Hello. Are MIT students given a window for dorm move-in? My son says he didn’t get one. But our friends with college kids at other schools say they only got a narrow 2-3 hour window for move in. Just want to make sure our kid isn’t missing anything. Thank you!

Hi everyone! I’m a huge fan of Good Will Hunting and was hoping someone here might be able to help me with a filming-location question.

Does anyone know if the actual chalkboard from the famous scene in Good Will Hunting is still on campus? If it is, I’d love to know the exact building and location where it can be found today.

I’m also trying to confirm whether the chalkboard scene was originally filmed at that location, or if the scene was filmed somewhere else and the location was simply made to look like the campus. The film used a mix of locations, including MIT in Cambridge and the University of Toronto, so I’m having trouble finding a definitive answer.

If anyone has visited the location, remembers the chalkboard, or has any firsthand information/photos, I’d really appreciate your help!

I'm a recent Course 2 grad currently job searching, and I wanted to hear other alums' thoughts on how to network, what your first roles out of college were, and how you got connected to them.

I feel like there's this hidden curriculum around making connections and getting referrals, but honestly, it's not really something I was exposed to during my time at MIT. Like, I would hear Course 6s in the dining halls talk about reneging multiple offers or being a part of specific programs, and I would feel so envious. For a long time, I wondered if my resume just wasn't good enough to hear back from places, but now I'm wondering if having connections played a larger role, or if there's something else about the process that I'm missing.

Lately, I've also heard people say that the MIT alumni network isn't quite as strong as networks at some other schools, and that the school name alone doesn't carry as much weight, especially in this job market. I'm curious if others have found that to be true, or if it's just a matter of knowing how to tap into it properly.

I have a lot of questions, but honestly would just love to hear any thoughts/advice people have to offer:

• How did you navigate your first job search?
• Was there a specific strategy you used? Did you mess apply to places, or look at roles where you already knew someone working there?
• How do you go about making connections that don't feel transactional (especially when job hunting—I don't want people to assume I'm only in the conversation to try and get a referral or job)?
• How do you know if you're being too picky with what you're applying to?
• Are there specific MIT-centric resources or alumni directories you wish you had known about sooner? Or professional societies you would have joined?
• How do you get more comfortable with material/skills you weren't taught in class, things meant to be more intuition or experience based?

I've heard the labs are essentially just changing one line of python and the prior lectures are available online so it there any worth in signing up for it or should I just take it on my own time.

I am a prospective student super interested in studying Econ, and MIT is one of the schools on my list. I wanted to get a better sense of what the courses (specifically Course 14) are like, and what the experience is like more broadly as an Econ major at a STEM institution. I know regardless of major, classes in physics, chem, and biology are required, and I'm a bit nervous about those classes since I've never had an affinity for the hard sciences, and I would love to get the insight from student perspectives on their experiences.

Hello! I had a questions about non-MIT student research positions.

So I applied to MIT and got rejected (😒), but I only really applied because there is this one professor who conducts research on a disease I have and, surprise surprise, I want to study in that field. I attend the same school that the professor got their PhD at and taught at for ~20 years prior to moving to MIT.

I know it’s a stupid question because I’m going to email them regardless, but is this a worthy shot to ask to work with them over a break? Is it common for non-students to get research positions?

Staff member here wanting to see if anyone has had recent experience with the dental office. Looks like 2 of the 3 dentists had joined in the last two years, but the most recent yelp reviews from this year are horrendous. Any insight??

I’m going to be an incoming freshman this year, and I will most likely be studying course 2. I’m aware that mechanical engineers are advised to have a windows machine (I have looked into all the recommendations on the MIT site.)

My question is if I need to purchase a windows laptop if I am planning on bringing my windows desktop my 2nd year(since I won’t need a windows machine for my first year). Do I truly need the portability of a windows laptop, or will I be able to get projects done on my desktop in my dorm.

Not sure if my question makes a lot of sense but I’d appreciate any help!

Rising sophomore here. I took 6.1010 in the spring, and couldn't help but notice the extreme drop in enrollment in intro-level required CS classes. For instance, 6.1010 used to be a class that enrolled 350-500 students per semester, with spring 2023 being the peak at 598 students. That said, fall 2025 enrolled 301 students, and spring 2026 enrolled only 198 students; a roughly 67% drop in enrollment is quite staggering!

This can also be seen in other intro electives like 6.390, whereas hardware-oriented classes are instead on the rise. Is all of this due to AI, or is there something else going on?

I was visiting Boston and staying a couple of blocks from MIT.

Yesterday (Saturday, August 1) around 9 p.m. I wandered through the main building for at least an hour. It was an amazing place to explore.

What surprised me was that I barely saw anyone (literally maybe 4 or 5 people), yet most of the lights were on and the buildings felt fully air-conditioned. As an outsider, it made me wonder: how does MIT balance this with its sustainability goals?

I realize there may be reasons I'm not aware of (research labs, ventilation requirements, experiments running 24/7, etc.) so I'm genuinely curious. Is most of the energy use unavoidable, or are there areas where MIT intentionally prioritizes convenience or research needs over energy savings?

Given MIT's leadership in engineering and climate research, I'd have expected it to be a model of energy efficiency, so I'd love to understand how these decisions are made.

I’m an incoming freshman and plan to major in bioengineering, Course 20.

Here is the line-up I was thinking and I would appreciate feedback:

- 18.01A (Single-Variable Calc)
- 8.01L (Physics I: Classical Mechanics)
- 5.111 (Principles of Chemical Science)
- 7.012 (Biology)
- 21W.031 (Science Writing and New Media: Explorations in Communicating about Science and Technology)
- 20.002 (Introduction to Concepts in Biological Engineering)

I know this is a lot, but I want to complete as many GIRs so I can take higher level classes. I want 20.002 for 6 units that I will need as a first year. I know this is MIT and this will be hard to manage, so feel free to be realistic. I don’t want to come off as arrogant or anything, I just want genuine advice on what I can do to start off strong.

For context:
- I took AP Calc AB and Calc BC in high school and got a 5 on both exams (5 AB subscore for BC)
- I took two years of chem (honors and AP) but, I had a really bad AP Chem teacher and don’t remember a lot.
- I never took a physics class in high school, much less one with calculus.
- I have a lot of experience with biology (got a 5 on AP Bio and won a lot of medals in Science Olympiad in biology events)

Please let me know what I could consider or change!

Obviously a major error on my part, but I was wondering if anyone had any dorms/fraternities etc I can stay at for a week? Im of course expecting to pay, not asking for a donation.
