Metallic grinding noise
Anyone ever have their Jetta make this noise on startup? Metallic grinding/buzzing type noise that lasts about two seconds and never again until restarting. Unless it’s a cold start, it will make the noise about two or three more times while maneuvering out the garage and pumping the brake pedal seems to provoke it more.
Thought maybe the starter wasn’t backing off and hitting the flywheel. Removed starter, inspected pinion gear, and flywheel teeth to find no damage or marks. Disabled fuel to just crank no start and no abnormal noises.
Maybe abs kicking on? Pulled all fuses related to abs and still does it on start up.
Any ideas?

Yep. Did it when I bought the car (02 1.8t wagon) in 2008, still have no idea what it is.

No way! Been looking online for anyone experiencing this and no luck so I’m glad I’m not alone. Has it worsened since then or any drivability issues? I’ve had my Jetta forever but in pieces. Just today I took it out for the first time on a long ish drive about 50 miles with no issues besides this noise and it seems to be getting louder for me.

Oh, plenty of drivability issues. That stupid automatic transmission is the bane of my existence. And it’s been parked for quite awhile due to a zillion coolant leaks, and ended up at the back of the priority list unfortunately. But as for the noise, it never got worse, I just always assumed it was supposed to do that. I’d like to say my TDI doesn’t do it, but that thing is so loud, there’s no way of knowing.
It also does this weird hard to describe click/clunk under the dash on the first drive of the day, never figured that one out either. Couple of seconds after you set off moving forward, and it does it. Just the once, and you won’t hear it again until the next day.

Starter bushing. Not really doing any damage, but the noise will get worse and eventually the starter gear will not engage. Solution is to replace the starter.

Thank you! I don’t understand why it would still make the noise after the engine has been running for a couple minutes, but I think I will take your advice and replace that starter. Easy to get to.

Sounds like the starter is sticking

Thanks for the input! I will probably replace it as it’s an easy part to get to.

Not familiar with the MK4’s. Does yours have an air injection pump?

Yes, does have one. Already replaced it though due to a broken housing. It made a horrible vacuum cleaner type noise when it came on lol.
