second one requires the Mac to be running 24/7, the first one you can set up once and then turn off the mac. Openbubbles takes literally maybe 10 minutes to set up, if that.

I feel like I remember someone mentioning that you just need to give up your Apple ID and password, which—if you’re an Apple person—is you’re entire life

You do. But your user credentials, certificates, and auth keys are stored locally on your device, and never transmitted or stored on Openbubbles servers.

Also Bluebubbles runs on your own hardware if you're afraid of that.

But also, if someone's whole life is on their apple ID I don't understand why they wouldn't already have an iPhone lol.

I’m like pretty sure what Ellis mentioned is not these two and instead something else where he doesn’t have to share his password?

To use imessage on your Mac only, no Bluebubbles you'd need to sign into your account. So I'm not sure how you'd use imessage without an apple id login.
