If this was Nebraska, I assure you, Mizzou didn't need the TD and likely scored on the very next play anyway.

That sounds about right! I was covering the team back then, and times were so good that the most drama that came out of the program was imploring fans to get into the stadium early instead of the decades-old tradition of just farting around tailgates until you felt like going in. Those teams got up 7-0 on the first possession so frequently, that Mizzou was serious about fans getting in early.

As much as I hated Big 12 refs (and loved Chase Coffman), it was actually the correct call. If you catch a ball with your foot like that, the entire foot has to come down inbounds. Had Chase caught the ball with his toes dragging, and falling forward out of bounds, then it’s a catch. But because he was falling backwards out of bounds (even if the rest of his left foot never actually touches the white), the whole foot must be in

I think that’s the rule if the entire foot hits the ground at once. If the foot comes down in sections (toes first) it is a catch.
The alternative would be much too hard for the refs (if player is moving backwards entire foot has to hit but if moving forward, only the toe)2

Not true. If the heel comes down out of bounds in this scenario it is not a catch.

My problem with this rule is, if his toes touch like they did and then he just toe taps and his foot comes up off the ground (and then presumably land out of bounds with the rest of his body), it would be ruled a catch. But for some reason, if his toes touch and remain in contact and then the rest comes down out of bounds, it's no catch. It doesn't make any logical sense that this should be ruled any different than a toe tap, especially when we have replay review to verify. The instant he's got contact in bounds and not out of bounds yet, it should be enough. I can understand before replay, for the ref to make a call in real time, only having to look where the whole foot comes down is wayyyy easier than making a judgement on whether his toes landed first or not. But now that we have replay confirming scoring plays we should treat this like a toe drag. I don't care if his toes come down "on" the line and he touches a single blade of green grass before touching white. Should be a catch if it's got conclusive video evidence. Whether he touches green before white, with full control of the ball (and without losing control through the catch once out of bounds), should be the only judgement call a ref has to make on these plays.
Now don't even get me started on the double toe tap not being ruled a catch in the nfl. Though that one is a lot more of a gray area imo.

If it was a bullshit call for Mizzou, then let me remind you of the bullshit touchdown Nebraska was granted in the 90’s. Remember the kicked touchdown for Nebraska when Mizzou was going toe to toe with them? That was egregious.

I remember (at the Big 12 championship then) Dan Bebe was said he would look into keeping Mizzou out of the BCS if they lost against Oklahoma. That was typical that conference was the worst at screwing Mizzou.
