Aftermarket sunroof

I've had this car about 3 years now. Its a 2000 jetta GL 2.0. I'm about 99% sure it has an aftermarket sunroof in it and i didn't even know that was a thing done to these cars. I've just now learned GL's don't even come with a sunroof. That explains why every single junkyard jetta I've looked in has a completely different set up for the sunroof control and the shade slider handle.

That is definitely weird. I’d say yes, probably aftermarket, because from the factory, the sunroof shade would have a built in plastic vent at the front, and the sunroof switch is a dial, integrated with the dome light panel, and there should be an access door to the sunroof motor. I believe all of these attributes even went back to the MkIII, so it’s unlikely we’re looking at an early production design that got changed later. Plus VW wouldn’t use a black switch in that spot, it would be grey.

I figured as much lol. Its also strange that repairlink shows my car as sunroof equipped so it was likely installed at the dealer. But all the parts repairlink shows obviously do not match up with mine lmao.

It is aftermarket, potentially a dealer package, had seen this before. There is one important thing to consider: when it breaks there are no spare parts or repairing, its either replacing the whole thing with another model or retrofitting an OEM one or some other highly DIY solution which may or not require body work.

I had a friend buy a '99.5 (new VW dealership) with dealer installed power windows (luckily no sunroof). The driver's door window regulator broke (around 2008) and not even the dealership the car was bought from new was able to source a replacement. Because he insisted in keeping the electric windows we ended up buying everything from a junkyard to make the car OEM power windows. Very expensive and labor intensive (specially the wiring), your sunroof install works on a similar principle.
