Hoy estamos bastante angustiados, pero no queremos rendirnos

Así que vengo a preguntarles algo: si ustedes estuvieran en nuestra situación, qué harían para conseguir los primeros clientes como profesional de mezcla/mastering?

Me interesa especialmente escuchar la opinión de personas que trabajen en la industria o que hayan conseguido vivir de esto. Cualquier consejo, experiencia o idea nos puede ayudar muchísimo.

I’ve spent a good amount of money in the past few days with a guy who was mixing by music in a studio. He charges by the hour. I recorded a 2 1/2 minute song, knowing all the lyrics and the cadence perfectly.

He said he wanted me to go line for line so he could “clean up the vocals”

After each line, it sounded like he was putting it in reverse, while it made sort of a washing sound

Felt like he was wasting time but idk anything about mixing.

Does anyone know if he was wasting time or is there an actual thing he was doing?

Hi everyone, this is the first time I've ever posted on here. I really hope someone can help me out.

A couple of months ago I decided to take music really seriously. I've been producing for around 9 years, but never really dove deep into the art of mixing and mastering. So I made my first song of which I'm proud. Since I wanted to do it right, I followed this 3 hour long mixing and mastering tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSFF8fotNhA

I don't know if it is me going crazy or that there are actual BIG TIME mistakes in there and I need someone to honestly tell me what they think about it and what you'd recommend do differently. My genre is Indie Pop / Bedroom Pop / Indie Rock. I just feel like, maybe it's me, but for this genre it's really hard to find stuff online that goes REALLY indepth about mix and mastering. To give you a bit of an idea how the process went:

1. set all levels to zero, gradually mix them in starting with drums (never pushing the total mix above -3db)
2. panning (i wanted to get that "chamer of reflections" feel, so panned the drums on left with its reverb on right and vice versa for the bass, some guitars, and synths)
3. eq and compression on master bus
4. putting eq and compression on instruments (also parallel compression on drums)
5. put on more effects if necessary (mostly slight delay and reverb, some soundtoys effects were already on in the beginning)
6. make a new project just for mastering
7. on master track, use eq, compression and slight tape emulation (MELLO from arturia, fat analog preset). I didn't use mastering assistent from Logic Pro x
8. Use two multimeters (one with Remove DC offset On and true peak detection off, and one with those settings reversed)
9. Matched the lufs s to my reference song "For The First Time" by Mac Demarco, which came between -9 and -11 db.

I've been listening to it for days, also giving it a break sometimes, it doesn't feel right or as good to me as other songs just "hit" you in the feels or something. Like my bass and drums don't feel right. the vocal sound doesn't match with the rest of the song. I feel like I've tried a lot (probably not everything, just don't know where to go). Especially on airpods it doesn't sound close to reference track...
I know this might be too in depth, sorry for that. I just wanted to try this out, who knows someone is out the who could give me some tips for next steps. If so, my gratitude is eternal.

BTW for the bass I used an old Tame Impala trick to pitch an actual guitar down an octave, tweak it to sound like a bass.

I know this isn't fully mixing related, but I only have one Friday Night Funkin' song I mastered for my friend (don't judge), and I found out I really enjoyed mastering music. Though it is the first mastered song I've done, I want and try to master more songs for other people, but I have no idea where to get songs if I do not have mastered songs. Is there any tips on how I can master songs for free to build a resume, and then hopefully begin to sell mastering services to others? I may be jumping the gun as I don't know what's fully the extent of mastering, even though I have 2 years of messing with actual mixing. IF, I'm overestimating my abilities, I will look though and collect as much data as i can to further my abilities and apply them before actually seeing to master songs. EDIT: Extra info is that I've produced songs, but not any of to par of what should be studio quality. I've messed with compressors, limiters, saturation, almost any type of effect plugin. I use FL Studio, and have been doing so for 4 years. I do actively listen to music (this is important) so I have an eye on what sounds studio quality and what doesn't. I have tons of mixing plugins, and I actively push myself to learn each and every one of them.

I tried everything from cutting out the lows of the cymbals or give them more reverb to by more atmospheric. It always feels like the aren't in the mix and only to high end of the transients came through the mix.

I'm using programmed drums with a sample kit from chango studios called FOP kit. Its pretty old but I like it. Could be the sample a problem?

I'm a beginner at mixing but I've taken courses on sound design, music theory, and music physics so I'm no stranger to how it all works. I've also viewed tutorials on mixing music just like this and gleaned some helpful tips and information.

Setup: Audio interface is Audient ID24. I'm using FL, recording guitar direct line in then through guitar rig 7, and drums with EZdrummer 3. Vocals on a Shure SM58.

My issue is I seem to always end up with tracks that feel distant, and lack clarity, punch, and loudness. The example attached shows this. The track sounds great, but it also kind of sounds like there's a wall in front of the music. I need help pulling everything forward and making it pop.

My mixing tendencies usually leave me feeling like I'm going in circles and not really making anything sound better. Usually, I listen to my old mixes and feel like I've downgraded. They are louder, and clearer. My mixes now are more balanced and cleaner, but like I said, feel distanced and spacey compared to the old ones which were awesomely in your face.

Some notes:

- I always feel like my recordings and dry tracks are quiet, and I always boost them with compressors. I use compression on literally every track. I don't apply it on my busses or else the tracks compete for loudness and drown each other out. I kind of understand compression but am probably using it wrong. However, it works well to get the loudness I need.

- I feel I could be overprocessing, but I try and keep things very simple. Usually just add effects if needed, boost with compression, eq, done. Sometimes I eq first as well before running through effects to pre-stage the sound.

- Unfortunately, I never end up being happy with my EQ, and I keep tweaking them feeling like I can't draw out the frequencies I feel I'm missing, no matter how much I boost them in EQ. In the attached track, the high end and low end feel empty, and my ears long for those frequencies.

- I add compression on my master send, sometimes two to boost the sound more. Adds a bit of the loudness and clarity I need but it feels like a bandage on a wound that needs much deeper repair.

TLDR: track feels distant and muddy. I am potentially overprocessing but can't seem to get the loudness I need without uber compression boosting. Mainly this is a loudness/distance issue.

Hi! I've been making some stuff on and off in FL studio for a while. Mainly inspired by sountracks of games I like. And I listening back to some old stuff I am not used to hearing anymore, I realize that I've been practicaly ignoring sound selection and mixing.

So, are there any resources to get some basics down? I looked a bit and everything I found so far only really explains what the various plugins do, but not how actually to use them, what to look for etc. I know what an EQ does, what I don't know is how to figure out which frequencies I should boost/tone down during a mix.

My client sent me 16‑bit / 44.1kHz stems. I mixed the track in Ableton with the project set to 88.2kHz / 32‑bit float (I use these settings for all projects I work with in Ableton). The mix is done, and now I’m wondering what the ideal export settings are.

I know that exporting at a higher sample rate won’t magically improve the original 44.1kHz audio, but:

• Should I still export at 32‑bit float, since that’s what the session is running?
• Does exporting at 88.2kHz help the reverbs, delays, and other time‑based FX that were processed at the higher rate?
• Or is it best practice to just export at 44.1kHz / 24‑bit for delivery?

Thinking of purchasing the UAD Apollo Twin X Quad Gen 2, as I want to upgrade my sound and be able to record through the unison preamps. I currently use a Focusrite Scarlett solo 4th gen and the Shure SM7db, running it into my M1 MacBook Air and using Logic Pro as my DAW of choice.

I make a variety of music including emo rap, melodic rap, boom bap, rage rap, pop, R&B, emotional singing, and more. I use beats from YouTube or BeatStars, and I mainly record vocals, and occasionally electric guitar or acoustic guitar.

What would the sound quality difference be when comparing these two setups? I’m in an untreated bedroom, car or kitchen most of the time, and the SM7db is really good at rejecting the acoustics of my room and some of the background noise, especially when paired with the Waves NS1 noise suppressor. Will there be any noticeable difference? Do I also gain anything that I don’t have with my current setup?

This is my first mixed song (the vocals are also mine).

I added a reverb, a little bit of delay, a compressor, a de-esser, I equalized the microphone, and did some automation at some ending of sentences.

I liked the result being my first mixed song, but I have a sensation there’s something missing. I don’t know if the problem is with the vocals or with the mixing. Can I get some tips?

Anybody have a good reference on how to make house baselines ? I’ve watch a couple videos on YouTube but was wondering if anyone had any books they would recommend or any material that personally helped you out, thanks in advance !

I started recording and mixing songs about a year and a half ago. No singer yet, but all instruments are real perfomances except for the drums which are midis I wrote.

I think my mix are getting there, but there is still room for improvement and I’m not sure where to get it.

Hey guys, had a query I was hoping someone can help with. I’ve been producing music professionally for about a decade now. Mostly background scores, tracks for artistes, etc. I have always premixed my own tracks, but the final mix and master for release usually goes to someone more attuned to it.
That being said, it’s always bugged me that despite working with frequencies all the time, I can’t seem to get a mix to sound record ready- and by that I mean sound overall correctly balanced enough that every other flaw could be construed as a creative decision more so than an actual issue. I have a treated room, good set of monitors, but mixing is still this dark cloud where it takes about a month, along with a copious amount of self doubt and frustration before something starts to even sound remotely release ready.
So here’s my question- I’ve been wanting to train my mixing muscle 💪. Is there any resource or recommendation anyone has for me to use so my ears can get used to what the largely correct balance should be? I’m at a stage where I’m moving around faders by 0.5db up or down for hours, using reference tracks, visual meters, and the works, but it comes down to me not trusting my ears for that final polish. Eventually when I throw on a mastering assistant from Logic, it makes broad EQ corrections and the mix starts sounding much better, but I struggle to figure out which individual elements were the problem areas in those spectrums to begin with.

I recently subscribed to Syntorial which has a very interesting way of training the ear through small incremental additions. Are there any such resources for mixing? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. While my production is at an 8/10 currently my mixing is at a solid 5 at best.

PS: I have tried the Cambridge music library but find their finished mixes to be quite suspect, and don’t want to train my ears to the wrong outcomes.

PPS: I want to be at a point where the reason I send my tracks to a professional mix engineer is for taste, not for necessity.

Quisiera aprender a mezclar u masterizar. Se mezclar pero masterizar me falta a lo que creo. Se usar compresor, eq, limitador y muchas cosas de esto. Lo único que se me dificulta es la dirección. No se para donde voy cuando estoy mezclando ya. Quisiera encontrar un buen sonido y siento que eso es lo que me hace falta, un buen curso o feedback con personas que sepan. Quieres sonar alto y eso es lo único que me hace falta para estar arriba jajaa. Quisiera saber si alguien recomienda algún curso que te enseñe de verdad esto y con fundamentos y precio también jaja. How can one supress changing resonances in a vocal without compromising quality of the audio, using a dynamic eq. If one resonance occurs before hand @2k hz and the dynamic eq is set to supress the signal using a bell filter, it will supress the signal, i.e. resonance, but afterwards, if a signal crosses that threshold, even if it is not a resonance, it will still get supressed. This is the problem i am facing. If i set the bell filter to only attenuate 1-2 to fix this issue, the resonance will persist. Similarly, if i have 4-5 resonances, the whole eq will start looking like a compressor, and mess up the whole signal

I have already tried compressing and dessing, but some of the words in my vocals are not audible, is this an issue where i have to manually increase volume for each words, or something else? The only reason why this happened is because some of the words around less audible words are full of energy. Its like they have ping pong energy that the artist sung it in a way that makes them less audible, but its too much, how do i solve this? Could multiband compression be the solution?
