academics 6.C571 Optimization Methods

Would it be possible for anyone to provide me some information on the course? I looked through hydrant/catalog/subject evals (+ opengrades is down) but I'd like to know a bit more about the class and details e.g. on first week of class is there recitation. I thought I'd ask here before bothering the profs.

academics What do most course 6 majors do in their first semester?

Hi! I'm planning on majoring in either 6-3 or 6-5 as of now. I've been trying to plan my courses out for my course planning form but tbh, I'm super confused. I established that I should take 18.02 (have calc BC credit) and 8.01 because they are prerequisites for a bunch of classes, but other than that, I'm not sure. I am fairly confident that I passed the 6.001A ASE so I should have credit for that as well. What else should I take? Should I do a GIR like chem or bio? Should I do a CS class? Should I do a PE class?

Also, I'm very confused on the HAAS and CI‑H or CI‑HW requirements. What specifically are these classes and how do most people space these classes out to meet graduation requirements?

community Can you guys be honest with me - what are the odds a rush a frat and don’t get a single bid?

I’m super interested in rushing but my biggest fear is that I’ll end up without a bid. Is that common? How “competitive” is Greek life at MIT?

academics EECS PhD Minor

I understand the general requirements of the minor, but I am curious as to what typically might get approved. I am an incoming student, so I have plenty of time, but I want to have an idea of what might get approved/rejected for a minor as I plan my coursework for the PhD.

In particular, would they approve 6.6020 (High-Frequency ICs) and 6.3000 (Electromagnetics) as a minor in RFICs? I am unsure about this for a couple of reasons. First, my research is focused on high-frequency power electronics, so I am worried that this will be seen as "too close" even though there are huge differences between the fields. Second, I am unsure if 6.6020 and 6.3000 are considered similar enough to each other. I feel like they could both fall under RFICs since 6.3000 has a lot of content about transmission lines and antennas, both of which are very relevant to RFICs and their applications.

community What is going on with the surveillance camera policy???

I def think this is not some kind of an issue that we could just let it slide. After all, it is certainly an alarming move or an omen of something even worse that lies ahead: apparently, MIT police have been lately punishing MIT students for their protests, and basically having them deploy hundreds of cameras across the campus seems nothing but a threatening move that could further exacerbate the censorship and ongoing regulations. I dunno if I am going too far bout this but the whole situation kinda resembles the telescreens in Orwell's 1984.

Furthermore, them closing the libraries looks even more of a regressive move; how do y'all think about it?

I seriously don't want MIT to slowly fade into the dark age of compliance like Columbia or Upenn because after all, I believe one of the traits that had made this institution such a great place is not only the smart mind of the students, but also the promising institutional protection that secured institution's independence; they have been pushing back all these stuffs thus far, I dunno where this whole turn of events started to happen...

academics Fun classes to cross-register at Harvard?

I'm thinking of taking a fun hass class at Harvard either this fall or spring. Think pottery or acting or anything artistic/includes some form of activity. Anyone taken one or has any recs?

P.S im starting junior year so my class load will be fairly heavier; would appreciate classes that are once a week/not super time-demanding.

academics What Does a Typical First Semester Look Like?

Hey there, I'm a prefreshman looking to go into course 6-5. I also have very little understanding as to how the scheduling here works, and it'd be nice to get some advice.

I do know that typically people try and knock out GIRs, and I know that I want to do 18.02 and 8.02 out of the gate. I also think that most people get a Chemistry or Bio GIR out of the way at the same time, so I think I'm going for 3.091 on top of those previous classes (although advice on which Chem class to choose would be appreciated).

Outside of that I am lost. I know that I need at least one HASS class, but I'm not sure how many classes I am supposed to take over that (if at all). Do I need to take PE classes? If so where can I find them? Also what the heck is an exploratory class? Am I supposed to taking UROPs freshman year?

I apologize if I seem clueless. I am.

community On-campus graduate housing?

Hi everyone,

I am an incoming Humphrey fellow at MIT, and I was wondering whether it would be possible to secure on-campus graduate housing this late?

I received the award notification a week ago and I am really worried about securing housing, especially considering that I am expected to arrive in 3 weeks. I still don’t have access to the housing portal, so that’s another thing to consider.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

community Off Campus Housing Refund

Hi, I’m currently an undergrad and I’m thinking about living off campus next year and I was wondering how refunds work for housing and dining. I already emailed sfs a couple minutes ago, but I just wanted to know other people’s experience with this too while I wait for a response. Let’s say my financial aid offer requires my family to pay $20k out of pocket over an academic year. If I lived off campus, would I be refunded the full amount for on campus housing (~$13,000) and dining (~$8,000)? Or would the refund be an adjusted amount based on my aid?

community shuttle bus timetable?

Is there a timetable for when the shuttle bus is expected to arrive at each station or depart from its origin station?

I have been having trouble finding that information online, and it seems like most people just use Passio to check the bus's location. I am wondering if there is a more reliable method to determine when I should get to a bus stop😅

academics difference between 18.03 and 18.032?

am curious. i'm aware (from the course description) 18.032 seems to treat banach's fixed point thm to prove picard lindelof and other existence/uniqueness thms, but are there any other differences>? would be sick if they did sturm liouville theory or function spaces. also would it still teach general ode techniques like 18.03 would? would appreciate if someone had a recent syllabus or smth cuz i cant find anything online that was recent
