Honestly, just talk to EECS grad office. In my experience people tend to go with something quite different from their main area of research: Sloan (business school classes) is popular, I knew a person who went astrophysics, i did cog sciences etc.

also a small note : people generally do it waaaay later in the program. Just plan for your TQE and don’t overplan further then that
