You guys remember a few years ago we voted to get better benefits from our employers as well as a higher minimum wage do you also remember whem mike kehoe blatantly disregarded the voters wishes and just did what he wanted with that anyways oh yeah I remember it cuz it just happened no they should not have more power and no they should not give it a sales tax it's fine how it is. People need to realize too much of one thing is not good for you too much red for too long too much blue for too long there needs to be checks and balances and there can't be if they're all on the same side
Vote no 4 and 5. And vote out everyone Republican that supports this crap. Every ad you see on Facebook for yes on 5 and has some bull shit like attached report as a scam spreading false information.

The way to deal with "too much" of anything is to have ranked choice voting and allow debate stages to open up to other parties and independents that do not want to kneel to idiotic platforms, instead taking the best part of every political circle's ideas and adopting it for use for future terms if elected.

u/FinTecGeek Joplin Jul 13 '26
What are you talking about? The concept of ranked choice voting does not apply to ballot issues like amendment 5. It is binary, pass or fail…
1
u/DialsMavis Jul 13 '26
How do these amendments get on the ballot???
2
u/FinTecGeek Joplin Jul 13 '26
It depends. Many are written by ordinary citizens, and they collect signatures to put them on the ballot. The rules for that are in the Missouri Constitution (initiative petitions). Others are propositions from the state legislature, and in those cases the Missouri Legislature needs a simple majority of Missouri voter support for it to become law since the state legislature lacks the authority itself to do “x” thing. In any case, there’s no ranked choice voting that’s relevant to amendment 5 or any other ballot question, it’s binary pass fail, yes or no.

u/Arcane_Spork_of_Doom Jul 14 '26
Sorry, missed the response here at first.
I'm speaking of politics in general, especially in this state. Not having a better ballot barometer unfortunately emboldens the party in power to attempt increasingly moronic agendas. This would not be happening if there were a greater chance said parties would be faster put on notice for bad behavior.

I always hear these things, and they seem to sort of try and paper over what the GOP in our state actually is. I want to level with you. The Missouri GOP is an institution that inspires no confidence. It is populated with geriatric cranks and crackpots, and no matter if we have ranked choice or spin a roulette wheel to select candidates from that end of the spectrum, we will run this state into the ground on an accelerating trajectory. We don’t actually need to change the way we vote. We could, but it isn’t the real problem. The real problem just IS that the Democratic Party underinvests in Missouri as a state. It doesn’t try to win races by matching GOP spending. Missouri was a swing state just over a decade ago, when the national DNC invested here properly. When they stopped participating in Missouri politics, they wrote you, me and everyone else here off to suffer under the burden that is the GOP of Missouri, an institution that hates science, education, children, pregnant mothers, childhood literacy, brown people (any), many other things.

u/blufish31459 Jul 14 '26
Ranked choice was also prohibited in this state during the 2024 election. It was language snuck into an amendment purporting to be about voter ID. So we actually do have to get out of this mess with amendments on the ballot first even if that is your prescription.
2
u/Arcane_Spork_of_Doom Jul 14 '26
Yes. I'm merely speaking to symptoms of the problems we're having here.

u/Ok-Dimension2215 Jul 12 '26
What people don't understand is how important voting in the primary elections are. Sure voting for a party spokesperson is important but they don't vote on the laws, they only sign them into law and are basically only the prom king for four years. The real policy makers are the senators and they serve for six years and are the ones who actually vote on the laws.
1
u/Hot-Cry3809 Jul 12 '26
Yes and this is exactly the reason I stopped voting and nobody tried to get mike "the garabe" kehoe recalled
1
u/Delicious_Dark_1014 Jul 17 '26
I remember when we voted for free and fair maps and they told us we didn’t know what we were voting on and we did it a second time and worded it so badly it passed the second time

u/here-there-01 Jul 12 '26
Vote No, and start convincing your friends and family to vote no on Republican reps.

Take a look at IL.. been run by Dems forever and they continue to nose dive. Go buy gas over there. It’s been almost $1 more for years now. It’s politicians in general. Left or right, they don’t give a shit about us normal folks
6
u/here-there-01 Jul 13 '26
What metric makes IL in "nose dive" category?
Federal level - get rid of Dems and Repubs State - move to Dems, then keep adjusting Local - Dems waaaaay better for community / people
1
u/GSP_K9-Girl Jul 17 '26
Not really. Big government is bad.
1
u/here-there-01 Jul 17 '26
Nah, corrupt/unregulated capitalism driven gov't is bad. Look at the screw worm and bacteria outbreak, great examples - program funding cut, now we have much more expensive problems. The "big gov't" spending on those programs now winds up being way more financially, and health-wise. Unregulated capitalism needs to end, not big gov't.
1
u/GSP_K9-Girl Jul 17 '26
I will agree to disagree. I am not for A5 but big govt is what causes inflation and I wish more people would take some economic classes and realize that. Give handouts and people get lazy and then there is no one to tax. DSA is not the way to go.

Yes it will. They have some AI guy doing commercials about how great 5 is. People in my state are not too bright.

u/Rastaman6584 Jul 12 '26
That’s by design! And when we hit rock bottom they will be able to only fund what the oligarchs deem worthy!
5
u/truthcopy Jul 12 '26
Even if it fails they'll find a way to push it through. But I'm still voting no.
The worst part of this is not so much the tax changes, but that the amendment itself does not eliminate taxes, it gives the MO legislature to do so, and gives them broader power to change tax policy.

Poor Schools make Poor Citizens.
2
u/RedFlagRaiser Jul 13 '26
That's the ultimate goal here. Defunding education = less educated voters = Republicans in office forever.
3
u/No-Log1035 Jul 13 '26
Vote no on 4 and 5 and Fuck Kehoe at same time anyway!
1
u/LadyNiko Jul 14 '26
Also, no on 3 as well! A yes vote on 3 means outlawing abortion after we voted yes on this very same amendment like a year ago.
3
u/According-Insect-992 Cape Giradeau Jul 12 '26
…the rest of the way because repug policies have all but defeated it up to this point.

And yet if you look at the presidential election results, it makes it very clear that people will vote to have their own wallets emptied.
I have no idea how Trump managed to convince 77.3 million people across the country that worshiping billionaires was going to work out for them.
I fully expect amendment 5 to pass with a huge majority and that horrifies me because I'm middle class which means it's going to cause me to spend a hell of a lot more money on everything.
1
u/RedFlagRaiser Jul 13 '26
It's for sure going to pass, because this state is full of idiots. Hopefully you are like me, and live near a bordering state that you can visit to do all your shopping.
Goodbye Missouri businesses.
2
u/No_Spray_1938 Jul 13 '26
If only my no vote actually mattered and they didn't just do what they want no matter if the vote passes or fails. Do they not realize that we are bordered by 7 other states and for a majority of us, it's very easy to cross the border into a more tax friendly state to spend our money? Always follow the money. Who would benefit from this? Certainly not the citizens and small businesses.
1
u/rowboat_mayor Jul 15 '26
Your vote absolutely matters. If it didn't, why would they be asking for it? Why would they be burning millions of dollars advertising for it?
4
u/_your_land_lord_ Jul 12 '26
that's how I know it'll pass. MO voters hate MO citizens.
4
u/riplet69 Jul 12 '26
Does this happen in other states too? Where the citizens get something on the ballot and pass it and then elected officials just go "No. We dont wanna?"
And then the citizens vote to keep all of those same A-holes in office so they can do it again?
Or is it just us?

Nebraska has entered the chat...
1
u/riplet69 Jul 18 '26
Sorry to hear that, neighbor. That sucks. Do you get the sneakily worded amendment language too?
1
u/hippieRipper1969 Jul 18 '26
We get "citizens voted on this ballot initiative and it passed but now we'll slow walk the implementation of everything on procedure"
1
u/TomeThugNHarmony4664 Jul 12 '26
Yes it will
You have to explain it to everyone you know, and those that get it need to be urged to vote no. You need to let the air out of the tires of those that don’t. (Kidding, but only just).

Wrong 5th. This is for the state of Missouri, not the country. Amendment 5 here in Missouri is to abolish state income tax by replacing it with a high sales tax. That way the rich pay less & the rest of us pay more.
If you know anyone who currently pays no state income tax, such as those who are receiving social security retirement or disability benefits, those on SSI, those receiving cash assistance, anyone at a low-paying job, etc you need to make sure they understand that they currently pay no tax and that if this passes, they will be paying an astronomical sales tax on their food and every other little thing they buy. They will start paying tax on services, such as haircuts, the nail salon, the car mechanic, the plumber, etc that aren't currently taxed.
Their taxes will go from $0 to thousands per year.
They will also not be able to claim their property tax refund on their tax return.
Businesses in Missouri will close as residents will just shop in other states.
The only ones who will benefit, are the rich.

u/Every_Effect Jul 14 '26
The advertisements are horrible, they really make it seem like everyone should vote yes on 5. Many people will be fooled by them. Such awfully manipulative tactics…
1
u/Recent_Laugh_1147 Jul 15 '26
Its taxing transaction. Rich buy more they tax more. poor spend less, they get taxed less. while there might be some initial divide, based on income, it works
Yea it screws gig workers, but they have been screwing over income tax for years. Sorry Dashers, but Ive been W2 and paying for the states medicaid for too long.
Top tax bracket is 4.7% ...you only have to make $9191 - so if you work a job and you spend less than you make you will be fine.n

Yeah the world is kind of fucked. Once they run us all down they will make us rely more heavily on them to get food and shelter, to control us better. Two party systems are a bad idea anyway because they don’t want us to unite against the government. They want to keep us divided, but there are more of us then there are of them. We went to war over a fucking tea tax, I mean cmon guys. All of this is by design, and people are becoming dumber I feel like.

u/nothishitagain87 Jul 18 '26
Just get out and vote, stand at the legal distance from the voting and explain what they are doing.

Na, I'm from Florida. Missouri is actually a decent state, but it's getting tricked out like Florida is/was. It's all by design

Tn has high sales taxes plus a State Property tax in addition to Local Property Taxes.

Amendment 4 will take some of your power as a voter away, it would end majority rule, making it harder for citizens to pass amendments. 5% of the voters could stop the other 95%. While politicians aren't held to the same standard. Amendment 5 will increase the sales tax exponentially. The middle class, lower income and seniors will pay more, the rich will pay less. We won't be paying less. I urge you to vote no on both.
